do dogs get constipated?

Ok, this may sound really stupid. A few days ago BOTH dogs had horrible diarrhea. I mean liquid explosive stuff, yuck. I have no idea why. No change in food, treats, routine, etc. It went on for two days. So....I fasted them for 24 hours, then fed them hamburger and rice. First for dinner, then breakfast the next day. Kept going out with them to observe their "habits"...no poop from either of them. Next dinner, hamburger and rice with a little kibble mixed in. Took them out, no poop. So, as far as I can tell, they have not pooped at all for 2 days.I need to feed them breakfast today, and was going to feed them their normal kibble with some canned mixed in, their normal food but am worried they have not pooped in over 2 days. Otherwise they seem fine. Drinking normally, playing normally. I'm concerned I can't observe their poop. I know this sounds gross, but I am concerned. I didn't want to put them back on their normal food until I saw normal poops, but I think I will feed them their regular food this am. Am I crazy?

At the risk of sounding like TMI...
I have mild IBS, and having intense diarrhea, then several days of no BM's is common.
The digestive system is a big tube. The diarrhea empties out the contents faster, and higher up than from a normal BM. So then several days go by, waiting for new waste material to come down far enough to make the next BM. Does that make sense?

Add in the fact that you limit the oral intake when diarrhea is present, there is less waste being made for a day or 2.

The 1st BM's are normally a bit on the dryer side.

And some dogs (like humans) are constipated all the time. Our min pin who has medical and digestive issues (congenital disease) always is constipated - and he's almost 12 now. It is painful (bad pun) watching him strain to poo. :( He always needs to gain weight, so I feed him richer food sometimes on purpose to make his stools less hard. Stuff that would give a normal dog the runs!
Yep. I've had a couple sheepies with really sensitive tummies. It's explosive, then bland diet, then a waiting game for the next normal poop. The bland diet is digested with little waste products anyway, so it becomes a waiting game. What you're going through (or rather your pups are going through) sounds perfectly normal.

Keep watching. If there's signs of distress when they do resume pooping that may tell you that the messy bum was caused by ingesting something that's getting caught.

I'd do small meals over the course of the day, and you can always go half bland half regular for a day or so, just to keep things gentle during the transition.

Good luck.
After a bout of diarrea, and then boiled chicken and rice, I find my dogs also don't resume their usual "pooping" schedule for a day or so. But if it goes on longer than three, I would get them checked to be sure nothing is blocking.

Makes me think of a story from a few years ago and my then pup had a bout of major diarearra and then no poop...I get to work one morning and there was a message on the machine for all the office to hear from my husband in a nice big loud excited voice ..." Honey, we GOT POOP!"...
LOL, Ashley, I know the feeling. This morning both dogs had normal, nice and firm poops! If my neighbors could have seen me jumping up and down in delight at this I'm sure they would have thought I was crazy!
Congrats on the normal poop!

:D :clappurple: :D :clappurple:
I can completely identify with the poop stuff. We have daily conversations about Mady pooping (although she poops just fine 99% of the time). When she ate some sharp plastic, we were on the lookout and I think that our neighbours think we are a bit crazy for how closely we looked at that poop. When she finally pooped it out, I jumped up and down and clapped my hands. Neighbours haven't spoken to me since...
I completely understand. Frankie is prone to loose poops. I am known to go outside with a flash light at night to see what he did.

The neighbors must think I'm crazy. There not dog people.
canned pumpkin really works well when dogs are having poopy problems. I always put a little in Frankies food.
