This dog saves lives A six-year-old diabetic girl has her life saved four times a week by a dog which knows when she needs insulin. Rebecca Farrar's labrador- golden retriever cross Shirley, one of just eight dogs in the UK trained to be "hypo-alert", can smell when Rebecca's blood sugar gets dangerously low and licks Rebecca's hand to alert her. Shirley who sleeps faithfully by Rebecca's bed every night, will even fetch a sugar-level test- ing kit when needed. |

I wish we could train our dog to do this... We are using a very expensive mechanical sensor for this function and it doesn't work very well at all. Nitpick: When a diabetic's blood glucose is low (hypo-glycemic), they already have too much insulin acting in their body. They need glucose (juice or glucose tabs) and not more insulin. |
^^^^^^ True Ron, I just copied the article in and didnt really think about it. Moral of the story "dont rely on a journalist for your health care - you'll end up dead!" |
