So It Wasn't Bricks!!

So it wasn't bricks this time I spied for free on Craigs List, but crushed gravel. I need 17 yards of it - according to the Landscaper who redid the portion of my yard where the car sailed into my fence. The Landscaper was sent by the Insurance company to replace many of the shrubs and trees that were damaged. She also did a teeny portion of the gravel path as the tire marks were apparent when the vehicle drove into the yard.

The weeds are popping through the entire gravel pathway and although I pick them daily when out with the dogs - it's a never ending cycle. I thought of re-graveling the pathway...but OMG 17 yards and the aprox cost of 2 grand???? No way!!

I'll just check CL and just do portions of it myself......so that brings us to the story.

I mail the person offering the free gravel and make arrangements to borrow 22 blue plastic totes from the SPCA they have stored outside the shelter (they used to contain kitty litter) which a company donated.

Permission received, I go on my "mission". I shovel the mound of gravel into the totes. Can"t fill them up fully as I wouldn't be able to lift them..so I fill half way. I then lift into car and continue to fill them using a smaller container until they are full. I then place another on top. I can fit aprox 12 into my car. The weight I'm told is 600 pounds. This takes me 5 hrs!!! My arms ache and I now must UNLOAD the rocks from my car and head back to get the rest as I promised to take all. That night I can't move and I have to return the following day to get the rest. In total, I make three trips. I end up carrying 1800 pounds of rock in 2 days. I should have just had a yard delivered .... :? :? :? :? . Then thought only 16 more yards to go...ha ha!

On my last trip I notice that the area he removed the rocks are filled with a noxious weed it took me years to get under control at previous home...OH NO!!! That means I'm going to sift all the soil now from the rocks as I don't want to bring those weeds to this garden. Egads! More work!

So now the rocks are placed on tarp and it will take me the rest of the summer to sift/sort the gravel. Kaj is laughing at me as he said he would have bought me gravel.(He's been at work so I've done this alone) I think between my time, gas and labour...in this case for once he's right.

At least it wasn't bricks this time.

Without knowing the noxious weeds, even sifting may not eliminate the seeds. A seed can hide in a crevice. I hurt just reading your posts.
Can I have some of whatever you have to make you so energetic? I was feeling tired from folding a load of laundry...
Oh silly girl,
Kaj has to keep a better eye on you.
if the rocks are away from the animals, how about spraying the stone with weedbgone and letting them get rained on. several applications should do the trick and you can start using them from the top of pile. might just save sifting.
one other thing, it's bothering me that you were led to believe metal roofing is so much more than asphalt/fiberglass shingles. it is when installed by contractors and you don't need a special gutter for it, that's contractor malarchy. they also make snow and ice cleats too install to prevent slides. think you and kaj should price it at building supply store. as i recall from pictures of your fence damage, your roof is not steep. it's not difficult to install and if you got friends to help, it might surprise you.
;-)
Metal roof? We are looking at reroofing too. I'd love the metal roofs that look like shingles but they only come in darker colors. Not a great idea here. And yes, they are more expensive but also more wind resistant since they are screwed down not nailed.

The alternative are the sheets of metal with the ridges running vertically. They are quite popular here. While I like them, I'm not sure they are best for here.

Albuquerque was the first place I can remember seeing the metal ridge roofs - those big homes north of Tanoan. My first thought was the rain would be sooooo loud.
A couple of the lake homes we are looking at have the metal ridge roofs. My biggest concern is hail damage. That area gets a lot of hail.
Yeah, North Albuquerque Acres does have a lot of metal roofs, first place I saw all the various colors. I bet they are noisey in rain........but seriously how often does it rain, or hail here? Especially for me in the valley.

My concern is we still have evaporative cooling so twice a year that roof needs walking on. Fortunately it's not one of those super peaked roofs, just standard.

Wind is another concern, we aren't as bad as other areas in town......4 Hills for example, but our current roof and gazebo are missing shingles due to wind. Then again, a 20 year guarantee shingle here is a joke.....think 10-12.
Marianne, Your energy is awe inspiring. Taking care of such a big property and all your animals puts me to shame. I painted the back fence this year and our old deck and I feel very virtuous !
My excuse is that I'm getting older and I work full time but really that's not really the reason I don't do physical labour ( smile ) Just like to sit and eat a little too often and a little too much !
