A dog walker came by, with a baggie of poop, securely tied at the top. He lifted the lid to our can, put it in, and closed the can back up and continued on his way. It was completely a non issue for me, but my husband objected. (Not aloud to him, but we had quite the conversation.) I figure it's bagged, and on its way to the dump. Good job. That's where our dogs' poop gets put. He says it's inappropriate to use someone else's can in that way. I use the cans in public parks, and have been known to toss my bag of poop into a can waiting on the curb from time to time. Usually Hudson poops at the end of our driveway on our way out or within a house or two of our yard, so I just bag it, leave/toss it on my lawn, and get it and dispose of it in our can on the way back. Rudy still won't poop when leashed. He prefers to save it up and poop in the living room. Sigh. So, I'm curious. Am I horribly wrong? Or is my husband just weird? (On the poop issue please...globally those are huge questions.) |
|
Since it was wrapped, a nonissue with me. If it had been unwrapped, yeah I might have an issue. I remember years ago when garbage men picked up the cans, manually, they'd complain about dog poop if it wasn't wrapped. I don't blame them. Wrapped, they were slightly more forgiving, but when the crusher crushed the poop, they had to smell it. Now with mechanical pickup, wrapped, no big deal. Sounds like hubby is a bit territorial.....typical male. |
Not a problem for me since it was wrapped up. But we have people who don't pick up after their dogs. They like to take their dogs for a walk on the dirt road diagonal from us... only one guy has ever carried bags. The others are lazy nuisances... it's just piggish not to clean up after your own dog. "Your dog, your poop." I'd just be happy you won't be stepping in it when you take your dogs for a walk |
Funny you should bring this up now. As long as the poop is bagged and its going to the trash man anyway, I see no problem. However, I myself was walking my dog and picked up the poop. I double bagged it and on the way home a neighbor had his pail out with no lid so I dropped it in there. My husband had a big fit saying that was disgusting I did that and good thing the neighbor didn't see me...Must be a "man" thing |
I always debate this with myself when I walk my dogs on garbage day! There are cans right there, waiting to be picked up (I would never even consider it if the pickup had already been made) so do I carry the disgusting things with me, or do I drop them in someone else's trashcan?? My decision? If I'm near a neighbor I know I'll drop it in...if I don't know them, I continue on my way, with my gross bag. Looks like this was a good choice since apparently some folks would object! Here's another poo-bag etiquette question for you all: If I'm on a long walk, I often leave my (brightly colored) full bags by the side of the road/trail to be picked up on my way back. I always worry that this might bother people, since they have no way of knowing that I'm going to come back for them. What do you guys think? OK? Not OK? |
I'm not normally one to claim one thing is man thing or a woman thing but this is one of those things that does sure seem to bother men a heck of a lot more than women. James has made the same comments to me when I've added a bag to someone's trash that was going to be picked up in the morning. I assume it's an extension of men's ownership of their yards and all things associated with it. To me, it's all going to the dump tomorrow anyway so what difference does it make? It's not going to permanently damage the can or anything. |
If I may add my bags worth. As a GUY, I must take a little exception to the "Man" theory on this. I walk Bailee about 4 miles a day and during that time he will usually make "deposits" at least twice and on many occasions three times. I always bag it and have absolutely no hesitation to put it in any trash container. I won't walk up to someone's house to put the bag in but on trash days I have no problem what-so-ever as long as the container is streetside. I walk him around one of our schools and they have a hugh dumpster out in back which I use whenever we are in that area. What could anyone get upset about, it's bagged, it's garbage. |
Horray for Bob! One of the logical thinkers. Sorry to be a sexist calling it a male thing, but what is the deal with being so possessive of the rubbish? |
Even if my neighbors have the cans streetside, I take Oscar's doo-doo home with me. At our last house, someone dumped their full baggie into my EMPTY bin, as the garbage pick-up had already occurred. I was not pleased. Laurel, I do the same thing you do. If Oscar poops early in the walk, I will baggie it and leave it there, to get on my way back. It's in a bright pink bag, so it's very visible. In four years, I've never forgotten to retrieve it. There are a few folks in our neighborhood who never pick up after their dog, so if anyone wants to complain that Oscar's poop sits in a bag on the side of the road for 30 minutes, they will just have to get over it. I am constantly picking up after other dogs, and random coyote, so Oscar doesn't step in their poop. About once a week I find dog poop on the road in front of my house, which just makes me crazy. (Wish I could catch someone in the act. They would find it in their driveway.) I drive over it, it sticks in my tire treads, and it smells up my garage if I don't notice it. YUK! Laurie and Oscar |
