I have a 10 month old OES Female. She goes to the groomer constantly! I brush her DAILY! Yet the mats seem to be NEVER ENDING!! I can seriously brush out one mat and about an hour later theres another one in the SAME spot!! Someone please tell me that when the puppy hair is all gone the mats at least slow down a little. Is there some miricle thing out there I can use to keep the mats from forming daily? HELP!! |

Puppy coats are the WORST! Sometimes it seems like they will just mat by looking at them. What kind of brushes are you using? This can oftentimes help you with mat control. Are you using pin brushes, slickers, double-sided combs, rakes, etc? With my dog, I had her shaved when she was 8 months old, the weather was really wet and I just couldn't keep up. Her hair grew back quickly and her coat had undergone a change so it was much easier to care for. She just turned two and now her coat is WONDERFUL. Her greys are staying mat free, but her whites are still pretty soft. Hang in there! It will get better!! |
Thank you so much! It is good to know the hair does get better with time. I have every brush, comb, anything you can think of!! lol The mats aren't hard to get out really, its just time consuming. I often take scissors and cut through them in order to make it less painful. I just hate that I am forever having to brush her. She is very good about it though but I know shes as sick of it as I am. Ha! I think I have stock in detanglers, brushes & combs now. I just don't want to shave her or cut her down because she is so darn adorable. |
It will get better. I think Asterisk has had three coat changes so far. I hope she goes through another one. Her brother Wendel has THE BEST COAT! I love it, it hardly seems to mat. His coat is far coarser and it curls too. Just be patient, and tackle mats as they come and get into the habit of working on sections of the body at a time. Beware of armpits and bellies...those seem to mat the worst. Legs are also a constant struggle to de-tangle. Good luck! |
The whites are the worst on Archie they mat and clump overnight from a totally mat free zone, humidity does not help a bit! Just resign yourself to the fact that you'll be buying a lot of grooming tools over the coming years! |

Is there some miricle thing out there I can use to keep the mats from forming daily? HELP!! The miracle cure consists of 2 options: 1. Shaving her down OR 2. Having an experienced person show you exactly how to get down to the skin the entire way when you are brushing. I prefer option #1 for any inexperienced puppy people. But if someone is really serious I will take the time to show them option 2. I find most people think they are getting all the way down to the skin but really aren't. |
I'm grooming Mady (oh the irony of her name ) every day, I'm working on improving it constantly, and I think she is fairly mat free. But just this Tuesday, I found some mats on her back, right next to her spine, I was surprised, since I thought I was keeping her main coat the best (the hard parts for me right now are around her ears and her feet), I spent 45 minutes working them out with my fingers and brushing them out. Hard work, but she felt superb after, like silk, and was completely beautiful. But still, I was surprised to find mats there in the first place |
