While my brothers love to sit in the shade ..I love to feel the sun on my face to remind me because of all of you I'm still here. I continue to love life. My brothers aren't always crazy about me as I always try to get moms attention and they sometimes get a tad jealous. The way around it was to have us take turns out in the yard. Four us of in the yard and pack mentality set in but three was doable as mom could watch the interactions better. So we have to take turns and my mom felt a bit guilty about that and still questions if this is the right home for me. Mom and dad went to the bank and spoke to the manager about possibly getting a loan to build a fence within the large yard. They didn't think they'd get it but the bank manager called them "refreshing". It musta been cause they talked about me and all the critters that share this place and how we are important to them. It worked!!!!! The bank manager oohed and awwed at my photo and those of my brothers/sisters and mom and dad got the loan to build the fence!!! Mom got a deal on chain link fencing on Craigs List and unloaded a 100 feet of it, along with poles and hardware ...my mom is tiny but she's tough when motivated. Then they found some men who love dogs and were willing to put it in for a great deal...voila!! A new fence!!! That way I'm safe when my younger brothers race around like mad cause they could really hurt me if they accidently knocked into me due to my bad hips. Now I'm safe! I also feel a bit better - thanks to all of you - Mom asked the vet for some meds for my hips and I can stand for longer periods without tiring. I often have to sit on my moms lap when we walk around the yard. She thinks it's endearing. She saw me trotting once!!! This is me when it happened and I was doing my favorite thing...I was smelling flowers just before she called my name. I still continue to eat well and found if that nasty lump in my mouth bothers me - I run to the outside tap and love to have the water gush into my mouth as if I'm rinsing it. I'm such a smart boy! I'm not sure if I will go to another home as I have my medical issues and the new fence has really helped so I will stay put for now. Gilligan |

Awww you guys are wonderful and thanks for the vote of confidence. I really had Gilligan's best interest at heart when I hadn't planned on keeping him. The biggest concern was always his safety and I was terrified that Merlin and Snoop would knock him over and hurt him when they start to play. They race around the perimeter of the yard full speed and sound like a herd of horses. It's actually scary for people and animals alike as they are so engrossed in their play that running into Gilligan was a real possibility. Panda too as he's slower but his hips aren't as bad as Gilligans and he's learned to get out of their way. The fence was a HUGE DEAL!!! Merlin has shown Gilligan he is the alpha dog and after a few face barks - Gilligan learned to acknowledge his status where I think he was oblivious to it before...approaching Merlin's food bowl or walking ahead of him on the path. Egads! The others know ...but Gilligan learned and no harm was done. Panda....OMG Panda!!! Tried to hump Gilligan to show his dominance. This was a shocker as Panda is soooo passive but guess he thought Gilligan was more passive than himself. Gilligan woofed...Panda backed off. Reminded me of two old men who don't quite have the energy they did in their youth and less testostorone and it was over in a min. Those two are so well matched as both the same age and speed - so it's nice I can have those two together and then let Merlin and Snoop out before or after and let them run around and rough house. Snoop, the youngest and most puppy- like wanted to rough house with Gilligan and this caused me the greatest concern as Gilligan is a bit too fragile for rough play. I still take Snoop on a leash when he's out with Gilligan. The dogs accepted Gilligan outside but not inside...so still working on that and have only had two in the house (same room) at one time. Gilligan sleeps in the family room when I'm not home and during the night as well. He goes back in on his own and not once does he bark or have an accident but waits patiently for his turn to go out or in the living room with one of his brothers. I felt extremely guilty about this and still question whether I'm being fair to him. I still think I wouldn't hesitate to allow him to go to a new home where he would be the only dog or shared a home with another senior. Then, I also think it wouldn't be fair to a new family regarding his medical issues and I think he is happy here. Ray informed me there is still a balance of aprox 85 dollars at the vets office for his care (I used some of it for the Deramaxx) and informed Ray, so just wanted to let you guys know the money is still being accounted for which many of you generously donated. I've taken two of my other pets in to the vets in the last two weeks and each time the office said "oh you have a credit which we'll use", but I've said no...that's Gilligan's fund and is separate. I do appreciate that you and OES rescue trusted me to make sure he gets what he needed, that he's so well loved by all of you and you gave him that second chance. He doesn't appear in pain as he doesn't yelp when getting up in the morning so the meds are helping him feel more comfortable in terms of his hips. He does walk with a strange gait however, so it's apparent his hips are bad but the vet said his knees are good. He eats well but I once saw him do the strangest thing...he chewed on a rock...causing his mass to bleed in his mouth and then he ran to the tap and waited for me to turn it on.He appeared to be rinsing out his mouth. However, it was just that one time although sometimes I notice he has extra saliva in his mouth (where the mass is) and he then goes to the tap and waits until I turn it on and rinses out his mouth. (This happens occasionally) He never ceases to amaze me with how smart he is. Well that's enough of my rambling for now. I'll keep everyone posted as to how he is doing. Gilligan and Marianne |