I always bag and take home with me, unless in a park where there are doggy bins, or if there is a skip outside someones house and no one is watching I can just slip it in there! My biggest moan is in the countryside you see bags of poo in the hedges! whats the point of that? the bags arent going to disappear! |

Wish he worried as much about the inside of the house as he does the outside. |
If the bin is out on the street I put my dog's bagged poop in it. That's what bins are for. I dont even mind if someone else puts poop in my empty bin!!! I agree with Mrs J bins stink anyway and I'll be putting some poop in there within the next 12 hours as it is. I'm just glad its been picked up and bagged. There's still too many people around here who just leave it for my dogs to sniff or me to step in. I suspect its a mostly man thing. A while ago one of my neighbours was out on the street going nuts because someone put a bag of rubbish in his bin on pickup morning. He wasnt happy when I looked surprised and said well its a rubbish bin, the rubbish is bagged, its getting picked up in half an hour. He isnt that is was HIS bin and shouldnt have anyone else's rubbish in it. I take that last bit back. I just remembered, my neighbour (male) kindly offered his bin a couple of years ago. He saw me shoving rubbish in the top of our jam packed bin and said I could put extra rubbish in his bin any time. |

One night we walked down to a therapy visit and I left the bag so I could pick it up on the way home - we had an aggressive high intensity wind storm during our visit so when I went to retrieve the bag, it was gone! I imagine it was swept up to the next town in the high velocity wind storm and someone rec'd a terribly stinky gift. |
Seeing I live in the country, it's not everyday that I get to walk my dogs in town. Walking the trails, they have garbages in the 1st mile or so, but after getting out of the city limits, there are no more cans. I often leave the bagged poop on the edge of the trails and pick it up on the way back. In town, we use people's garbage cans if it garbage day and they are out at the curb. They are baggd and tied closed - no mess! We even have been known to choose our route based on which streets are having garbage day..... |
I always carry the bag and get rid of it at home and yeah it would kind of annoy me if someone else put their dogs poop in my bin.,... here's my reasoning... if that bag breaks or gets caught on something and makes a mess who has to clean it up? Not the person who dropped it in walking by.....Yeah garbage cans are gross anyway but if there was poop all over the inside of it I'd want to wash it out and don't think I should have to if it wasn't due to my own dogs LOL |
I look at it as an aspect of community support and respect. So many owners don't even pick up after their dogs AT ALL, so I am appreciative when anybody makes the effort. And if my bin is handy, by all means please feel free to use it. |
My hubby walks babs and syd together, syd is the dump king, guaranteed a bare minumum of two poops on a walk or even more Babs is a lady she waits till she is home, so out and about walking the kids YEP if it is bin day and syd the dumpster has gone the nearest bin he dumps what the dumpster has dropped in a tied poopie bag instead of continuing walking for K's and carrying a couple of bags of poop and two leads for two dogs. Thank gawd babs is not like her dumpster brother on walks Now if bins were not out he comes home with those full bags and disposes them in our bin waiting for rubbish collection, I would not mind if my bin was out on the curb on rubbish day and someone else did that provided it was in a tied poopie bag. Better then out and about and someone not picking it up and it ends up on your shoes Just love it when tready runners on with deep anti-slip grooves and some ******* you can fill in the blanks there, and you step in it as some ********* has not picked up their dogs turd and your left with scrapping out of the grooves on the soul of your runners!!!! |
You painted quite a picture with your words, Lisa! I have everyone go before we leave... Bumbles one that will "do it" on a walk but the others almost always wait until we're back home. Always have poo bags with me when we walk and take it home unless there's a public garbage can I can use... there usually is. I don't think I'd put it in someone's garbage bin but wouldn't mind if someone put it in mine if out by the road. |
