barking at passers by

Cappi is deaf, he rarely barks, but this last week he has been barking at anyone that walks passed the window, he will jump off the sofa and charge at the window with this really deep bark, only a couple at each person. I have spent the last few days with the blinds closed but thats so depressing!

So, any advice please, its not a major issue, but i do worry about my neighbours having to hear him.

cafe curtins?
You are lucky its only a couple of barks. I have TWO that go nuts at anyone who dares to pass by our house.

I keep a spray bottle handy and they get a shot every time they go nuts. They go around wet all the time

That would be me. I hate nuisance barking. So what happens? I end up with a rescue dog who was evicted/surrendered for nuisance barking

The spray bottle does shut her up (with some dirty looks my way). But given that she still barks UNTIL I get her attention, I don't know that it's a cure so much as management. Barking tends to be so self-reinforcing for the dog that it's one of the hardest darn things to break. Better to put a good "quiet" command on the dog before they discover the joys of mindless barking. But past a certain threshold even that often won't work  8)

I was starting to wonder if my old girl was becoming a little senile because the last month or so she would often stand down stairs and bark for, as best I can tell, no reason (I'd run down and let her out, nope, etc) It's not nuisance barking. It's her "I need you to take care of something for me NOW" bark. Except I couldn't see that anything needed to be done so I was starting to wonder if maybe some doggie alzheimers drugs might be in order (that and about three times a week I'd come home and find she'd shut herself in the bathroom).

Just this past week or so I finally saw the little rescue itch in action: she sleeps outside my (upstairs) office door, just far enough towards the stairs that I can't see all of her, and she won't let Belle and Mad come up!!!! That's what Belle was barking about. When I got up to check on Belle, Dazz would slink away so I didn't catch her. She must have gotten a little cocky on her throne there and let her guard down. BUSTED!

Now when Belle barks she has me trained to yell: "DAZZLE! MOVE!!!!!!!!!" Then Belle trots into my office a few seconds later, big grin on her face. Problem solved. Stupid owner finally gets it. No geriatric brain booster meds needed. For Belle, at least. 8)

Though I have to think for the past month or so she probably wandered around the house muttering to the rest that I might be in need of some.

Back to your boy, charging can be a bored dog who has given himself a job. Or one lacking in confidence hoping that if he barks first, the "threat" will go away. Which, let's face it, it generally does anyway. So that just reinforces for him that it works.

Since this is a new behavior it might pay in the long run to live in the dark for now so it doesn't become ingrained. If it's boredom, hopefully he'll find a new hobby a few months from now and you can have your peaceful daylight back...
