Have you tried Bert's Bees Herbal insect repellent? It came in last or near last in the Consumer's Reports but it went up against products with DEET which you DO NOT want to use around your dog. http://www.burtsbees.com/natural-products/outdoor-protection/herbal-insect-repellent.html |
you could try making your own natural blend using essential oils. get a spray bottle, in the bottom use a spirit as oil and water dont mix so the oil has to be blended into this first. you dont need much only a teaspoon or so. essential oils suitable are cedarwood, citronella, lemon grass, tea tree, geranium, eucalyptus. out of these i would probaly use lemon grass, geranium and eucalyptus. but choose any 1-3 of your choice and add a total of 15 drops to your spirit base (vodka is good or you can even use a vinigar) so you now have 15 drops of oil in a teaspoon or so of spirit etc in a spray bottle. now shake daily for a week. then top up with water and shake again. the longer you leave it the stronger it gets. shake before using and spray all over but be careful not to spray into the eyes. also do not spray on varnished or painted surfaces. hope this helps |
I don't know what to suggest. We use Deep Woods Off when we're desperate. I am sure it's not the best, but I've seen the bugs absolutely swarm our dogs, and that's the one thing that seems to work. I mist their fur, avoid their eyes, and hope for the best. They hate it, of course...but it is a little funny watching Hudson try to outrun the smell...he gives up after a few seconds. Sorry, evil of me I know. Nothing gentler has ever worked for them, or for me for that matter, so I figure we're all in it together. We only really need it a few times a summer. |
