3200 sq ft of shingles (our house is much smaller than that, but there are several valleys and peaks, etc....so we needed way more shingles) 11 000 roofing nails 4 roofing guns (three broke) 4 rolls of tar paper (which I had to roll through Home Depot as I couldn't lift them and no one would help me. Thanks Home Depot) 2 completely botched deliveries - Thanks again Home Depot 947 screaming matches with hubby over roofing 10 amazing friends and family members who volunteered 6 elaborate lunches (hey, I didn't pay them I should at least feed them) 3 cases of water, 6 cases of Coke, a case of Dr. Pepper and some Coke Zero eleven days of thunderstorms (out of 21 days this carried over) one flooded bedroom when the tarp blew off Two TORNADO WARNINGS... And two terrified sheepies howling at the scary noises on the roof from the safety of their crates... BUT IT'S DONE. IT'S DONE. IT'S FINALLY DONE. I'm going for a nap. Because in a few hours, I have to clean up the debris, but for now....yipppeee! It's done. (P.S. I tried, but I couldn't make the syllables fit the music for the 12 Days of Christmas, and I'm too tired to try harder.) |

How about a picture! |
We will be needing one in the next few years.....where'd those 20 years go? Thinking about those metal roofs Mike Holmes used on Holmes on Homes. They are available here, special order.....doubt I could afford them. Our main problems are high sunlight cooking the shingles and wind blowing them off. I'm too old to be climbing onto roofs anymore. |
Congrats! A couple of weeks ago, Nichols Hills was hit by an extremely heavy rain and hail storm. This is an area of huge, expensive homes (wish I could live there). Many of them lost their tile roofs to the hail. My mother had me drive by last week - funny to see these beautiful homes covered with blue tarps. Apparently they will be semipermanent covering as the tiles are handmade in Italy - to order. It will be 2 years before the tile arrives. |
Tracie!!! I'm so jealous and was just talking about our roof over morning coffee. When we purchased our place we got a discount as they took into account our roof needed replacing asap. That was before the sewer backup and destruction of my fence via drunk driver. I find pieces of the wood shingles on the ground every morning and have been praying since. So this morning ...we were discussing our roof again and I saw your post. Sheepieboss, two years ago we had someone give us an estimate on metal roofs but the cost is far more substantial than asphalt or duroid shingles...they were quoted as 19,000 compared to 40,000 for a metal one. I've got two friends who have them and they say that while the roofs are not noisy in the rain the gutters they have to have installed specifically for metal roofs are very noisy. The gutters were very expensive too..over 2,000. The other problem is the snow doesn't accumulate, but in heavy snowstorms it slides off very quickly and almost buried the mailman who arrived at the door at that moment. So while I'd love to have a metal roof I've decided due to cost and the other factors I'll probably go with something else. The trouble is what material do I choose? From what I've read the past week - it seems the rubber roofs have an incredible life span...50 years compared to 15 for duroid (although companies claim 25 years.) So back to Tracie...I'm really jealous! Congrats on your new roof. We want pics!! Marianne |
So much for special tiles With Oklahoma weather especially the severe type, I'd not be looking at tile. Contrats Tracie......how well I remember the noise! One replacement was when grapefruit size hail turned the roof into swiss cheese and then a simple, old roof job. I've always lived in fear of a rain storm when the roof was being reshingled. Sorry about the bedroom.......new insulation and drywall? |
Yeah, glad you got it done! We got ours done last year but we paid someone to do it. Lee is afraid of heights and it needed completely 100% ripped off as it had skip sheathing, wood shingles, and 1 or 2 layers of old regular shingles on top off that. What a mess. |
My mother just had her roof replaced. I'm not sure how many square feet of tiles were used but they stripped off the old roof, replaced a few sheets of plywood, all new vinyl drip edge, 6 feet of the ice & water membrane on all edges and ridges and around all vents, 15 lb felt paper, new ridge vent, the 30 year architectual shingles, and all the clean-up and haul-away. They worked about 6 hours the first day and about 4 hours the next day. Got it all done for $5K U.S. Looks great. |
Well, we're still high and dry. There's no real damage apparent on the walls of the bedroom, and all still smells great, so I'm thinking we'll get away with a paint job and new flooring down the road. The carpet was already destroyed by years of sheepies, so it's not urgent. I bleached the whole thing and it doesn't look great, but smells fresh and clean. We picked up the shingles for approximately 3K Canadian, including the other "stuff" needed. We talked to two roofing companies (didn't have them come out as I didn't want to pay for estimates) and they all ballparked it at 12 to 15K, sight unseen. I sure owe a huge debt of thanks to all the friends and family members who gave up their time and expertise. They saved us a bundle. We have a number of peaks and valleys and weird spots, so I'm sure that the estimates were on the conservative side. I'll see if I can sneak up later and get a few shots. They really just look like shingles to me. LOL |
