Puppy feeding guide?

Hi all,

searched back 10 pages but can't find anything useful about this!

Recently got taken over by Asgard our new OES and I'm still trying to find the right amount of food to feed him daily!

We have 3 large cats who can eat when they want but I obviously can't do that here!

Feeding him Applaws puppy and Orijen large breed in the morning and Lukullus wet in the evening!

Hes 10 weeks and seems quite skinny....has a great appetite though but there seems to be a fine balance between starving and being sick because hes eaten too much!

Is there a general guide or is it just an adjust until its right process?

TIA,

What a great name for a puppy! Congratulations! The manufacturer should have a guide on the back of their food bags to let you know what they suggest you feed your dog. You tend to feed a puppy a little bit more than a grown dog, since they are growing and need the calories.

If you don't have the bag anymore, try finding a website for the food company, it should have it there.

How *obvious* 8O You suit your name :)

Cheers for that!
Our puppy (4 months) eats about 3 cups a day (1 1/2 in morning and night) mixed with some wet food. This is a little less than the food (Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy) recommends (3 1/4c - 4 1/2c I believe). We had him eating a bit more but he would get sick on days he also got a few too many treats, so we reduced him. See what the bag says, but so far I find going a tiny bit below works well, especially if you are training or treating a lot. We also make sure to not let him get too excited until an hour or two after he has eaten - that might help for you too (also good anti-bloat behavior).
Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new puppy!

Just one caution when looking at the recommendations on amounts from the dog food bag. A manufacturer's job is to sell as much food as possible, so the amounts listed, in my experience, are a tad on the high side. I've had two LARGE sheepdogs (both about 115 lbs full-grown) since puppyhood, and neither ate anywhere near the amount recommended on the bag. (Some bags recommended 5 1/4 - 6 cups per day 8O for Oscar's size, but the most he ever ate was 4 cups per day.)

A puppy does need a significant amount of calories to thrive. In order to avoid feeding our pups large amounts at once (which can lead to a horrible condition called "bloat" or "gastric torsion"), we fed smaller amounts, three times a day. Also, make sure you are using an actual measuring cup, and not a scoop, as four "scoops" may not equal four measuring cups.

Ahhhhhh, puppy breath. :D (But I don't miss the barracuda teeth....)
