I awoke at 1:30 am to Frankie sneezing this morning, didn't think much of it. When we got up at 6:30 he sneezed about 5 times and I knew I was in trouble. Took him to daycare expectiing a call. When I picked him up tonight, they told me he had been coughing alot. There not too concerned since he has his bordetella shot. So I called the vet on the way home just to make sure. We are going to try some benadryl to see if that helps. This time last year when he was a baby, he got the same thing. So I'm hoping it's just allergies. Does anyone have any ideas? If I remember correctly there are a few different viruses that cause coughing and sneezing in dogs and not all of them have vaccines. Also the Bordetella vaccine is not 100% effective but if Frankie does have a Bordetella infection then the vaccine will help make it a milder case. If the same symptoms occurred this time last year then it does sound like it could be and allergy though. My dalmo gets allergies, usually just lots of sneezing and scratching but he has gotten bad enough where he does a kind of cross between a cough and a retch now and then. It sounds different to the barking cough of kennel cough though. Hope Frankie is better real soon. |

Our boxer is UTD on all her vacs and still required treatment for kennel cough. I had felt safe and protected against that baddie. The vet said it's like our flu vaccine. They use the most likely strains but there are so many, so still can become infected. It does have a distinct cough-like trying to clear a foreign object in throat. Shelby became sick after two days though and picked at her food, so that's totally a red flag. Hope Frankie feels better soon. Allergies are the devil too. Poor baby. |
The bordatella is the most useless of all the vaccines, even though day cares and boarding facilities require it. Like auntybren said, it just can't cover all the strains so your dog can still get sick. Could he have inhaled something? Owen sneezes like 10 times in a row if he smells something too hard and inhales dust or something. |
When I put on my perfume in the morning, Wendel will sneeze 5 times in a row. Then he likes to bury his head into my neck so his head smells like Beyond Paradise. |
His coughing got really bad over night, so we went to the vet this morning. He feels it's more than likely kennel cough. They had to help me at the vets get him out of the car. He his very lethargic. No fever though. He has to take some antibiotics and has to stay away from other dogs for a month. My little social butterfly will not like that at all. Lisa and Frankie |
My guess was kennel cough like everybody was sayinng BUT, I am very sursprised the day care was not a little more informed. Have you let them know so, they are aware that the other dogs that were in contact may get it too?? It is not a huge deal, mine actually used to get kennel cough more often when they were vaccinated! I have had plenty of foster's come in with it and we have been pretty lucky! I did have two standard poodles for a week that had it pretty bad and my wheatie got pretty sick Hope Frankie feels better soon! |
I called them when I got home from the vets office. They weren't to happy with me. I told them it's the only place that Frankie is around other dogs. He had to have gotten it from someone. Wouldn't he? Lisa and Frankie |
Yes he had to pick it up from somewhere and day care is the most likely place. Dogs with Kennel Cough are contagious for some time after they've stopped coughing, that's why you've got to stay away for a month but a lot of people dont know that. Or they get desperate and take their dogs back to day care early. Some dogs can even have subclinical Bordetella where they are infectious but not really showing any symptoms. Again I'm not sure but I think this is more likely in vaccinated dogs. Usually healthy dogs get over Kennel Cough pretty ok. Its generally considered to be more of an issue for dogs that are already unwell. The Bordetella virus is very hardy though that's why its such a nightmare for boarding kennels as it can linger around for ages and keep infecting new dogs. My vet told me that if a dog at the park coughs and the conditions are right ie moist, right temperature, then the virus stays viable for hours and hours and can infect other dogs that come past who never came in contact with the infected dog. Hope Frankie gets better soon. |
I agree. He had to pick it up from somewhere and day care around other dogs is a prime culprit. Although, he can also pick it up from being at the dog hospital. Kennel cough in itself is not serious. However, left untreated, it can go into phnemonia. So good thing you had him checked. Hope he feels better. I know that cough is terrible to listen to. |
