The only places I've gone with the dogs is to our cottage up north and dog shows. We always drove and for shows stayed in hotels.
Funny you should ask! Last weekend (Easter) we were invited to go with my sister and her husband to their company's camp. This "camp" turned out to be a 2000 sq.ft. (houseboat without rails) along the gulf of mexico. Which I might add came complete with a 2ft gangplank, alligators, and mosquitos. Along with Abby and I was my husband and his border collie, my mom and dad with their yorkie, my cousin with her sheltie and my sister with her poodle and all our kids. Count em' that's 5 dogs and 9 adults and 6 kids along with a few drop-ins. I was soooo paranoid that one of the dogs would get eaten by an alligator. The dogs could not be let off of their leash since the houseboat had no rail. It only had a 4 ft deck along 3 sides and a 6 ft deck in the front. It took a few tries to get Abby to walk up the gangplank. At night was the worse those 2:00am potty breaks down the gangplank to the grassy area along the water where the alligators patrol. Abby chases flashlights, so it was really difficult to keep her attention on the reason we were out there. Then, if by some chance a boat passed and shined their spot light.... well if any of you have a sheepie that chases flashlights, you know what I mean... Needless to say we did not relax at all.
Wow, that sounds pretty scary. How could you not be a nervous wreck with alligators around? And all those kids and dogs, hope everyone got along ok.
I can see why that would not make it to a dream vacation list. Hope your next outing is more enjoyable!
Two years ago we went to Virginia Beach and took Drez with us. It's a 9 hour drive for us. We have a mini-van so we had a bit more room, but we also had 2 teenage girls with us (daughter and friend), so there were a few extra bags! We had a car-top carrier filled to the gills, as well as being packed solid behind the back seat, under the back seat, in front of the back seat and in front of the middle seats. Drez loves her "bye-bye" trips, but this one was stretching even her limits!

We rented a house in Sandbridge Beach (just outside of VA Beach) so space was not a problem. Drez was an angel the whole week. Not one accident in the house. Took her down to walk on the beach in the morning and tried to get her to dip her feet in the water, but all she did was bark at the waves! She loves to swim in our pool, but I guess the motion of the water scared her. She loved walking around the neighborhood, smelling all those new smells!

All in all, it was a successful trip. This July we're going to Cape May with her (only a 3 hour drive this time!) and renting an apartment. Hopefully all goes just as well!

Hi,

I wrote previously about the time I took both Blue and Panda on a vacation to a remote Island. A few months previous to that I had taken Merlin as well.

The Island is located on the West Coast of British Columbia. In order to get there I had to take a 2 hour Ferry to Vancouver Island, disembark and drive to yet another Ferry. This one was much smaller and all vehicles were to drive straight on the ferry deck, unlike the previous one where there is two levels for vehicles. Lastly, I then drive across the second Island to be picked up by my good friend in her tiny boat to be taken to the Island she lives on. All together it's a 5 hour trip but well worth it! Feel like hop, skip and a jump as I travel to three different Islands to arrive at my final destination.

The bigger Ferry doesn't allow dogs on the deck with passengers and must stay in the vehicle deck for the 2 hour duration but you are allowed to walk around that deck to excercise your dog. Have to say BC Ferries are such dog friendly people!!! All staff members carry doggie treats and will even knock on your window asking if you need water for your dogs.

The Island my friend lives on, only has thirty residents and no natural predators but hundreds of deer roaming around and an enormous variety of other wildlife, otters, eagles and an amazing array of sea life.

For three weeks the dogs roamed free and both Merlin nor Panda showed interest in the deer. Blue would sniff a lot if they have walked the same path but it made us very welcome to the locals whom dislike dogs chasing "their deer". Everyday the dogs and I would go for long walks, they dove into the ocean and at night would be groomed at my feet my the fire. It's a vacation for all of us!

Tasker LOVES to travel. A couple times a year we drive from upstate NY to visit my family in SC. It's a 17 hour drive so we usually stop for one overnight. Tasker either sits right up front in the passenger seat or in the back looking out the back window (I have an SUV) . I LOVE the looks of passing cars when they see my big hairy boy sitting in the front seat.

We have had a bit of trouble finding hotel accomadations that allow pets but some chains are better than others and I've gotten so I know which ones to look for . It's pretty hard to sneak a sheepdog into a hotel!!!! I usually travel alone and having Tasker along relieves alot of the fear of being a single women on the road.

He's very funny when we stay in a hotel, he insists on sleeping in front of the door and gives a low growl everytime someone walks by outside. I usually pack a cooler of food so that we can stop for picnics rather than having to leave him in the car while I go inside somewhere to eat.

I do wish that hotels and motesl were more pet friendly. My dog is alot better behaved that alot of kids I know.
