Sounds like resource guarding. Often in puppy kindergarten they will teach you how to help with this, or you can consult a trainer for a one time meeting... The one thing I remember is not to scold or yell at the dog for it, it will only make it worse. I think your supposed to hand feed and then move towards a bowl in steps so the dogs knows its really YOUR food, that your LETTING him eat or something like that.... I'm not certain though... |

I haven't done any scolding. I just started having the kids feed him, so we'll see how that goes. I was just shocked to hear a puppy this young growl about food. He's not even a big chow hound. He doesn't even always finish his meals completely. So it's not like he's starving and afraid the kids are going to take his food. He so far has not growled about his toys, but I'm expecting that next. Must say I am worried. |
Sometimes its just one thing... My dog Hank guards me against petting my other dog. He jumps into my lap and swats the other dog in the head, then blocks my reach to him... This hasn't led to any other guarding though... I don't think it works that way... There are many forms of resource guarding, I'd call and get into a canine confidence class to socialize and learn manners. The teacher should be able to help with the food situation as well. Good luck! |
Is it a menacing growling or a gentle growl? My Wendel does a soft growl when Asterisk gets too close to his bowl. But I can still dip my hands into his food and push his nose away. Your puppy is young enough to start to curb this behavior before he becomes a huge dog. I would look into puppy classes. |

To me the growl sounds menacing. We were told we can't do a puppy class until we are done with all the puppy shots, and that's not for another month. In the meantime, I am having the kids do the feeding and toss treats into the bowl while the puppy is eating. We just started this today and it's something I read about in a clicker training book. I was just curious to know if anybody else has experienced this with such a young puppy, and if it means the dog will have aggression issues as an adult. It wouldn't concern me as much if the kids were bothering the puppy when this was going on. Then I feel the growl would be justified! But I monitor the kids very closely and they are not allowed to get in the puppy's face when he is sleeping or eating. The growling is happening when the kids are two or three feet away, just standing still. |
