Trying to organize a Nationals meetup for board members

Hi all,
I'd like to organize a meet-up for all the OES.org members who are going to the OES Nationals in Rochester, NY next month.

So far, I've reviewed the other thread started by Val where a few members roughed out their itinerary.
I've taken that and started to build a spreadsheet that shows the days of the event along the top and members down the left side.
I've placed Xs where that member has tentatively decided to attend.
(Ron, if you want me to send you the spreadsheet so you can post it, just let me know)

I've sent PMs to those members in that thread.

If anyone else is planning to go, please let me know what days you plan to attend.
You can either post here or PM me if you feel more comfortable.

I also looked for dogparks in the area. Seems there is only one (Greece Canal Park in Greece, NY (probably about 10-15 minutes away from the Fair & Expo Center)) but they have a $24 charge to register your dog. Wonder if they would waive that for the visiting dogs. I can check into that tomorrow. If there are other dog parks, I couldn't find them. There are more planned, but I don't think they exist yet.
Maybe some of our Rochester, NY area members can help out here a bit.

And I also looked for dog-friendly restaurants and found these:
Open Face (American food)
651 South Ave
Rochester, NY 14620
(585)-232-3050

Sinbad's (Mediterranean)
719 Park Ave.
Rochester, NY 14607
(585)-473-5655

And this link:

Again, help from our Rochester members could be extemely helpful here.

Comments & feedback are more than welcome.
Either in this thread or by PM.

Thanks guys.

Mark, I'm not sure if you're an OESCA member or not, but just in case it's not clear to any OES.org member - you do not have to be an OESCA member to attend any of the National events with exception to the annual meeting and the judges seminar. (Not sure about the Health seminar.)

Maybe some OES.org members will also consider joining OESCA as all you need to be is passionate about the breed.

Please let me know what you're planning, and I hope we can meet you. We'll be there the whole week.
Loki's Mom lives in the area she may be able to help you
with some dog friendly places.
She is pretty active up there in the doggy world! 8)

I am not a member as of yet.
And it's good to know that non members can attend the Nationals.
Thanks for that tip.

As far as the meet-up; what I had in mind was something informal and non-official.
It would be nice to have the OES.org members get together while we are all in one place. How often does that happen?
As a matter of fact, Val (sheepieshake) suggested this idea of a get together in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=30444
and mentioned it again later in the same thread.

It seemed like no one was planning anything (unless something is going on behind closed doors that I'm unaware of), so I thought I should step up to get the ball rolling.
I thought it would be cool for everyone to meet at the Expo Center for a little while, maybe hit a dog park, and then go out to dinner with the dogs.
Kinda like what Val & Judi did for Sheepiepalooza.

I'm all for anyone stepping up and helping out (especially the Rochester, NY area members). It's kinda hard doing this long distance, not really knowing the city.

Kathy,
Thanks for the tip.
I will PM her.

There are evening events scheduled, Weds, Thurs & Friday evening. Which of course you, and/or other OES.org members are welcome to attend. Weds & Thurs there is no cost, but Friday night you would need to pre-pay for a BBQ banquet dinner ticket which info is available on the OESCA site. If you have trouble locating anything in that section on the site please let me know. Sunday & Monday night would probably be your best bet for getting a larger group for dinner, but certainly I cannot speak for everyone here. Quite a few OES.org/OESCA members are also volunteering time to organize events.

Nothing is planned "behind closed doors". It's usually spontaneous, based on exhaustion levels from the day's earlier events....

Good to know.

Do you think I should back off on the planning of a get together? Seems like everyone's plate is full. I don't want to step on anyone's toes or get in the way.
Mark,

I don't think it is a matter of stepping on anyones toes. Nationals is great to attend as a spectator. But Deb (Verveup) summed it up fairly accurately when she mentioned exhaustion levels from the day's activities. So that is why no one is anxious to plan anything.

Perhaps you can just plan on attening one of the early days and I am sure you will be able to find a few people willing to go out to dinner for a little bit in the evening. I also have to squeeze in a dinner on either Monday night or Tuesday night as I have a side bet with all of those entered in agility. If things go as badly as expected I will go home without having to pay up. However, if there is a miracle on the course, then I promised I would buy dinner for any exhibitor who does worse than me. I will clarify the details for them later - some people are under the misconception that if they enter two dogs they are getting some sort of advantage. In any case I know I will not be buying dinner for everyone. Probably not for anyone, because if we don't qualify in any of our classes they cannot do worse than me. BUT I am sure we will go out to said dinner where you are welcome to attend with all the other people buying their own dinner.

BTW those entered in events always appreciate the moral support from the sidelines.

There is plenty of down time in the first evenings of the week but most of us are there to enter events. So right now that is where our focus is rather than the social. After Tuesday I would be more willing to engage in social events during the day but I also plan on attending the member's meeting and watching some of the conformation at the end of the week. I do not intend to take Harry to a dog park before Wednesday but would appreciate you checking into that.

Hmmmmm, sounds like I should enter Frank in agility even though he has never had any training so I can get a free dinner!! 8)

Mark, I hope you will plan on attending regardless. Always love meeting OES.org members, and it sounds like the king of OES.org and his lovely wife will be making an appearance as well! :clappurple:

People really don't understand the concept of "worse"

I am entered for three classes. If I don't qualify in any class then it is impossible for anyone to do "worse" than me.

Thanks for the tip, Judi.

I'll back off of that aspect.

If folks would let me know when they're going to be there, I'll add it to my spreadsheet.
I'll come out on the day that the majority of the OES.org members will be there.
Right now it looks like Thursday & Friday (but you guys may be too busy on Friday).

Any idea when "he" would be showing up?
Mark - we're real good at hanging out in our motel rooms and having social times there as well - kind of like a mini social/potluck of snacks and beverages.... 8)

Yep!!!!!!! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:
one thing you might think about having at the Nationals is a board with a signup list for each day and any specific meeting sight listed. We do that sort of thing at our conferences. It is very low key. People see the list while there and sign up if they are interested on meeting up that day. A time and meeting point are usually listed on on the sign up sheet.
It has been confirmed. I will be at the National for the conformation events. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

I was in a bit of a panic as at the show this week-end someone told me the dog must have an AKC number before they can be even entered. I called the AKC today and I am allowed to use a CKC number to enter (it is valid for 30 days) Yaay!

Gail,
That's a good idea. Of course it would have to be managed by someone who is going to be at the event every day. Or at least a small group of people that would be able to manage it for all the days.

I assume you will be there?
If yes, which days?

Is there any fenced dog parks in the area?
Any dog friendly restaurants?
My spreadsheet is looking pretty good.
If anyone wants a copy, PM me your e-mail addy and I'll send it to you.

Or if Ron could post it on the site? Not sure if that's possible.

I've narrowed my day down to either Thursday or Friday.
Which day would be better for a spectator?
Friday night is the banquet, so Thursday may be a better night if you plan on an evening get together.
I do hope we meet up. But I don't 'do' dog parks at all. Don't know what my dogs will pick up from others there nor the temperment of other dogs there. I cannot take that chance.
It's going to be a very long week, and nerves are there for most competitiors that week....
