I'm not sure if there is anyone in So. California on here who herds......maybe? A couple ideas - check out local clubs for other breeds - Australian Shepherds and Border Collies come to mind. They are usually pretty active in herding and could let you know where places are for classes or instinct tests. Also - groups who do herding - you can check their websites. It may only list trials on there, but should have some contact info: AKC - go to events and do a search ASCA - Australian Shepherd Club of America AHBA - American Herding Breed Association. Good luck! |
I'm also in Southern California and debating taking my youngest OES for a herding test run. I did some research and found a couple places that only work with border collies, but there is a place in Fallbrook that will work with all breeds. www.actionk9sports.com They do an instinct test for $25 and lessons are also reasonably priced. Where in SoCal are you located? I'm looking to start a meet up group in San Diego, but would welcome the prospect of meeting others in the SoCal area. |
Only border collies? That is silliness! OES, Australian shepherds, all kinds of good herding dogs out there. One of the things that sold us on the place where we will be doing our herding was how excited the trainer was at that thought of working with an OES (and she breeds border collies, so obviously loves them). I hope you guys end up in a good place where you and your dogs can have fun. |
There is someone in Calif who does herding I think. She does alot of obedience and agility - if I remember correctly. She is also on the OES breeder referral list where is where I found her when looking for my puppy. I think her name is Chris? I'll do some more looking and see if I can find the info. |

The main herding person in California (OES) is Debra Lehr. She's a breeder as well as an AKC and AHBA herding judge. Has BCs and OES. In addition to herding she does obedience and rally, but not agility. Or at least not yet She's in Wilton, CA, so not close by any means, but it may be worth talking to her about where to go for training in Southern Cal. She's not on the OESCA breeder referral list, probably because she breeds so rarely and her puppies go mainly to performance homes, so if someone wants her contact info, PM me please, and I'll be happy to look it up for you. The other person to talk to about training (any venue) in the Southern Cal area is Linda Zimmerman. I'd be happy to look up her contact info too. Both of them are great resources and just flat out nice people. Kristine |
http://www.qualitydogtraining.org/Sheep ... ation.html This one is in Lake Elizabeth, near Palmdale. It would help to know where you are. I have been to one lesson with her, but Bella is dog aggressive, so it wasn't the right thing for her. |
Yes, I herd sheep with my two oes. They love it! look up Jerry Stewart herding on the internet. He trains in Long Beach, Anaheim and Perris. |
Let me know about Linda please...now that Nigel is an only here I need to keep him busy and with me as much as possible. We are both sad I think. |
