eReaders

Apparently there is a price war going on with eReaders (Kindle, etc.) I do not buy books but I figure if the device goes cheap enough, I'll buy it. My public library has a huge collection of downloadable books; however, the Kindle and iPad are not supported. The Sony Reader and the Nook are. So I toddled to the Sony Reader website to read all about it. You have to download the book to your PC, then to your eReader? Is this right? If so, then it's like buying tunes from the iStore--a two-step process.

Is this how all eReaders work?

I know you can download straight to the Nook via wireless internet or 3G. I bought a Nook for my daughter, plugged some dollars on a gift card and tied it to the account, and she can download a book in an instant (literally). It's pretty cool!

She also uses the internet browser on it a lot.

I use the Kindle and iBook apps on my iPhone - they're also instant. I don't download to the computer first.
I have a Kindle. You have a choice, you can browse, purchase or download on the Kindle itself, it has its own connection. But I find it faster to cruise thru the Kindle offerings on my computer, purchase and then flip on the Kindle and VOILA! there it is.

I'm guessing my glasses prescription needs adjusting because I'm finding reading books w/ small print difficult again, but with the e-reader, just enlarge the size 8)
Then again it may be the books I'm reading......intellectual and maybe my brain is closing down. I kick myself because I paid $50 for a book only to find it later on the Kindle @ $13.
I went with the IPAD with the 3G. You don't have to activate the 3G if you don't want to and it has an E reader app. He can dowln load a book right to the i pad going through the i tunes store. You want to look which one has the most books so that you can get the selection you want. I think that the kindle has the largest collection of books,
I just use my ipod touch to read ebooks....
I'm glad to see an E-reader thread here! I'm currently comparison shopping for one, and would love to hear everyone's take on them! :D

I'm super excited about getting one. I held off for a long time, as I didn't feel that the selection was large enough (my reading tastes being a bit on the obscure side  ) or the technology quite there yet...but now I think its time. :excited:
Since there is an app for the readers on Ipad I would recommend that since you can also do web surfing and emails. I don't know that that is possible for the kindle and e reader.
I didn't contemplate the Sony or the iPad for my daughter, but the deciding factor for me between the Kindle and Nook was giftcards. She gets a lot of them from Barnes & Noble as gifts, and this way she can use them for her eReader. Otherwise, they were really neck and neck.

(Websurfing available on both.)
I haven't committed to purchasing one, but if I do, it will be the Nook or the Sony. I would get it so that I can download books from my public library, and the library vendor doesn't support Kindle. It appears that the Nook has wireless download, so I guess I'm leaning in that direction. Plus there is a Barnes & Noble across the street from work.....
I haven't heard of a library supporting a eReader. The publisher would want a piece of that action.

I find reading off a computer screen to be difficult at best. With the Kindle I'm just more comfortable.

You'll be surprised - our library system has supported electronic media for a few years now on the iPhone and on computers. I don't think that's any different than reading them on and eReader as far as a publisher is concerned, do you?:

I meant to mention another neat feature my daughter enjoys - you can loan books to others who have a Nook. So she and a couple of her friends share books that way too. I don't recall if you can do that on Kindle or not.
I don't know, I've never tried to share as none of my friends have one and screw up their face in disgust at the mere mention of eReaders 8O Silly purists.

If you download a book from the library, is there a time limit on it before the library fairies come and erase it? 888888888

Well, I just checked that out myself. There is a limit the book can be "checked out from the library." I was wondering how the publishers would allow it, they don't let you own the book as with Kindle, etc. Also Kindles and the iPad are not compatible.
I love my Kindle sooooooo much. I was messing around with the Nook and B&N the other day but I really don't care for the controls as much as I do the Kindle so I'll stand by my purchase. It's such a comfortable screen to read and without the bulk of a book, you can read laying all kinds of positions that aren't anywhere near as comfortable with a real book! I recently bought a book that wasn't released on Kindle the same day as the paper release date and I found myself really disliking having to (gasp!) flip pages.

Another great thing about the Kindle was when we were on vacation in Jamaica, you could use the wireless for free and download books for free-- no roaming or charges for using it out of the country.

I believe there's a certain number of times you can lend it or maybe it's a household thing? I know you can share though. I'm going to buy James one for Christmas whether he wants it or not because he's missing out on a lot of books and I really get down on him for bringing more books into the house because we're overflowing with them. It's most of the reason I wanted the Kindle in the first place.
I have had my Sony E-Reader (PRS-505) for 5 years now. I LOVE IT!!!!!!! My husband gave it to me because I was traveling to Ethiopia for three months at a time and I was hauling 10 to 15 books with me each trip (talk about heavy). When my husband got my E-Reader the Kindle had not come out yet. I don't care that it has no wi-fi connection, because in most places I travel to I wouldn't be able to use the feature anyway. I always travel with my laptop and at some point have accessibility to a broadband connection so I usually just download a number of books at a time. It is really very quick and easy to transfer them to either the Reader itself or an SD card. Right now I am using an 8 GB SD card and I have almost 300 books on it. If anyone out there has a Sony E-Reader I would love to trade SD cards. The battery life in my reader is amazing. I t usually lasts at least three weeks (and I read a lot every day).

I have stopped buying books for my E-Reader, because my library has such an extensive collection of e-books I can borrow for free. I love it because I don't have to go to the library and I can do it from anywhere in the world! I also don't have to remember to return a physical book. The book simply becomes unreadable after the borrowing period.

I also find my E-Reader is easier on my eyes.

I would highly recommend the Sony E-Reader to anyone, based on my experiences!

One word, KINDLE! I've had mine over a year. It has traveled over 80K miles in a briefcase, read on beachs, airplanes, hotel rooms, trains, parks, etc. While incased in the least expensive cover available it has been dropped, sat on, and run over by sheepdogs numerous times. I can purchase a book even if I'm away from my computer. This size and weight is perfect. I've never had a problem finding material I want to read. In fact my wish list grows daily.

OK, done, but I could go on.
LeAnne has the Nook, and she loves it. I totally have no clue on features of one vs the other - but I remember her saying the new Nook has droid technology, and that was a good thing to her.... ...again, I'm clueless!
^^^^^^^^^^
OMG now I feel the need to own a nook. Droid technology!! I can pretend I'm in Star Trek. 8) :D

Sadly I havent even seen nook's advertised here. I did see an advert for a kobo, do you guys have those?

I'm like you Laurel I've held off because the books I like werent easy to get but I'm starting to feel like I really NEED to own an ebook, especially since I got a new job and started to travel to work on the train 2 or 3 days per week.
Nook is the brand marketed by Barnes and Noble - one of the largest US booksellers chains.

I hadn't heard of a kobo - but I looked it up online and must be available here too.
Thanks Dawn, we dont have Barnes and Noble in Aus. I will have to get more organised and do some research re what's available here.
