If your female is 26" at the shoulders (and you are saying she is that height at the middle of her back which should be lower than the shoulders) I would say your girl is a bit on the tall side. 65" isn't abnormal for a girl but it is for that height. My one male is 26" at the shoulders (as big as I like to see the males) & weighs 90+#. Breed standard says 22" & up for males, 21" & up for bitches. I would say the 49# is quite on the low side for your male even tho' he's on the low end of the height scale for males. |
While there is quite a bit of size variance in OES around the country and the world, in general I would say your female is larger than average, and your male may be a bit smaller than the average male. Seeing he's just a pup, you would need to know from his breeder if their lines mature fast or slow, to know where he's at right now. They should be fairly heavy boned, so a 26" dog (your female) at 65 pounds is either very underweight, or quite finely built. Your male sounds like he will be more correct (in general bone structure-weight) for the breed. For comparison - my male in my avatar is 23 1/2" at the withers (point of the shoulder, used for measuring height), and weighs 70-72 pounds and is very athletic and muscled. my female is 26" at the withers |
There is huge variation. My two purebred boys are now within three pounds of each other by weight. One is short and husky, the other as tall and lanky as can be (just muscle). Hudson's about 20 inches (if I'm being generous), and Rudy's about 28. Getting a crate for him to fly was tough! We just ordered one that fit a small horse. When they stand side by side Rudy is as long as one and a half Hudsons. They look hilarious together. Sounds like you have a small boy and a fairly big girl. It happens. |
Zeke is about 24 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 60 lbs. |
Your mal is only 8 months old. He will be filling in. Your female sounds a bit large. Imahve larger dogs. My male is 110 pounds and my female at just under 2 is 70 pounds. I wouldn't owrry about it. Your male at 8 months is still quite a baby. My male had a big growth spurt at about that age. So don't worry. As long as the vet thinks the weight is okay, no worries |
I know this is a little exaggerated, since Rudy is in the process of being shaved, and Hudson is in a coat that's growing out, but I just thought it showed their very different body types clearly. Our vet says Hudson could lose four or so pounds, but it's not urgent. He's okay as he is, he's just a stocky little dude. Rudy could go three or four more, tops. He's built like Gumby. He was a little on the thin side when he first came, but now he's just about where he should be. Right now they are within a handful of pounds of each other anyway. I don't know if this photo shows it well, either, but... In this one Hudson's fur is significantly shorter than Rudy's, but you can still see the size and body type differences. We were worried about Hudson being a pipsqueak. Our vet said that as long as his weight is good for his frame that's all that really matters. He'll always be a stocky little pipsqueak! (And we don't like to point it out to him, but his legs are about half the length of Rudy's...so we always have to lift that stocky bum of his onto/into things that Rudy can step right into (and over Hudson in the process too, some of the time) because he just can't reach anything!) |

Asterisk is taller than Wendel. She's 26 at the shoulder and a solid 75lbs. Wendel is 24 and is tipping the scales at 96lbs (he needs a diet.. and to stay out of the garbage can, grumble ). There are two other OES in the area and the size difference is astounding. Bella, a 5 year old OES female makes Asterisk and Wendel look real small. She's 108lbs and at least a few inches taller than Asterisk. Jazabelle is a 7 1/2 year old OES female, who MAYBE tips the scales at 45-50lbs and is a bit past my knees. I think Wendel is the closest to standard of all four, despite him being overweight |
Rudy and Hudson sound like Jack and MO. Jack is this the giraffe and MO was petite. At 112 lbs. Jack had to loose a few pounds because of his hips, MO was difficult to get to 60 lbs in her youth. Age is changing them. There is just a wide range in sizes for the breed. Breed standard is more limiting, but back-yard-breeders...or worse don't breed for form, just for money. Thus you get a wide range in size, health, etc. |
Ecco is 57lbs at 8mos. Her momma and poppa were on the large side. I expect her to get to a solid 80lbs at least. |
dreamer and duff are so different duff is stocky 80 and dreamer is only 95 but he is 31" one tall boy every think he looks like a great dane in sheepy clothes he was just a yr and he is a lot taller now |
At 13 months Kenzie stands 27" at the shoulder and weighs 74 lbs. His weight actually plateau'd for a while at 9 month and then started increasing again - it still is! Nik |
I love big dogs, but I especially appreciate the little sheepie, MO. She fits better: on the chair, couch, bed, car. Every morning I awake to find her stretched out up next to me, but nothing touching. Whereas Jack or Harry stretch and about push me off the bed. |
It's funny Susan you say that. You love big dogs. After only having Pyrs in our life, Frankie is small to us. Everybody see's him and says wow what a big dog. No not really. I say he's my delicate little fower. Sometimes I have to admit that the Pyrs thought they were lap dogs. Lisa and Frankie |
LOL We say that about Hudson all the time. He's the shortest and lightest sheepie we've ever had. The next "smallest" was 90 lbs (at a healthy weight)...while our stocky little Hudson is 75. Whenever people talk about Hudson and call him a big dog I look around for one. He's our "Little Smudge." We call him the teenysheepie. Rudy's tall and gazelle like, but he's so thin and gumbylike that he's only 73 pounds. The vet says it's a healthy weight, so no complaints, but although he's a tall boy, he's so thin I don't see him as a big dog either. He's an adolescent, so he may fill out over time. Or he may not. We've had much bigger boys...108 pounds (healthy weight for his frame) for example...but they're all sheepies so they're all delightful. |
My first male sheepdog was only 65 lbs. My second male sheepdog was a tall, lean, and muscular at 87 lbs. His brother was 125 lbs. My third male sheepdog is 9 months and is 68 lbs. He may fill out a little, but I think he's about finished growing. While I really loved the 87 lb sheepie, I can pick up the 65 & 68 lb. and I really like that in case of emergency. |
