How does your OES take to water?

Kenzie has just discovered water, as in the river!
He loves it and runs up and down it splashing and jumping. You can just tell how happy he is in it.
He swims quite well too.

By the time we have walked home, he has lost a lot of the wet, and I groom him through an hour or so later and his coat is back to normal. It's a little more work, but well worth it just to see his joy. The only trouible is that I can't walk past the river now without him heading for it!

I have even seen pictures of OES's swimming in the sea, complete with life jackets!

What are other peoples' experiences with their OES and water?

Nik :)

Asterisk is a water dog. She loves the sprinkler and the wading pool I got her. Ever since she was a puppy she likes to dunk her front legs into the water and splash all of it out and onto the floor.

Wendel, on the other hand hates to get wet. He also hates dirt. Go figure, huh?
MO is my only water dog and only via sprinkler. She can no longer run from sprinkler to sprinkler biting the water, arthritis in her paw, but she still loves her showers. Last night she stood there, just like the pix below (taken 5+ years ago) biting the water and moaning in ecstacy. For her, water must move.

lifejacket as he was in full coat -
why does he need to be in a lifejacket :) ?
Soo cute tho! <3

And do you blow him after the swimming or just let him dry :) ?

I would like to know about this too. We are taking Mady to a cottage for a week in August. Should I be looking for a lifejacket?

The hair is too heavy when wet - it will drown them. It's like us trying to swim with heavy clothes on - when they get wet, they get heavy. :( :(
The more coat, the heavier it is when wet.

And yes, I blow dry when done. Otherwise it will dry in big clumps and be hideous to brush out later. The longer and thicker the coat, the more important this is.
When the coat is shorter I have fudged on warm days where we have a good wind. Then I stay out and brush /fluff every few minutes, just like I would with the dryer.

Also, if they aren't brushed out before they get wet (swimming or a bath), the tangles dry into mats.
Gus HATES the water.

The first time we took Gus with friends to the lake shore, their labs jumped right in. Gus tentatively put one paw into the water, hastily withdrew it, and stayed on shore with us uprights. We often take Gus on walks near the lake and he's never shown even the slightest inclination to get wet.

Which is why we thought it was curious last summer when the gal at Doggie Daycare told us Gus had a ball splashing around their pool with his doggie friends. Gus and water???? We were skeptical but went and bought Gus one of those large plastic kiddie pools for the backyard. Did Gus go in? Nope. So now we have what must be the area's largest water dish.
I sent my hubby out to get a lifejacket for Bella since I got worried the first time I took her to the pond for a little dip. She was trying to paw the water and drink it at the same time. Her lifejacket is great. I paddle out on a little inflated tube and she swims right out with me. next time I am going to take a little video and post. Her coat is only 2 inches long and I chamoise her off and let her air dry. Next day she gets her weekly brush out and I have only noticed a few little tangles. If I was really good I would dry her out but I think she like to stay cool as long as possible .... it has been in the 90's all this past week and she is not happy about that.
I am just wondering if anyone knows how old a Sheepie should be before engaging them in water sports---such as a lake/stream etc?

I know they can "pick" up stuff from a body of water, so I wasn't sure what was age appropriate.

We do a lot of sailing, hiking, lake stuff etc, so I want to be sure that Dahlia will be safe when we introduce her to the water this spring/summer.
That's a good question. And I bet it really depends on the water quality where you go. I know my daughter was paranoid her min pin would die if he went in the Hudson (when she lived in NY)!!

Around here (MN, the land of 10000 Lakes!) it's really hard to avoid water. Mostly I try to not have them drink it. I'm not overly anal about it, I just offer other water whenever possible. None of mine have ever gotten sick from the water (and we always have labs who can't stay out of it).

We have a couple yard ponds, and that's when I learned Chewie was fixated with water... Here he is at 4 months and he had been at our house for less than a week!

and he's never slowed up yet! When we were showing I lived in fear he would sneak of and take a dip...
He did a couple times...
Imagine this show puppy starting from this:

and turning into THIS after a dip in the yard pond!

But other than the mess, we have escaped actual illness!

But, my friend's cocker used to get the stomach bugs from drinking out of their pond every spring. They live in town, have a massive, show-stopper pond setup with water falls and all, but Boji got sick from drinking in it.... :( And that was right in their own yard. :lmt:
NO ONE should EVER jump into the Hudson in NY! That water is beyond dirty and polluted! 8O 8O

Your water and lakes up in Minnesota are probably much cleaner than the wter we drink down here in NY! I think catching something depends on where they are swimming. Stagnant waters tend to have a bacteria called Giardia - or some spelling like that. If they drink that water, the Giardia gets into their system and can make them quite ill.

I would think salt water is not a problem...We live near the Ocean. But my dogs are not big on going in. As the waves break onto the sand and hit their feet, they run the other way  I think a life jacket is always good to use.

Giardia aka "Beaver Fever" also happens in rivers. Its just any water where an infected animal drinks from. Where I live, there are plenty of glacier fed lakes and rivers. Even as a young child your taught not to drink water out of the rivers for this exact reason.
It spreads from animal to animal (through water), animal to person (through water), and person to person (direct contact). It doesn't matter how clean the water looks, you can still get it.
Riley loves to play in water... whether it is the bay, ocean, river, stream, or pond she loves it! She also loves to play in her baby pool and splash all of the water out. However, if it is raining, mud puddles, the yard is muddy, or there is dew she will not step out of the house! It makes no sense... this is when she becomes a little princess!!

Tiggy is fussy too. Doesn't matter how muddy or dirty the water is, as long as it's at the park and she can run in it.

Wet back courtyard, ewwww, nope not going out there not even to potty.
