Liver Disease

Hi there, I am actually posting for a dear friend of ours whose 10 yr old Yorkie is being treated for a possible liver disease. He needs to be on a low protein food---would anyone on the forum be familiar with a good choice for that? We fee Taste of the Wild but it is too high in protein for what this dog can handle. Thanks so much, Carrie

Often dogs with liver disease do best on a prescription diet from the vet.
Has your friends vet recommended something?
Oh Mim thank you for replying, they are still doing tests to figure out what exactly is wrong---it is so far leading to a liver shunt, however I guess this is usually found in dogs that are very young (around a year old)--Verdel is 10 so the team of vets are perplexed. His blood is also clotting which doesn't usually happen when there is a shunt. Sue (who is like a sister to me) is trying to gather her own research to present to the vet when they brainstorm on Monday. Thanks for your reply, Carrie---by the way loooooooooove TIGGY!!!!!!!! and her name!
Hi Carrie,

Sue might like to look at the site below if she hasnt already. Liver disease is so complicated and as you can see the liver is VERY important in ensuring correct nutrition. That's why often dogs need prescription diets to make sure they get all the necessary nutrients.

I hope your friend finds out what is wrong and is able to sort it for her pupper.

PS I love your paws up on the railing avatar pic. sooooo cute.
Thanks so much for the info--I will pass this on to her :D :D :D
My Schipperke-mix has a small liver and elevated ALT.
She was diagnosed about a year ago through testing
for something else. The numbers are way down but
still higher than they should be...

ALT was 1,231 last May
Supposed to be 5-107
Down to 185 a few months ago.

We feed Royal Canin Hepatic LS (a prescription diet- 14% minimum protein)

And she also gets Denosyl, a supplement.

Like Mim says, liver problems can be complicated... different problems
too... so Sue's vet needs to advise on the best approach.
Hoping the little one will be better soon. :hearts:
thanks for all the input ladies :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: I passed this info on--she will be talking to the vet tomorrow---I think they are scheduling an ultrasound this week for Verdel---thank you again for everything
