Please read the following article I wrote 2 years ago about Sam and his sister, it should help you understand our family. May I introduce myself? My name is Sam Wise Gangee, better known as Sam - I am a male, two-year old, grey and white Old English Sheepdog. My sister is Margaret Thatcher, (she prefers to be called Maggie) she is a female, ten-year old, black and white Old English Sheepdog mix. We are your new neighbors; our parents Mike and Martha Witcher moved all of us from Michigan to Macomb in October. Maggie and I are both rescue dogs. About a year ago I was found wandering all alone in a farmer’s field in the state of Alabama. I was in terrible physical condition; I had not had a bath or food in so long that no one was really sure what dog breed I might be. The farmer who found me called the Old English Sheepdog Rescue Network of the Southwest and these wonderful people came and rescued me. They gave me a bath, a haircut and then sent me to the vet for all my physical needs. After much tender loving care by my foster mother I was put up for adoption. My Mom and Dad decided they needed a sheepdog boy to come and live at their house and they picked me! After leaving Alabama for a twelve hour trip in a whole lot of different cars driven by caring volunteers I arrived at my new home in Michigan to begin life with my new family. My sister Maggie is also a rescue dog. Mom and Dad heard about her through the Greater Chicago Old English Sheepdog Rescue Society. Maggie along with her two brothers were dropped off at an animal shelter in Springfield, IL. When Mom and Dad first saw Maggie, she was under weight, showed the signs of abuse and was a very scared little puppy. Maggie was adopted on the spot and has been the reigning queen of our house ever since. Maggie and I would like to ask everyone to please open your hearts and homes to a rescue animal. Of course we think you should adopt a Sheepdog, but we realize that other dogs and cats need homes too! We are very happy to have a good home and a loving family; wouldn’t you like to help another lonely, homeless animal? Thanks for listening – Sam & Maggie Witcher Note: We are now living in Utah - arrived in mid June. Maggie is no longer with us, she has gone over the Rainbow bridge to be with her big brother Bill. Bill was our 1st OES. Sam is still with us, he was rescued with the help of this board. We are hoping to adopt a little girl named Maggie who is living in Minnesota - I discovered her on the Petfinder pages and have submitted an adoption form. We are hoping to this little sweetie will come and live with us soon. Sorry this is so long, but I know all of you will understand. Thanks for listening, Sam's Mom, aka Martha |

I believe that Maggie's adoption is now pending and that she's scheduled to meet her new family on Friday. There are several other OESs looking for good homes though so don't be discouraged! I'm sure you'll find a great OES to bring into your home. |
Very happy to hear that Miss Maggie has found her forever home, although I am sad for us. We will keep looking for a little girl, who knows maybe we will even find one closer to our home in Utah. |
I assume you are in contact with Colorado rescue as they do have someone in Utah who keeps an eye out for sheepies in need. Also there is Staci....check out the rescue link on our home page......scroll down. For awhile there were some breeders in central Utah kicking out dogs regularly. Hope they have stopped as they flooded the rescue scene there. |

I'm on my way today to pick up a mix in Spanish Fork. SheepieBoss wrote: For awhile there were some breeders in central Utah kicking out dogs regularly. I am not aware of any responsible OES breeders in the state. |

Martha. It is great to see you on here. I lost you when you moved and not been able to contact you. I hope that Sam, once upon a time Duke, is still doing great. |
Woo Hoo - Great to hear from you Betsy! Sam is doing GREAT! He put on about 6 inches in height and 40 or so pounds after he came to live with us. Guess he decided he needed a growth spurt! Vets are always amazed at how large Sam is and how healthy. Sam is a wonderful boy, he is very very laid back and is velcro attached to me. Every where I go Sam goes. He learned to walk without pulling on the leash, knows all the commands for sitting, stay, etc. We have even taught him hand signals to sit and lay down so we don't always have to verbalize commands to him. Sam has a wonderful sense of humor, loves to eat popcorn and hog the couch on movie nights. Hope you are doing well and that all your fur kids are healthy and happy! Take care, Martha and the ever happy Sam! |
