recurring yeast infection

Hi, my OES pup Loomis is 9 1/2 months old, he has had a yeast infection in his ears probably 1/2 the time I've had him.

I've taken him to the vet multiple times for this. I have ear cleaning solution I use once a week and after he gets wet, and I trim his ear hair per the vet's suggestion. They prescribe medicine and it goes away, but then it comes back again. :(

The food he is on is Candidae, originally it was chicken and rice, and now I have switched to lamb and rice.

Any suggestions?
I just feel so bad for him that we can't seem to keep these infections away for more than a couple weeks

Our Hudson had that problem for quite some time. Our vet suggested a double approach.

First, he put him on a full round of antibiotics, directed us to pull hair and wash ears each weekend. (In the past we used a topical to clean it out and our vet thought maybe it was still simmering deeper down.)

Then, he put Hudson on a specific food, and we were told to restrict him to that food alone...no treats and no people food. (He also had some digestive issues as well...and a wheat allergy, like his human mom, so he's on turkey and barley.)

He has been doing great since then. We even stopped with the weekly cleanings as he seemed to not need them anymore, but we still monitor closely.

A lot of my friends think Hudson's allergies are a big deal, but once we found a good food for him it was a piece of cake. No cookies, but we've since added raw veggies to his diet and he's doing well with those instead.

Good luck. Those constant ear problems were no fun.
I fought the ear infections with Violet for a long time...doing the cleaning ect. Finally the Vet had her on a stronger anti biotic and I stopped cleaning her ears and stopped having the hair pulled from her ears as well. Violet has not had problems with her ears since.
I use this ear cleaning product...

But... I only use it if the ears are real waxy or if there's a problem. Otherwise, I just wipe the ears out with a cotton ball. I don't want to disrupt the natural balance of the ears. The only dog's ears I need to really monitor closely are Darby's and Panda's ... both have allergies. Panda's do well except after plucking... I use Mometamax after every plucking to prevent infection in this dog's ears and also Bumble. Darby's can get gunky if they aren't cleaned every few weeks... more frequently during ragweed season which is now.

Plucking the ears, and shaving the hair directly under the ear opening can allow for better airflow. http://untilyoufindme.com/BottomEar-After.jpg Trim more of the hair farther below the ear opening if necessary. And each time a dog's ears get wet, they should be dried out with an ear product.

Diet also plays a huge part in yeast problems. Avoid peanut butter, carrots, wheat including Milk Bones, Pupperoni, etc... any sugary and starchy snacks. Take a look at the foods mentioned on this website... it helped us get some of our yeast issues under control- http://nzymes.com/pc/viewContent.asp?idpage=16

Ask too if repeated use of antibiotics can make the dog more prone to yeast problems. One of mine had been on antibiotics off and on for a bladder defect before it was diagnosed and she ended up with a horrid yeast problem. If the dog is not on a probiotic, I'd ask if it was ok to add one. We feed Eagle Pack Holistic Select to several in our pack. My vet has mentioned how good my dogs ears have always look. :D We have other issues but it's not with the ears!

Hoping you can get things under control.
Carrots thats interesting Jaci as I have had ongoing yeast ear problems with brie since a baby. She eats lots of carrots so maybe now will omitt that from her diet and see how that goes.
