Where to go for grooming??

Just curious, where do you take your OES? Would PetSmart or Petco be able to handle an OES, or a professional who specializes in this breed? And at what age did you take your dog in for a first grooming? THanks :D

I would ask whomever you take them to how many OES they have done.
Abbey is now 4 months old...she has been to the groomer several times for a bath and comb out. I took her to my regular groomer who has never done a sheepdog which leads me to look elsewhere now. I was not impressed since she did Abbey's feet like a "poodle" ..ugh...I went to Petsmart last time and I loved the job they did on her and also found out that they groom an OES there on regular schedule; he is in full coat. I am one who has my dogs groomed monthly..my other dog being a shih tzu...
Anybody have any opinion on Pet Smart as a groomer? I wasn't sure when I first saw it..but having observed them these past few months I'm thinking maybe they are OK...
I've used Petsmart with mixed results. Luke and Daisy were okay, Rosco and Beau were not. Beau is heavy coated and no matter where I take him he's never dry and ends up matted if we don't take care of it. Rosco was clean but not brushed well at all. To be fair Petsmart is cheaper than any where else. To be honest other than my breeder and the handler we used for Beau I haven't found anyone great. If your breeder is close that may be an option, my breeder loved grooming and would do my dogs for the shows.
I took Mollie to Petsmart and they had her all day and gave her back to me with damp feet. She has a very thick coat. But I have never had her coming out looking great. I also took my shi/poo there and they tied a blue bandana on him and when I took it off he was all blue. They said that I must have left him out in the rain. Can you believe that comment?

I took Mollie to a do it yourself place and I was telling the lady about Mollie being given back damp, and she said that some places put fans on the dogs while their in the cages and dry them that way. I guess I need to ask more questions of the groomer from now on.
A few years ago I had taken Norman to Petsmart because they were running a gromming sale. My opinion: Never again!

Norman is not a skiddish dog and the only time that I have seen him upset is when he came out of the grooming area at Petsmart. When they brought him out to me they were dragging him through the grooming area. Dragging him, he was in a permanent sit and they drug this 100 pound dog by his collar like they were moving furniture. He then proceeded to vomit and have diarrhea everywhere and the look in his eyes was of sheer terror. I have never felt worse for my dogs in my entire life. (Did I mention that he was still damp and vaguely soapy?)

When I went to pick Norman up I took my cocker spaniel in to get her nails cut. She was a tiny dog and one guy tackled her to the ground while another cut her nails. Three of them ended up bleeding.

Also, when I was at Petsmart the other day a very small terrier type dog was left alone on the grooming table, he wiggled off and was hanging by the grooming noose. I pointed it out to the cashier who began banging on the window. The response from the groomer was, casual at best.

This is just my experience at one Petsmart. Maybe it's just my location but, who knows. Our new groomer is an OES owner who used to show sheepdogs. What more can you ask for? The last time Carl was there, it was 6 or 7 hours and I got at least 4 phone calls for updates and double checking of exactly how I wanted this section or that section done. She is awesome! Keep looking until you find the situation that suits you best.
I also have never had a good experience with PetSmart. I took my bearded collie mix there years ago and she came back damp and really not looking much different from when I dropped her off and she was acting all upset. Everyone seemed inexperienced and unpleasant. I'm not saying that they're all like that, but my experience was.

Now we have a nice groomer who really seems to care about the dogs. It's important that they look good but it's just as important for them to have a good experience.
Wow, lots of different experiences, sounds like it just depends who you get. I definitely want it to be a positive experience, I don't know that Max would be ready for this yet because in order for me to even comb him I have to give him treats to keep him busy!! When I comb him without treats he thinks the comb is a toy and keeps biting it.
My advice would be to ask for references, the more the better. It's also a great way to find other sheepies in the area. I've found a groomer in our town that has an OES on a regular basis, but all she does is shave her down. She has no experience with a full coat and I'm not going to let Abby be the guinea pig for her to practice. I'd rather do it myself.

I've also tried PetsMart, but I was not impressed. She came out damp and was not combed out well. I even brushed her out before she went in so she was mat free. She came home with more knots and tangles than she went in with. My husband said she looked better when I groomed her myself. Abby was petrified going in and coming out. She wouldn't even look at me on the ride home. She looked like a child pouting while looking out the passenger window. It took an hour and a half ride home with lots of nummies for her to even acknowledge that I was in the car with her.

I'm not saying that all PetsMarts are the same. My cousin has a Sheltie and loves Petsmart. I find they do better with smaller breeds.

Good luck!
We've had a GREAT experience at Petco. MY initial thought was to find out how many OES they did on a regular basis and to meet the groomers. Pooh took to all of them (big shocker there) and I got to meet the OES owners that they groomed and the dogs looked great.

Obviously I'm a special case since he is neither OES or Lab, however, Pooh's beautician does a great job on him!
I just got Nab done at Petsmart and it was wonderful. I've had her washed and brushed out there 3 times since I got her last July. The girl did a scissor cut on her this time and she looks beautiful. She told me in advance that if she was too matted or couldn't stand for that long they might have to shave her but she did the whole cut with scissors! I didn't want her shaved but she need a cut for spring.

I agree about asking for references. I think it all depends on the manager and the groomers at the store. At ours there is a large window where we can watch the grooming. I have to book a couple weeks in advance to get Nab in but as soon as we walk in the door all the clerks and groomers know her and give her pets and kisses. When she's done she is all dry, no mats and smells good! Nab will even give the groomer a kiss goodbye.

good luck finding a great groomer.
I just picked up Max from his first grooming appointment!! They had a puppy special at Petsmart, and he looks like a different puppy!! He's just beautiful, they trimmed his nails and paw hairs, sanitary trim, I opted to keep his face hair but I think they shaped it a bit, he smells great and looked like a cotton candy poof when I saw him, I'll have to post some pictures real soon, my computer is not functioning properly so it might take a while. Another side benefit of today's excitement is that he is now worn out and I can have some more coffee
Sharon
