New OES Puppy -- What a nipper!

Hello everyone! We have a 14 week old OES puppy named Trotter who we adore but he constantly nips at us and our 3 kids (9, 6 and 4). We have tried saying no bite, the bitter apple, the "ignorning him" reaction, giving him a chew toy, etc. but nothing works. He even nips after making outside and we give him praise. We give him tons of love, brush him constantly but need help with the nipping. :P

Any suggestions?????

The pet stores sell a small bone shaped ice pack that you can
freeze, it really helps with teething. Teething can be very
uncomfortable for them.

We also found when our pup was tired, he tended to nip more.
So give him plenty of time outs to sleep. (Away from family activity
but where you can observe him)

Continue all the other things you are doing as well,consistantly...

Good luck !
Exactly what I was thinking.....give him a toy, let him chew on ice cubes...and know that it WILL pass....just make sure he is ALWAYS supervised around your kids...especially the 4 year old!
Just know he isnt doing it to be agressive,it is in his breed to nip for hearding. It will go away, but yes it can be annoying.Do the toys, and just keep telling him NO!One day you will have a good non nipping dog on your hands :D
It can also help to yelp like a puppy, or say ouch, so that they learn it hurts. They normally learn bite inhibition with their mother and littermates, but sometimes pups miss out on this if they leave before 8 weeks or if it is a small litter.
Hi there, we are also in the same position you are!! Max is 13 weeks old, and nips constantly. I've also tried everything you have!! So at this point I'm just going to stay consistent, and try the frozen chew toy idea since that's the only thing I haven't tried!! Hopefully this phase will pass eventually. Good luck and post again to let us know how it's going
Thanks so much for the advice. I am off to the pet store to find the frozen bone for Trotter!!! I will keep everyone posted as to how it is working.
Try Petco,
the name of the product is Chilly Bone canvas dog toy.
If you get 2, you can keep one in the freezer and ready to go!
Odin is 8 weeks old and is the same way. He nips at my pants and clothes when I take him outside, and when I'm walking around him. He also nips sometimes when I hold him. He's the best mannered late at night when he knows it's time to sleep, and won't nip. I'll try the ice cube trick too, and maybe check out that toy.
The ice cubes worked great while Clyde was teething. Now that he's older, he thinks that ice cubes are super special treats. It was a win-win situation for him.
We got our OES when she was 6 months old (a rescue). She was always nipping at my 8 y/o backside. We turned things around and showed her that HE was the alpha, not her. He fed her, went out the door first, gave commands etc. Now 7 months later, she doesn't nip much  , only when my son and buddies run around the house (which really isn't her fault, they have been warned!!!). But that isn't aggresive, just excitement. Now, she will gum my wrist (and only mine) when she needs to be let out or her water bowl needs filling (or maybe a treat). Hang in there, it does get better!
Hi Trottermom,

Sounds like you are doing all of the right things. Please be consistant with you pup and gradually the nipping will phase out. Frank's 14 months now and although he doesn't nip he's stlll a little mouthy so it will take a long time. Please know that it's not aggression - it's puppy behavior and it will eventually pass.

Don't know where it PA you are but please see the posts in the Sheepdog Organization section by Maxmm who's organizing a sheepdog picnic just outside Philly, May 16th. Quite a few of us from the forum will be attending.
Thanks! But I'm not the organizer, just doing my part for promotion.

Chad (aka IluvmyOES) is organizing. I can however provide directions, have a list of hotels and some other vague info if you need it!

We would love to attend the OES event. We live approx. 25 minutes northwest of Philadelphia and are right off of the PA Turnpike and Route 476 (Blue Route). Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated!
