Dont get me started - rant warning.

One of the receptionist who used to work for me rang me to ask about her new cat, an 8 year old pure bred.

I am still fuming, not with her though. Long story short, she has rescued Kwah. The previous owners said she was too territorial. 8O Ummmm she's an 8 year old cat, that's pretty much normal for most cats.

They got sick of her and brought two new pure bred kittens home. Kwah didnt really take to them, so they took her to the vet and asked for her to be euthanased.

I am horrified. She is a living creature not a piece of furniture to be tossed out when you fancy a new look. I had to post here, Wayne wont let me rant about it. It makes him feel sick.

What was the question??? Is she going to keep the kitty???

MY daughter found a tiny kitten, in an alley, while driving her beat when she was a police officer. VERY young! She took him home, named him Winston and live to be 14, he was her 'attack cat'...!!!!

It IS very sad to 'replace' one animal for another just because they are difficult. I don't understand people like that at all!!! But isn't that why our shelters are overcrowded?? How many people just give their animal up because they have become an inconvience? Very sad...for ALL of us!!!!
Oh yes she's definitely keeping the kitty. She just wanted to know about their personalities and whether they are territorial.
It sounds like she isnt any more territorial than your normal cat.

This is one spoilt kitty already, so its all worked out for her. But I keep wondering if they'll be two more kitties who'll be dumped in a few years time.
Mim, any of us involved in rescue hear this same story over and over. It doesn't mean we get any less steamed over the ignorance of some people, though.

It's bad enough when someone buys/adopts/rescues a younger animal and finds quickly that it doesn't fit in with their family. Having a pet that's been a loyal family member for years and dumping it out like yesterday's trash... well, there's no hell hot enough for them to burn in. Still, we bite our lip and do all we can to help the animal. And sometimes we just have to rant about it because if we didn't we'd probably go postal. 8O As your friend found out, one person's trash is another one's treasure.
Nita that's why I admire you guys who do constant rescue. :clappurple:
I dont think I could manage it without loosing all faith in humans.

Yes, this is how Harley came to me...and she was only a 1 year old OES. It's just amazing the total disregard for life some people have. So sorry to hear about poor Kwah and very glad she is safe now. 8)
You want to hear one worse? The local animal organization I volunteer at found out that a lady they took in a dog for was shopping around the area for puppies. She would get a puppy and once it grew into a gangly dog, she would dump them off at local shelters and get a brand new puppy.

She did this 8 times before the shelters suspected something was fishy. They have since communicated with all the shelters in the area and she will not be getting anymore puppies from them. The only thing that is sad is that people in the area looking to rehome puppies won't know about what she is doing.
Old English Sheepdog...MUCH grooming right???? It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out!!!!

Pearl was dropped off at the Humane Society at 4 months old...REASON???? Her owners didn't realize how much work the grooming would be on her...and you could tell!!!! When we saw her, she was a pathetic mass of matts, grass, 'critters', dirt...in her coat... The grosser she got, the farther out in the yard they put her. When she came to me, she didn't know how to go up stairs and was afraid of the big dog in the shiny thing in my bedroom ((the mirror!!)))

Their loss was my gain!!! but what she had to go through to get to me was a nightmare for her I am sure!!!!!!!!
I completely "get it" when you rant...so rant away! I've told the students whom I work with that sometimes being in rescue causes you not to like people so much. On the other hand, it also allows you to see the good side of people too. Those that adopt an older senior animal or one that isn't considered "perfect". The ones I'm angry at are: The awful people who dump their animals or who show up and say "I am not being fair to my kitty and don't have time for him/her anymore". Blaaaaaaaaah so they think leaving it at a shelter or trying to give it to rescue who don't have just "one" but many ...it will get more attention???
Sigh I could go on and on.

I previously mentioned how the shelter in my area was so overwhelmed with animals they did a cull with all the cats. Just last week I was asked to take two, Himi and Quincy. I said no as I was so full - not realizing they were in immediate danger as they were still putting animals down. That night, I emailed the shelter and said okay I'll take them after I cleared out space in my home for new ones....too late, they were put down the previous day. I am full of regret but more angry at the people that left them there. Now I don't fault those that have no other alternatives - people whose marriages broke up and are unable to get pet housing or family illness, but the majority are people tire of their pets. The following day I got two more cats out of Iso (Isolation) to free up some space, one was Himi's brother and the other was a black cat like Quincy. Now most of the rooms in my house are full...and it makes me sad and mad...irresponsible owners who don't take responsibility for the pets duration of their life. Okay I'll stop now too.

Val, could you link some photos of Pearl? I'd like to see her, browsing through your photo album I see mostly photos of Heart (and Harry) (not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm smitten with Heart, she's so lovely :hearts: )

I can't understand treating an animal you bring into your house and (supposedly) love like that. Obviously my brain doesn't work that way, nor anyone else's here. My hats off to the people who do work at rescues, I don't know if I could control my temper with such callous people out there.

Ranting here is probably a very healthy thing, so don't hold back!
^^^^^

Pearl is very camera shy, but I do have a couple in my photo gallery...I like this one the BEST!!!!!!

mim.......I didn't mean to hijack your thread!!!

But this just proves What Nita said......one man's treasure!!!

And Pearl is my treasure!!!!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
you like that picture best, but pearl doesn't. no wonder she's camera shy. :cow:

ok, i've had the opportunity too save a couple human lives and many more animal lives. all things considered, i'd rather save animals. bad attitude? maybe, but i'll still step up for the two leggers.
Hijack away, its much better to have the good news. :clappurple:

I new people got rid of their pets for inexcusable reasons (like grooming or no space or no time, why didnt you think of that before 8O ) but I guess I never realised that it was for such terribly inexcusable reasons, like we're bored and just bought two more kittens. Kwah is an 8 year old pure bred cat with gorgeous temperment and completely healthy and they didnt even take her to a shelter for rehoming. Just straight to a vet to be euthanased. I couldnt be a vet either.
...Mim..I totally agree there are some terrible, uncaring, selfish people in the world who should not own any living things, but, there are angels here too!! And, I would like to think that I am one, like you, and everyone else on this wonderful forum!

We have to commit, like your friend, to help when we are needed.
That is so awful. I couldn't even imagine doing that.
"Just straight to a vet to be euthanased. I couldnt be a vet either."

I've overheard our vet's office (both the vets and the techs) arguing with people both in person and on the phone about euthanizing healthy pets. One of the techs told me "in confidence" that they'll actually agree to discuss it with them to get the people to come in in person with the animal, and then frequently use that as an opportunity to get them to simply surrender the animal to them. They then rehome them, or if necessary, take them to a shelter themselves.

She also told me that nearly every one of the people who work there (and there are five vets and over twenty techs) has a dog or cat they've gotten that way. She then named off many of them. Quite a few had more than one. Our regular vet (favourite, specializes in osteo surgeries and is still hard to get in to see, but we try to keep up with him whenever we can) has gotten most/all of his that way over the years.

I've always said that the people at that vet clinic are amazing. This is more proof. (And I imagine this goes on at vet clinics everywhere.)
My vet will not euthanize a healthy animal, either. They just take the dog or cat and find it a home.

People suck. They think everything is disposable, even a pet they've had for 8 years! When Oscar was 10 weeks old and we picked him up from the breeder, she said that if for any reason we couldn't keep him, or we found a deaf dog too difficult, that she would take him back. Hubby and I kindly informed her that even if Oscar turned out to be a peeing, chewing, pooping, biting machine, (which he was for about 4 months :D )that she would never see him again. :D He was ours the minute we picked him up, and he will be ours until he is no longer on this earth. Period.
