Water dish behavior problem

My new OES puppy splashes in his water dish with his paws. What's up with that?

LOL... sounds like a playful puppy.... with the soul of a lab?
Breast stroke or crawl? Quite normal.
My puppy does that too, and our other dog did that as a puppy as well. In fact he still sometimes does it! :D
One of Tigerlily's favorite tricks!
Our sheepie moves the water in his dish back and forth with his nose,
then steps back to admire the waves !!!

Dancer will flip the bowl with her paw, watch it fly, and slide through it "superdog" style, and Sky will pick up the bowl and walk away with it, oblivious to the water going everywhere...lol
Mine puts tennis balls in her water bowl and then gives them back to you. Nothing like a wet tennis ball in your lap.
Mine just won't stop drinking. I'd happily take a little play instead!
Our dogs use the water bowls for drinking, but the cats deposit mousey men in all the water bowls around the house. Which is great when they go to retrieve the wet mousey man and leave it for me to step on. Eewww!
The new fun thing for the cats is to turn the bath water on with a very slow stream and they go and sit in the tub and bat at the water and drink from the stream.
Ashlan was taking a bath today and called Annie in with her. I immediatley got her off and started drying her incision off. It is closed now, but I am not sure how long we should wait to give her a bath. She only got the stitches out a few days ago.
Kids, dogs, and cats, a wonderful trio!! 8O LOL

Hi,

I once read that Sheepies generally do not like water...pffff from the sounds of these post most love playing with it!!!

You may consider getting a stand for your water/food dishes if it's something you'd like to discourage. Overall, by the sounds of the other post you doggie is just having fun.

The soultion:

Pretty bold huh, here's my best guess, buy one of those elevated dishes then they can't reach it with the paw. I think they sell them that grow with the dog.

What a riot this thread is!!! In her younger days and before we elevated her bowls, Drez used to bat the water dish around if it was dry and she wanted a drink. What clowns!

Pud dribbles after (and when) he drinks, then likes to lay down in the water on the floor. He also likes to walk off, then get a running start at it and try to stop. He usually only stops after he slides head first into the kitchen counter or the freezer, depending on whether he has enough curve going for him.
This thread is hilarous! Abby used to splash in the water like she was trying to scoop it out. I finally figured out that if there was the least little speck of sand or anything she could see she would try to get it out. My solution was to get her a dark green bowl where she can't see the bottom.

Our cat Gracie Lou, will only drink out of the water bowl if she sees me fill it and she can get to it before Abby drinks. If Abby drinks first, Gracie will sniff at the water then go drink out of the toilet. As if to say that the toilet water is cleaner than the water that Abby drank out of.

It's too funny!
Ohhhhhh the memories, our husky lab cross would spend his entire dayt splashing in the water dish. It was a small dish, so he couldn't lay down in, the next best thing was to create a big enough puddle on the floor to cool his feet...or stand two feet in and two feet out. He loved it when we bought him his own swimming pool for the summer.
Seems like they all have their little quirks with water! My Tucker will
dig very loudly in his dry water dish with both front paws until someone
looks at him. He then stares at you like - HEY! Did you hear that- it's
empty! He does the same with the food dish, but he drags that at the same time while he is digging. Always when we have company -
even if he has eaten 5 minutes before they arrived. Its like he is telling
on us, like we don't feed or water him!

Now our new puppy Zeke! Last night I found him twice laying on the floor
right in front of the water dish resting his little chin on the edge of the
"big bowl" just far enough in to flop his tongue in to get a drink.
Seriously lazy! He stayed in this position until he noticed us all laughing
-several minutes. Then, looking embarrassed put his head down and
closed his eyes and just peeked out like he was thinking 'if I can't see you, you can't see me.

I know they don't think like us- but sometimes it is fun to imagine
what if they did.

You just gotta laugh!
Many people recommend putting a chain inside so it's harder to splash.

domi!
My dog has suddenly decided to dig the water out of the toilet. What a mess! I thought well so I will close the lid, he opens the lid... so now we close the bathroom door.

How can i make him stop that habit? Any bucket or water dish gets "the treatment". sigh....
Well you could show him the flush level and have him fixated watching the water disappear intead of flinging it about the room. Most sheepdogs are more concerned with the toilet paper and how to carry it around the house. Count your blessings, yours could also love TP and try to cover up the soggy floor with paper
Hi my 12 month old German shepherd throws his whole face in his water bowl and tries picking it up and kicking it over! We then have the whole contents of the water bowl across the floors and this happens on a daily basis are there any certain types of bowl that will be able to stop him doing this??
:wag:

One happy German shepherd owner :)

There are water dishes with a ring around the top so they can only get their nose and mouth inside, no extra body parts. Would be nice if someone came up with a weighted cabinet where the dish would go inside, cover over top and whole affair would be to heavy to drag about the house.

Such water silliness is pretty much puppy activity, it does disappear as they mature. Enjoy it now for it will not last forever. Consider channeling this Olympic swimmer hopeful's water obsession to an inexpensive outdoor kiddie swimming pool.
I use a heavy crock dish with smooth sides (no lip on the top edge) to prevent this.
dudley drinks from the side and when the water is to low he paws it until it spills into the boot tray that we put under it and then drinks from the tray.i tried the elevated deal and he just dumps it. he paws at his food dish or he would push it all around the kitchen until that has spilled on the floor also. i finally made holder out of wood and he can't slide it anymore.
All our sheepies have drunk and then sloshed down our legs, carried full water bowls into living room then "paddle" in them, our Fred used to love playing at damming up the stream on his walk by having a "laying down drink" in it. Thought none of them have liked going for a walk in the rain and will go round puddles in the garden!!x
Not that sounds like normal.......play with the water bowl but avoid rain and puddles outside.

One sheepdog.......Crumpet I believe........would stick her nose in the water and blow bubbles. How she found that fascinating, I don't know but fun for us to watch.

And yes, all love to come out of the water bowl and make a beeline for their upright to wipe their beard or dribble. I have an extra long tablecloth that I lay across my legs before Kdog gets close. Woe be if first in the morning I get the water treatment through a thin nightgown.
I read Dawn's solution to the water dishes on someone else's post long before Steel arrived so I was all set to go. They make crock pots in all different sizes. They make very small ones for melting chocolate and such. We have moved past that now to the big heavy ones. I'm sure some of you saw the "Toylet" pic. What has happened now is Skye opens the toilet seat for Steel and Steel drops all of his toys into the toilet takes a drink, empties all the water onto the seat, floor and well everywhere and then Skye puts the lid back down for him. I think she secretly laughs and then walks away and waits for an unsuspecting person to approach! First your socks get soaked from the floor, then your butt gets soaked from the seat and then it dawns on you oh man I hope I'm not peeing on one of Steel's toys! It all starts to make sense that wasn't pee on the floor from Steel, my son didn't miss the toilet when he went potty and I might really want to look into getting the baby proof lock for the toilet seats! Haha! The upside is I am forced to clean 2 of my toilets and floors daily regardless of if I have time or not which is good considering I can't use any real cleaner because the dogs are drinking it and we are guaranteed a laugh no matter what!
Good thing you don't live with a year round outside pool, you whole house would be wet.
sounds good fun. Summer is very fussy about her water dish. For some reason she didnt like the stainless steel one and kept drinking out of the yorkies small one, so we dont use steel ones only for food. Tilly the other day (yorkie very small) found a kibble in the big water dish! She got soaked trying to get it out before I realised! Her face and even her ears were wet and she wasnt bothered at all!
