Do not trim the hair from the eyes if you are going to leave them in full coat, give it time and it will grow out and you can push tie it up. I have trimmed Rogers around the eyes and now I am haveing to let it grow out. I use a spray hair wax in the hair arounf the eyes to keep it sort of proped up it works great well pretty good. And you are right they can not see through hair. Except for super dog and he can jump buildings in a single bound, wait whats that in the air. Got to go |
Lol. I think it's one of those things that once you do it once, you almost have to keep doing it too if you don't want the dog to look funny in the in between stage. I trimmed Clyde's and, granted, he can see better but it looks ridiculous growing back in! It might not be as noticiable on a dog with an all white face but he looks like I let a 3 year old and a pair of scissors go to town on him now. Luckily his bangs cover most of it up. Good thing he isn't very vain... |
I'm a fan of trimming, always have been. I tried tying up the hair on my first sheepie, but the only thing that did was give him another chore to do (pulling the barrette or elastic tie out). Drez is never in full coat any way (I cut her down about 3x a year), so it doesn't look out of place. Besides, I couldn't live without seeing those eyes!

absolutely!! Drezzie has incredible eyes !!! Abbey is 4 months and I haven't decided yet how to do her hairdo...so far she is growing out but I'm thinking "puppy cut"..I also have a shih tzu who has never seen long hair.I know some will say a sheepdog isn't a sheepdog unless its in full coat but when I researched I did it by personality and fit to our household always figuring I could have a sheepdog that was in haircut
so to trim or not to trim? Summer is coming...hmmmm...we have a pool...I'm thinkin she likes water because she splashes in it..drinks from the hose etc. another consideration. I want her to have fun..I want to totally enjoy my sheepie... |
I keep Remy trimmed, and lol it does look funny trying to grow it out. I love her eyes, and people like to see them too. If I didn't keep it off her face she does bump into walls and that really hurts.
Plus I wear my hair in a pony all the time, and it doesn't feel good to the scalp after awhile so I don't want her to go through that everyday. Once in awhile we sport pig tails with bows. |
What is the hair wax? Is it a dog or people product? I like the full coat right now of course because Sasha is still a puppy so its fluffy and soft, I'm going to try to let it grow out and tame on its own but I like the idea of the wax...anything to help her see.Hmmm could the fluff in her eyes be the reason we often get a blank look from her when trying to give hand signals in training? LOL. |
Buttersstotch's owner is the one that told me a bout the wax trick, here is what she said,
"The brand that I use is made by Tigi and it's called Headbanger spray wax. It's a pretty good human product and you can get it at almost any salon or beauty supply store that carries Tigi stuff. It comes in a funky bright orange aerosol can. I think it's about $12 give or take. It's pretty nice though because it has a nice smell and it's very light. Plus, it's not stiff and won't get flaky or anything." Now I couldn't find that type so I just bought whatever the drug store had. It was near the hairspray and some of them were called pomedore wax. It also came in a can. I imagine the headbanger wax is probably stiffer than the one I got but mine still works good enough. It doesn't make the hair stiff and smells great. |
I always wondred how they get around without seeing. Luna bumps into everything and she lovesit when you move her hair and she can see.
Last week we were on a walk and ran right into a bus shelter. I noticed a few minutes later that her mouth and beard was full of blood. When she hit ,she put one of her canine tooth right through her tongue. From that day on i've been cutting the hair so she can see and I must admit she has nice eyes and she seems to appreciate being able to see. |
Yeah, the wax and a quick shot with the blow dryer is great for the hair on top. Clyde hates barrettes and elastics and I don't want to cut his hair either I do actually trim the eye wisps though. It's amazing how fast that hair grows. |
I love being able to see their eyes, but I use clips instead of elastics, since I know elastics hurt my head. The clips don't stay in well, but that's ok. |

Funnything....I used to work for a company that sold tigi!!!! I happen to have a bright orange can of the headbanger wax. My son never used it so it's sitting in a drawer.YAY a use for it,finally. It'll be fun to see all the wonderfull do's you can create on a sheepie. |
The good thing is that you can try out all different "hair styles", because no matter what....it WILL grow back! |
The woman at the puppy class that I was going to told me that sheepdogs actually need to have the hair in the eyes for protection. We have always trimmed around the eyes with our sheepdogs but am wondering if anyone knows if this is true. She said that since sheepdogs have such sensitive eyes as it is that they need something to protect them. Can it be harmful?
I just can't have my little Bailey running into things all the time. |
lauralou: check out this thread for a little more info on this topic, particularly what Rogersdad says-- it makes a lot of sense.
http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=3062 I don't believe that's true. Perhaps in the days of herding where there was a lot of dust blowing around in the fields that would make sense but I've never heard anything on the sensitivity issue before. |
There is an old tale that says they need hair to protect their eyes. I have spoken to my eye doctor in the past, and the dog eye doctor, they say this is not the case for the eyes themselves, their eye is very similar to ours and normal light doesn't affect them any differently than any other dog. The next issue is sunburning of the skin, the skin won't sunburn under normal conditions, I have exposed Roger and my sheepdog of the past to sunny conditions with no ill effect. So if you are going to spend an hour at the beach under the sunniest condition you will have no problem. But if you spend 3 hours that's a different story just like it would be for you. Also if the skin has never been exposed to the sun it makes sense to go slow in the begining. |
Every time I "style" Sasha's hair to get it out of her eyes she shakes like she wants it back in her face... Anyone else notice this? |