If any of you are walking your dog past my house Monday morning and need to discard the bagged up mess, go for it! Honestly, I'd rather have someone use my garbage can to dispose of their bagged poo then just leave it in my yard... The WORST is finding it by stepping in it when you're mowing the lawn |
Maybe men object because we realize that there are trash pickers and in some areas trash separators at the transfer stations... Or not! |
Good thought Ron, but Im still going with the "Territoriality" theory . I hate to admit it, but I am very territorial myself, although only in certain areas. I HATE it when anyone touches my laptop computer!!!! I become absolutely homicidal if someone leaves trash in my art booth (this sometimes happens, because I use garbage bags as my sales bags, and people see the basket of black bags and assume its trash) I'm apt to viciously attack anyone who borrows something from my studio, and fails to return it to it proper place So...since men more often deal with the trash/trashcans, it could be that some of them feel a bit more possessive about them than women |
I never leave my tied up bag in somebody's trash can because Harry's poop smells Baaaaaaaaaad! I guess I am trying to be courteous in case they were not expecting that "lovely" odor when they lift the lid to put in more trash. In fact we do not put the bags inside our cans until trash day so as to not have to get that "whiff" every time we lift the lid when we take out trash. We place the bags alongside the cans so they can air out. I always feel sorry for our trashman but I guess it is no different than other people's poopy diapers. |
question...are they trash cans in an alley where several houses use a large can or are they personal cans? we have large cans in our alley and we do not hesitate to dump her poop bag in any of them...now that said, there are houses on ''islands'' that dont have an alley, so the cans are ''theirs''...we will dump the poop in those too... techincally, dont the cans actually belong to the city? panda is poop queen on every walk...i am not going to carry 2 or 3 bags of poo, in arizona, in the heat for 40 minutes...ick! now, that said, i have a seperate question....when panda poops, i am usually about 2 yards away (she likes privacy), by the time i get to her(which is seconds later)..there are already flies on it....how the heck to they get there so quickly? |
Of course this IS an issue. Why the heck would someone think they have the right to put their stinky bag of poop in your trash bin? Whether it had been picked up or not! They should P/U the poop and carry the bag to the nearest public trash can or take it home. If someone doesn't have a dog (or even if they do), they don't want you to stink up their trash can. For that matter, you shouldn't even be touching thier trash can; it may have something personal on top that they expect to be taken away - not viewed by a passerby. |
I tend to carry the bag home or find a public trash can. I do sometimes leave the bag on the curb and on the walk back pick it up...my neighbours all know this. I will not put it in someone elses trash can...mainly because I am shy about it. If a dog walker dropped a bag into the proper garbage can (we have a three can system here ugh) I'd be fine with it. Oh but a huge pet peeve....my SIL used to drop off her garbage bags at our house if she missed her garbage pickup day. This drove me nuts, I had to tell her not to do this. We sort our garbage, if it is not correctly sorted we get a sticker and a note from the city . I want to make sure any garbage that is going to the curb is in the right coloured bag or can. This city prides itself on being a 'green' city...so if there are 10 bags of garbage at my curb (6 being my SIL's) I'd be embarrassed. Silly I know. Funny thread though because I have thought about the disposal etiquette in the past. peg |

Dog walkers should let them potty at home before the walk or be willing to carry the bag to a public trash can or home. |
The idea of owning a dog and not picking up the dogs' feces is a disgrace. It is time to confront these arrogant people who believe they are above picking up their own dog's feces. Please share ideas, stories, and thoughts with us. http://poovenge.blogspot.com/ ?Poovenge? The act of peacefully seeking revenge against lazy, careless, arrogant, self loving, selfish, dog owners, who are not responsible enough to pick up their dogs feces. P.S Having someone responsible enough to put their dog poop in your garbage is better than them just leaving it lying around. I would much rather have their poop in my garbage than on my shoe! Kids cant even play in parks without fear of dog poop! |

Kids cant even play in parks without fear of dog poop! It is equally frustrating for those of us who are responsible dog owners who do pick up after our pets. I always carry lots of poop bags and if I see someone NOT picking up after their pet I chase them down, hand them a poop bag, and say 'oh you must have forgotten your poop bags, here, have one of mine for your dog that just pooped'. It always shames them a bit. I always hope that from then on they pick up. One can dream! |