Best wishes for frankie it sounds worse then what it is. Anti-biotics are given as a precaution to stop it turning into pneumonia and frankie is UTD with his vacs so should not be too bad for him. Just been through this with my lot, babette picked it up from a show and it went to the others, more distressing for me then the dogs, eating well, bouncy etc just sounded like I had a pack of walruses in the house Expecially trying to keep them quiet as when they werent Cough Cough Cough. You can also get some Cough Medicine, I used advised by the vet "Duro Tuss" Dry cough medicine, 4-5 mls 3 times a day, just takes the edge off the cough and helps settle the coughing fits. Sometimes they do vomitt like a froth with it too if in a choughing spasm. So the cough medicine helps there real well. Mine were also on Anti-biotics to stop it progressing into anything worse. Frankie will get over it, just sounds worse then what it is. He definately sounds like he DID pick it up at day care if that is his only avenue of lots of other dogs and of course they will deny it or other dogs being sick, they will maintain they dont have Kennel cough there or it will affect there business. And yes a good month before he mingles with other dogs, so contagious. |

They should be knowledgeable enough to know that that vaccine is pretty ineffective so there'd be no reason to make you feel like you did anything wrong. He even had the vaccine! That's annoying. That would make me not want to go back there. |
NO really....... When I called to tell them, the manager said Oh great just what we need. Maybe it was just her tone, but it ticked me off. He was at the vet Friday, but I still think he got it at daycare. Troy says the same thing, think about it, Frankie got papalomas then this.. Maybe daycare isn't all it's cracked up to be. You guys are right, I know it just sounds terrible, and he's not coughing that much tonight. I can't imagine that the antibiotics are helping already. Thanks for everyones thoughts and good wishes. As lisa had mentioned the antibiotics just keep it from turning into pneumonia. It basically just runs its course. It is really not that bad.. My aussie used to get it without even leaving the yard! He would get it when the wind blew the right direction (at the time I vaccinated every 6 mos) You did nothing wrong, I would tell the manager that she needs to better educate her staff! Like any daycare if a dog or kid is coughing they would send them home! Frankie will be all better before you know it!! |
As donners Mom said and so did I the anti-biotics dont treat the Kennel Cough they are just used as a precautionary measure to stop it turning into something worse. Kennel Cough is a Virus that has to run its course. Usually after the start of the sneezing and coughing it the coughing gets worse before subsiding. You did the right thing too advising the day care centre, cant believe how they reacted to you telling them that frankie has kennel cough, they should of been more sympathetic and gratefull you did tell them so they are forewarned to see if any other dogs at there facility are sneezing or showing any symptoms of it. Like Donners mom said if any showing signs like kids they should be sent home to try and stop it spreading to others. Still say they are not happy as IT WILL affect there business if on the premises so they will probably continue to deny it If frankie coughing gets worse try the cough medicine, helped me enormously with my hacking/coughing/snotty nosed/sneezing walruses. Also keep an eye on the disharge from the nose and even the eyes if looking like a snotty green/yellow discharge from the nose or a discharge from the eyes then back to the vets. Otherwise all should just run its course and frankie should be back to normal soon with a month off from other dogs. Pain in the butt but it does have to just run its course. I feel for you but imagine 3 hacking walruses it was no fun what so ever and they could not understand why no walkies to the park etc etc we have our freedom now WOO HOO. Funny Brie has not been vaccinated for it for years, the other two UTD with the vaccines for it and Brie had a milder KC then her two kids who are current with the Vacs. |
My vet refers to Kennel Cough as the cauldron of any number of viruses and other misc irritants. The vax covers only a few of the many strains a dog can come in contact with. Rest is important for Frankie and keeping him from excessive barking. Allow him to cough up any yuck, you don't want to over control it. On the other hand, excessive coughing prevents healing......so there's fine line. Cool water vaporizer may help, but this time of year there's probably plenty of humidity in the air unless you have an AC on constantly. The moist air is less irritating. Also encourage him to drink as it helps get the yucks up. I found my rescues recovered quickly. Rest, liquid and meds when prescribed (usually were) did just fine. A whole month! Poor guy and poor you! |
