Lump under the skin on Max's left shoulder

Max was groomed today, and cut pretty short. He is miserable in this 90 plus heat--- and the shorter coat seems to make him more comfortable. While I was playing with/ petting him tonight, I felt a lump under the skin, in the left shoulder area. Of course my mind immediately went to cancer  . I will make an appointment first thing tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone has had this type of situation? Possible cyst? It moves, and is not hard. It seems to bother him when we touch / pet that area. Not sure how long it has been there ( about the size of a dime) as this is the first we have noticed it.

Generally, if it is soft & you can sort of pick it up & move it a bit, it is a sebaceous cyst. They can just be bothersome but aren't usually much to worry about. Now that isn't to say that's 100% but it is the general "rule of thumb". I still always have my vet check them out. As a matter of fact, I had Isaac (my 12 year old) in today to have a lump checked. I was worried as it was the size of a pencil eraser, located under his right eye & felt "hard" to me. Vet was able to move it around, stuck a needle in it & withdrew some clear fluid & told me not to worry, it was a cyst. The reason I had thought it was "hard" was that it was positioned directly on top of the bones that form the sinus cavity. Of course when I pressed on it I was pressing it onto the bone....duh!
Heart had one. I was worried too!! But it was a cyst.

The vet drained it a couple of times, but it just kept filling up, so I decided to have it removed and also, while she was under, to get her teeth cleaned.

Everything went well although she was whoozy for about a day.

Keep us posted!!!! Please!!!! :D
How strange that three sheepies would manifest skin problems on the same weekend!

Last Saturday I noticed a bare spot the size of a quarter on Gus’s left front leg just above his elbow. The skin was inflamed and scaly and had a delimiter (crease) at one margin. Being Independence Day weekend, our vet’s office was closed, so I spent the rest of the weekend looking at canine dermatological photos on the Web and imagining the worst. I was a basket case!

Our vet was in on Monday; she shaved the area on Gus’s leg, took one look, and pronounced it a simple callus (WHEW!). She said large dogs of Gus’s age (5 years) tend to develop elbow calluses from laying on hard surfaces and suggested we get him a soft bed (r-i-g-h-t: like Gus the sleepwalker is going to confine himself to one spot), but also said not to worry.

Lori, from my panicked “research” (and from the time my husband had a sebaceous cyst on his chest) it sounds like Marilyn is right: Max has a simple cyst. We’ll keep our paws crossed.
I agree with the others. Sounds like a cyst. Of course it's worth getting it checked just in case, but if it's soft and self contained and you can move it around...cyst. Nothing to worry about. It probably won't be worth doing anything with, and just having a needle aspiration may take out some of the stuff inside, leaving it smaller anyway. (My vet does them all the time, like a regular part of a check up...we had two very lumpy seniors a while back.

We've had a couple pop on their own...a little messy, but easily cleaned up and then they're gone, and if they are in the way or the dog is fussing they are very easily removed.

Having said all that, I still freak out when I find one. It's always worth getting checked out for your own peace of mind. It's part of loving a long haired breed.
If it's soft and moveable, probably nothing but a cyst. Jack has two big ones on his chest......call them his Man Boobs. Mo has several across the chest area. Vet felt MO and said, no problem. Never have had her check MO but the lumps feel the same. Glacier's 2 exploding cysts were hard.
Brick has a lump on his left ribcage.
It's soft, kinda squishy, and moves around.
The vet told me it's a benign fatty tumor and that all dogs get them as they age. Nothing to really worry about.
Thanks! This makes me feel better. He has an appointment tomorrow afternoon, so I'll let you know. I do, however have something else to worry about now, and bring to the Vet's attention. This morning I found what looks like a red mole on his back--- at first I thought it was a tick. Red, and about the size of a pencil eraser. Hard to the touch. Poor guy... I hope all of these bums are just simple little things... :(
Lori, all my sheepdogs have been lumpy, fatty tumor buggers as they got older. The other breeds, not at all. These cysts on Glacier are the exception!
Lori Frankie already has little lumps on his body. The vet says there sebaceous gland cysts. Hope everything goes well at the vet tormorrow. Keep us posted.
