I don't have any advice to give, but I do want to say I am so sorry. I know how you all had your heart set on your new baby. Lisa and Frankie |
I'm so sorry to hear that. I know you were really looking forward to Elvis coming home. You know what though? I guarantee that if you get this other boy, you'll love him just as much. It sucks so much when you've already felt like you've gotten to know this other boy as your own but you'll do the same for the new guy. I can tell you this with 100% certainty because I waited through several litters waiting for my guy to come to me. I wanted to show my dog so I trusted my breeder to recommend the best show prospect for me. The first litter, I went up every week and fell in love with one puppy that I watched grow every week. In the end, he didn't end up being the one for me. Then, the next puppy that was supposed to be mine ended up only having one testicle drop so I didn't end up getting to keep him either. In the last litter, I didn't even want to know so I didn't have to worry about any disappointments. The day I went to pick the puppy up was the day I found out who was coming home with me! I don't have a single regret about it and it's worked out great. If your breeder thinks that this last guy is still a good match for your family (as in his personality and your lifestyle), I'd go for it. On the other side of things, I'd want to make sure that Elvis's health problems were specific to him and not a trait of any of his littermates, too. The last thing you want is the heartache of losing a puppy that you've had living with you for awhile. Have the parents had genetic and health testing? What kind of health guarantee does the breeder offer? Does she show her dogs to make sure that her dogs are actually conforming to the UK standard? Those are all important questions to ask. I'm afraid I don't know a lot about reputable breeders in the UK but I know quite a few members on her may be able to share experiences and recommendations. Good luck in no matter what you choose to do! |
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Elvis. |
I'm so sorry to hear this about Elvis. It's better that this happened at the breeder's than after you'd taken him home. Still very difficult but it would be terrifying to witness such an episode. Maybe just nature's way of saying things were just not meant to be? I agree with everything Jill has said. She waited FOREVER for Owen. You will end up with the perfect puppy and be thrilled with him. Don't worry about already posting photos of Elvis 1. The rest of us would have done the very same thing. As long as the remaining male is sound and healthy I'd snap him right up. If not, it may take the patience that Jill had to wait for the right puppy. But it will happen. Sending you hugs |
I am so sorry.... |
I am so sorry to hear this. It's just awful. By "fits" do you mean seizures? And if so, what is up with sheepdogs & seizures lately? How many sheepies have we lost due to seizure related illnesses in the last year? |
I'm so sorry to hear about Elvis Do you know if the parents of the pups have had any health checks done ? I'm in the uk and there is a lot of people breeding pups with no health checks done on the parents I know of 2 pups that have died from seizures this year from a certain area of the UK and the the breeders are still mating the dogs that are producing these ill pups |
I am so very sorry for your loss of Elvis. He was a cutie. I agree with ButtersStotch (Jill) but I would add "talk to the vet". Ask the breeder to put you in touch with the vet and ask if the other pups are healthy and are there ANY additional concerns for them now that Elvis' problems are known. Hopefully the vet will be straight with you. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. :-...( |
I am so sorry for your loss. It's so sad. I agree with the other posters. See if you can talk to the vet, check out health testing/history. If things look okay by all means take the remaining pup. But use your judgment and listen to that little voice in the back of your head. If something doesn't seem right then you may want to look elsewhere. Fingers crossed for you that that's not the case. Again, I'm so sorry. |
Very sorry to hear about little Elvis. I hope that your family gets a healthy puppy soon. |
How crushing... you're son must be heart sick... I agree, speak with the vet about this other puppy. He can give you his opinion on the dog. I would think he'd be objective, his agenda isn't to sell you this puppy. |
Don't be surprised if the vet declines to give out any information without the breeder's permission since the breeder is their actual client. We've contacted vets who take their client's privacy very seriously as well as those who casually give out more information than they should. I hope you can get the answers you need to help you make the right decision. |

I hope you can get the answers you need to help you make the right decision. You know, Nita... I hadn't thought of that! And I work in Mental Health!! Then again, I guess I didn't think of veterinary in the same way as mental health. I wonder, could you have the breeder give you permission to speak to the vet? I would be shocked if they declined the offer. |
We recently ran into a vet in Illinois who refused to give out information on a client unless they called to give permission. We only needed to know if the client's previous animals were regularly vetted, not any specific information about an illness or injury. Kind of like HIPAA privacy laws for humans here in the US. Another vet here in Indiana was contacted to ask about a couple puppies we'd taken into rescue. I asked if they had a client who had a litter of OES recently. Not only did they tell me who the breeder was but also their address and phone number and how many pups were in the litter! It just depends on the person answering the phone, I suppose. |
Thanks everyone xxx The owner has given me the details for the vet who took care of the puppy Elvis1 (we will call the new one Elvis as my son has bought bowls with his name on and a blanket!!) Anyway I am phoning him Monday and making a final decision. The owner said the vet had said its more likely to be developmental rather than hereditary or infection etc.....The others talking about fits (seizures) and puppies is worrying though!! Once again Thank you all for your advice and kind words xxx |

My vet won't discuss any dog with someone other than the owner unless the dog's owner has given her specific permission to do so, I've told her many times that she's free to talk about whatever she may see in my dogs if it could help someone else, sort of a blanket waiver if you will. But she'll still contact me and ask specifically for permission simply because she's protecting herself and her clinic's reputation. So, yes, some vets take confidentialty very seriously. Kristine |
We are very sorry for your loss. I agree, speak with the vet about this other puppy. He can give you his opinion on the dog. If you want the other pup ask the breeder for a guarantee... Check for OFA and CERT documents. Beatrice breeder gave guarantee on hips and eyes... |
Hi everyone Thanks for all your help and kind thoughts UPDATE: I did speak to the vet and he feels that it was a developmental problem rather than genetic but no autopsy or anything was done.He said he checked the rest of the pups and they seemed happy and healthy. The pups are goingback to this vet for their first vaccination on Thurs 5th and he will do a full check on them. Then I am taking new Elvis back to him the following Thursday before I decide to bring him home with us. If I am not 100% confident we are looking elsewhere. Fingers crossed it will all be a happy ending. We are off to Italy near Venice for a week now so will speak when I come back xx Thanks again every one of you Trayza and Finley and hopefully soon Elvis xx |
Sorry for your terrible shock. Here's hoping it all works out with the other boy. |
I'm so sorry about that. I hope it all works out okay in the end. |