We live in the country, so not much of an issue for us on a daily basis. Our daily walks are around the property, and yes, we do bag her poo rather than doing a periodic lawn cleanup. We keep a separate receptacle for her poo bags, and then add them to a full-sized trash bag on trash day. Our trash service requires everything be in large bags, so their collectors reach into our can and pull out the large bags individually. Little bags (poop, fast food, whatever) are left behind so we can bag for next time. For that reason, I would be pretty irked by someone just tossing it in on their way by. I was also raised with a very strict idea of "if it's not yours, don't touch it." We didn't cross a neighbor's lawn without permission, didn't let our play spill over into someone else's yard, didn't use their hose "just for a second," etc. Because of that, it wouldn't occur to me to use someone else's trash can - sitting on their property - as my own. When we're not home, we carry our poo bags with us until we find a public trash can to use. Having said all of that, I would rather someone put their poo bag in my trashcan than have them toss it in a bush (really? people do that?!?) or not pick up at all. (Does this thread need to be re-titled "The Tao of Poo"? ) |
I live in Chicago and our garbage cans are in the alley. I keep witnessing a neighbor---across the street, let her dog crap on other's neighbor's front lawns. I think this is disgusting--it's not even on the parkway. But--she will pick it up. What gets me is that she will walk OUT OF HER WAY---to my alley cans--to toss the bagged poop. At first I thought, well, at least it is picked up and bagged and now tossed away. But, this is not a single occurance, this is daily now--sometimes multiple times in a day. This is my garbage can and as I have to go throw my trash in there--I get the nice whiff of dog ####. I have young kids that I am also teaching to toss out the garbage and they can't stand the horrible smell. It's also getting hot out. She lives across the street...her cans aren't far away. So, this does annoy me--and I am a woman. |
I take the boys' poop bags, light them on fire, leave them on my neighbors' porches, ring the doorbell, and run. |
Nothing like good old "fire"works on the 4th |

To put it in any bins associated with a school or any other place children are near is just plain filthy! If I saw you do this I would tell the school. It depends on what people's bins are made of. Metal probably wouldn't absorb the smell as those heavy plastic ones do, but if you put it in my bin and I saw you, I would probably take it out and swing it down the street at you after taking aim at the back of your head! Some of us don't like our dogs sniffing around our bins trying to find strange smells that shouldn't be there. I won't even go into the parvo issue. They can carry it without suffering it themselves. You assume the owners of the bins also own dogs. Maybe they don't. Maybe they don't because they don't want to deal with dog poop or the after smell! As for leaving the bags at the side of the road to pick up on the way back, it's a bit vain to think you are so special that others don't mind looking at your filth until you are ready to pick it up. I would report you for littering. Keep your dog mess and fill up your own bin or give us your address and we can all sling ours onto your yard until we are ready to deal with it! This all may sound a bit harsh but there are those of us who go out of their way to keep our dogs healthy and our property clean. |
Did I miss the post about kids going dumpster diving????? You are very opinionated. Does it make you feel better hiding behind "guest" ?? Since you seem to know so much about everything, why don't you let us know who you are? |
My two cents, when hiking, put the bag in a somewhat "unseen" site and pick it up on the return. If you must, make a little business card that say's "We are coming back for this, be patient." In urban areas, since people are very territorial about "their" stuff, carry the bag home. Get a little washable pouch or something and put the sealed bag in the pouch leaving your hands free to tend the dog. If you encounter a public trash can, not a business dumpster, deposit the baggie there. Dumpster diving at "at one's risk." Broken glass and other items are far more hazardous than sealed-in-bag doggie poop. |
Its not just a guy thing! People throw untied bags of poop in my trash bins after the trash has been collected. NOT small bags either! LARGE dog poops! Those bins then go into my garage, and every time they are opened can you imagine the stench!!! So the alternative leaves me to clean out those stinky bags and where am I suppose to dispose of them?! Disgusting! |
