Frankies grooming table arrived

Frankies new table arrived yesterday. I put him up there today, and the same old thing he wont let me touch him. I need some suggestions. I dont want to ruin him being good at the groomer. What can I do. He doesn't feel all that great, but he always acts this way. Is using a muzzle a terrible thing, or is he just playing his mom?

HELP

Thanks

all my dogs fought me whenever i tried to groom at home even with a setup like at groomers.
too watch them at groomers, you'd think they were angels.
:cow:
Is he actually biting or just squirmy? For right now, I'd just work on getting up there and comfortable-- don't even start the grooming. Get him up there, praise, treats and then let him down. Once he's got that down, work on just touching him when he's up there, running your hands all over him, lifting paws, touching his feet-- same thing, treats and praise. Once you're there, then just introducing a brush a little at a time using the same methods. It takes time to get them used to it, especially when they know how to play you. The groomer is a stranger but he knows his mom and what he can get away with. ;)
My guess is he's getting some vibe off you. :?

If he growled or nipped, and you backed down...it's a behavior he has learned works with you.
My guess is the groomer doesn't take that crap, and he respects that.

Firm and no nonsense, rewarding the good and not taking crap....that's the secret!

Start easy and be successful. Reward good behavior and stop while he's good.
Then keep working at it and get through it. If he tries something, call his bluff and press on.
Then end on a good note and call it quits with lots of praise or treats, whatever works.
Resume later and continue

He squirms makes a sound not a growl and wraps his mouth around my arm no biting down. I assuming he is warning me, but I don't want to take it to the point that he will bite me. My big problem is his chin and legs.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I'd start the first few time making the grooming table a place Mommy will give you good rubbies and treats only. Then start with rubbies, a little brushing, and treats. If he gets wiggly or mouths you, immediately get him off the table and ignore him for awhile. Eventually you may have to use a soft muzzle but do some rubbies and treats first, then the muzzle then more rubbies. Gradually intorduce the grooming back in. He must learn the table is for good behavior and grooming isn't that bad.........if you are good you get rubbies and treats too.
You are not alone in the struggle  My male is very difficult to groom. He'll jump right up on the table and then turns into Cujo! But I persist and do a little at a time. At this point he's okay with me using the clipper on his body but when I get to the feet, I do use a soft muzzle. The muzzle actually seems to calm him a bit. But beware, with the soft muzzles they can still nip you if they want to. And it cannot stay on longer than a few minutes at a time. I also don't use it when its hot as it does keep them from panting the way they would in heat.

The neck and around the mouth is difficult for me as well. Again, we do a little and stop. Makes for a strange looking haircut but looks good eventually
So Lisa, what did you eventually do, and how did it work out?
I think he just grew up.
He lays there and lets me comb him, and pluck his ears.
If he gets a little grumbly I don't back down and he goes back to laying there like a good boy.

Just keep putting him on the table, no brushing, lots on hugs and treats maybe a massage, let him learn the table is a good thing.
And remember calm brings calm. If you are flustered, stressed your dog will sense it. Try chewing gum, we release an enzyme in out saliva when stressed or nervoys that the dog can puck up on, gum masks this.
I find muzzles make things worse in most dogs, it stresses them even more. There are a few that when muzzled just stand there stiff! Uf i use a muzzle on a dog u use it fir a few minutes, then remive it and next time when they play up i show them the muzzle as uf to say if you dont pack it it you will have to wear this, most just give the sid that look!
If you feel you need to have a muzzle on your dog and then need to groom its face. Get a piece if crape bandage, double it over then loop it through and place on the nose. Your dig cant bite yiy, you will have controll of its head and you can groom.

If his ok with your groomer and not you why not ask them if you can go down and you give him a quick brush on their table and see how he reacts

Good luck x
