I called my sister to whine to her and she said "Um, idiot, why don't you borrow one of our generators?" It turns out that they several (her husband is an electrician and has extra stuff like this around). I had no idea and it just didn't seem worth it to spend $600 for a few hours of lost power so we were just going to tough it out or actually go spend that night at my sister's. Honestly, I think she only offered the generator so I wouldn't bring the dogs over, LOL. So, I'm happy to report I'm now a member of civilization again. We have a TV, internet and even an air conditioner in one room so all five of us (two humans, three dogs) are crammed into Owen's grooming room. Thank goodness I bought the window air conditioner to run while we use his dryer. Everyone laughed at me since we have central air but I'm soooo glad we have it now. We have a sofa bed in here and we've got three dogs plus us on a double bed and they're so happy to have the cool air back-- we all are! Our refrigerator and freezer are also back up. For all you Amityville Horror fans, we came home today to blood dripping from the ice dispenser. I was telling a friend about this and her husband yells out from the background "I've seen that movie, get out of the house!!!!" Luckily, it was only some melting liver that I had in the freezer for the dogs. I was very relieved because I really don't like to sleep with demons in my refrigerator. So that's our weekend excitement. Woohoo! |

OK, that blood dripping would have freaked me And Todd just called (he's out night fishing for big channel cats on the river) and told me he took my liver from the freezer for my dogs to use as bait... I'm glad you have the generator and some conveniences. We have a generator too - they are great! |
Generators rock, we have a diesel one at the farm for unexpected power outages. In the moutains so power outages arent out of the ordinary and considering even water needs power up there with tanks and a pump always a backup generator on standby. Even toilets need a flush with power for the water pump up there, YAY for modern thingys in the sticks, booooo for power outages in the burbs no fun at all in the summer heat. Hope your power is back soon no fun in summer when that happens especially if you are sick and burning up at the same time. |
Yeah, strict no flush policy with power outtages. It's our humid season where evaporative coolers don't work. I'm ready to buy a small room AC and hole up for 6 weeks. (Alas, they are probably sold out by now) . Fully understand the car trick, my new Dyson quit dead today so delayed until mid afternoon to take to shop just so I could use the AC in the car.......and took the long way going and coming home. I hate July and August! |
Pretty nice to have a sister with a spare generator. Can you keep it? Before reading, I was unconciously guessing as to what this post might be about -- the lack of power as a person (hard to imagine but perhaps James won some crucial debate) or as a female, or maybe even an unexpected civic commentary about something that went wrong at City Hall. Somehow, I didn't expect it to be about actually loss of power. LOL. Why did you choose the grooming room over the living room? |
The storms have been crazy this year. My boss lives in Hartland and has no power either. They told her it would be days until they get out there and put up new poles. We were fortunate this time around we just got some rain. When we got back from vacation last month our power had been out and was still out. We only had a puddle of water on the floor by the fridge. Remember years ago when the power grid went down? Thats when we got our generator. Here in Manchester the power goes out at least once a month. We had most of the house wired so when we plug the generator in everything except the central air comes on Not my idea. Hope your power comes on soon. Glad you guys and the pups are cool. The grooming room already had the air conditioner installed! Plus the lower level of our house is one giant open area so it wouldn't work with the air conditioner. We actually were in the living room before we went to bed. James made sure that we had tv everywhere! Owen's grooming room has the sofa bed and a 50" tv, too, so it's pretty comfortable. It's really more like his bedroom since he sleeps in there and keeps all his stuff there. |
Oh, and I forgot to mention the other crazy thing. The first night, I couldn't sleep so I was down on the couch and Clyde was dancing around. It was about 4:50 am and not normal for him to have to go but he was driving me crazy so I got up to let him out. I opened the door and probably 1/4 block away, I hear the most blood curling screams. At first I thought it was kids screwing around but then it got more intense and the woman started screaming "Help me! Help me!" So I get Clyde in and lock the door and keep listening for a second and then the screams abruptly stopped. So I stand there kind of dumbfounded for a minute and then called 911, thinking of that old Kitty Genovese story and I didn't want to be the one who did nothing. Cops came out and I wound up searching the neighborhood with them and we couldn't find anyone. The cops were really nice and didn't suspect I was a crazy person or anything. I really hope someone isn't dead or bleeding somewhere inside a house, though. It seems like my life is most exciting without power, I guess. |
WOW I would have had to jump in the car (doors locked) and went to investigate. We lose power all the time here no ryme or reason so we have a generater. Before we got one the same thing would happen I had to get dry ice for the freezer No water (we have a well and the electricity runs the pump) no flushing and no nothing. So nice you have a room to put everyone in. We were lucky my brother in law and hubby rewired something and we turn off the power turn on the generater and we are good to go. Hope you get power back soon!!! |
wow!! regarding the scream, i totally know the hesitation, what should i do, hesitation, call the cops feeling....did that when i heard thump thump thump from our alley at 230 in the morning...(i heard it all the way on the other side of the house)...i thought someone was chopping and dumping a body in our trash container...they never found anyone and no body.. living without a/c sucks.....our old (not sold yet) house, regularly loses power during the monsoon storms......3 yrs ago, the storms were soooo bad that we lost 30% of the 100 yr old HUGE trees in our hood and w/o power for 5 days....panda and i moved to ciscos house for the time frame...brian stayed at the fire station..... here are 2 pics of that storm i really would like to see a huge storm from my new tree house!!! and jill...i think youre brilliant to have the window a/c....bet your neighbors are jealous and hot! |
We grew up with a well, too and the first time our power wen out in the city, I was amazed that I had running water. It was like a miracle since I'd never known any other way! |
