McCartney... what is he? - DNA RESULTS COMING!

McCartney won a DNA test from PetFinder, and should be receiving the results within a few weeks (sent it in early June). I'm not sure how "accurate" the results are from these tests, but thought it would be fun to have a poll. I'll update everyone once I receive the results.

Here is a puppy photo and an adult photo to help. Oh... and he's 70lbs and skinny under all that hair.

Well.. WHATEVER he is....he is adorable!!!!!!!!! :aww: :aww: :aww: :aww:

Maybe a NEW designer breed?????

A BEARDSHEE???????????????????????????????
To me he looks border collie/OES.

Some of those tests have come back with some really impossible sounding results, but I think I would still try it. :D
We are waiting for Harry's results as well. I'm sure it's mostly Border......but what else??

Yea... I've seen some great reviews and bad reviews for the tests. Since we won the DNA as a contest through PetFinder, I figured that was the best way to go. I don't think I would have paid the money for it based on the mixed reviews. Plus it'll be fun either way, even if they come back with something CRAZY.
I'm excited to hear.

One of our vets did the test on her pound puppy and found out quite a few breeds were represented. I can't quite wrap my brain around how they do it, don't all dogs come back as "wolf" if you go back far enough?

I'm looking forward to hearing. I vote St. Bernard, for no particular reason, in addition to Sheepie and border collie/collie...

Ooh... St. Bernard! I like! :)
I'm taken by McCartney's pronouced stop.....vertical between the eyes. St. Bernard is as good as anything
He IS a very adorable dog. I always love seeing his face, but I never thought he had any OES in him!!

Be interesting what it says! A vet I know had his done just to see how accurate it was since he kept getting asked about it, and they weren't accurate (he knew what his dog was), but he still thought it was fun seeing what all they said!
I wondered if he's a bearded collie x border collie.
Cant wait to find out.
fyi... we were told his mom was an OES at the time that we adopted him from the rescue shelter. I know... they could have been wrong (we never saw the mom), but we've been going on that assumption. So it will be interesting to find out what the results say.
ok then I'll change my vote to OES x border collie :D
Our first sheepie cross was BRANDON, and we were told he was a sheepdog crossed with "dog" by the lady we got him from. (It was an oops. Someone's son forgot to lock the gate.)

One of the vets we saw thought sheepdog and collie. Hard to say.

But McCartney reminds me a lot of BRANDON, so collie is a possibility too, in my mind. BRANDON didn't have the short hair by the eyes that McCartney does, but I think that makes McCartney look a little more collie-ish.

Having said that, who knows what it will say...are you prepared?

I never wanted Hudson tested. For the first year and a half I was convinced it would come back "rat in a dog suit" with a little "slipper" thrown in. LOL

I've definitely thought collie since he has this really pretty reddish/brown hair on one of his legs (that reminds me a lot of my two collies I had growing up). Also... don't let the short hair by the eyes fool you either... My husband gives him a hair cut about every two-three weeks to keep it short. I'd love to see what he would look like if we let it grow.

I'm not sure how prepared I am... If the results are awful... I may not share. HAHA! I hope he has OES in him. Otherwise, I'll feel like I've been such a liar when people have asked what he is.
Hey...if it doesn't come back as OES don't fret. He's an honorary OES at the very least. Once you're in with sheepie lovers, you're in for life.

And still, I ask, how does DNA testing on dogs work anyway? Shouldn't they all just come back as wolf?!?!?! (Which would thrill every single chihuahua owner on the planet.)

This is what the Web site for the DNA test says:

".....DNA-based breed test, giving mixed breed dog owners the opportunity to find out just what breeds comprise their beloved four-legged family member. By comparing DNA markers found in your pet with those specific to purebred dogs, the breed test can identify the breed composition of your mix breed dog and report that information to you, the proud pet parent, in a Certificate of DNA Breed Analysis."

They only identify the DNA markers of approximately 100 breeds, so I can see why they aren't as accurate. Ha... My brother has a chihuahua and I'm sure he would LOVE that! haha
RESULTS COMING SOON! They were shipped to me on 7/26, so they should arrive any day now! Get your votes in!
I've checked back on this post frequently...I'm dying to know! So glad it's close.
OK!! The results are in! :clappurple:

Breed Composition Analysis:

Primary: No primary breeds

Secondary: Boxer & Old English Sheepdog

In the Mix: Collie, Shetland Sheepdog & Cocker Spaniel
Interesting, very interesting :D

Just out of curiousity - do you send in pictures with the sample? Or do they ask any "leading" questions that may scew the results?

We had the option to include a photo (for the print out of the certificate). I submitted the test on June 9 and submitted the photo about 2 weeks ago. I submitted the photo below. Other than that, no nothing else was submitted.

I had won the test from PetFinder, and think these results are more fun than they are for accuracy. The organization that did the testing only captures a limited list of breeds in the results, so they are skewed simply because of that. They pick out genetic traits that are strong in those breeds to identify the results.

Wow... I never would have thought boxer in the mix. But then again, with all that hair, who knows.

Well, McCartney... whatever you are, you'll always be Old English to me!
Wow McCartney...interesting.

I see the sheepie and the collie and others, but boxer? You wear it well dude!
