Groomers - The Good ...The Bad (pics)

The good: I cashed in that groupon I talked about today. $25 for anything and everything. I think they did a good job. They did what I asked, and I ask a lot. Yuki smells good and has to feel like a million bucks now that she knows mom won't be brushing her so much. Her body/joints just don't enjoy it anymore.

The bad: I also got Mequpak groomed to save me the time and while they do better than me... I think I can do something passable and the same. It was $160.

The additional bads: Another reason to try to find the time to do the grooming is... they must have put a love potion on Yuki because Mequpak could not control himself. The car ride was miserable. I used a paper towel roll to block Mequpak and he just used the paper towel roll to get his fix. Remember me mentioning he releases "something" whenever he gets EXTREMELY excited like this???? ALL over the backseat of the car, the paper towels, and my arm which tried blocking him. It's downright disgusting. D-I-S-G-U-S-T-I-N-G ...the boy wouldn't even eat when he got home because he was so consumed with getting Yuki. We had to cage him up and he's just now calming down at 7:40 pm!!!! By calming down, I mean we still can't put him in the same room but he's at least not whining really loud and able to sit still. That never happens when I groom Yuks, so I'm hoping they just put something very enticing on her.

It might be the shampoo they used. Everytime I bathe a dog José can't quit sniffing them & trying to mount them. It goes away after a couple of days. Thanks goodness Mariah is patient with him.
They look all clean, trimmed and fluffy!
Were they good to Yuks and the boy?

I hope the $160 bill wasn't a surprise - wow, that's steep! 8O
Must be some shampoo 8O .....Chewie isn't that bad when a female is actually in HEAT!
I thought $125 for a groom when my girls were in full coat was bad; $160? YIKES!!!
Your boy is de-sexed isnt he? If Yuki is so tempting to Mequpak and Mequpak is neutered then it would not be the perfumey thing on Yuki just make sure she is not on the verge of a UTI that Meq is picking up with her on an unusual then normal discharge or different scent coming from her.

Might be time for a urine sample to go off to the vets for Yuki just to check.

Grooming and scented sprays should not make any difference to how Mequpak is behaving towards Yuki, my tip an impending or even now a start of a UTI happening.
I think they may both have a UTI with that kind of behaviour to be honest....

If he is fixed maybe he has infection causing him to act that way to possibly get relief if he is itchy or sore down there? The grooming session may have further irritated things or possibly some clipped hairs got inside the sheath?
We had them checked the last time I posted about this and there's nothing. Vet just joked about him being an "animal" [male]. They both aren't licking at all. :(

And that is the normal price I pay if they are ever taken, so I do try to do it myself, but sometimes I just need a break. It was the same price when I took them in many of the cities and states we've lived or visited.
I just fed them and let them play with their toys and Mequpak behaved, so I'm guessing he was just very very very excited to see Yuki yesterday. We don't mind an occasional hippidy hop, but when he has one of these episodes ( a handful of times) ...it's literally like a wild beast who suddenly has unbelievable strength and has been in a cage all his life.
You keep your dogs looking wonderful!

If they hadn't found the missing testicle, I'd think he still had it... could he have had three?
I think it's just the excitement of coming back together and Yuki's bodacious new smell
from the shampoo that's getting him all excited.
17 tears if having OES groomed and I've never paid more than $90! I think they just made the total what they would have charged you for two anyway, no "coupon"!
I think it depends where you live, what condition the dog is in & what you have done. A fully coated OES here taken to a groomer to be bathed brushed out & trimmed up (assuming there were very few is any mats) would cost close to $200.00 to have done where I live. And I live in the midwest which is relatively cheap compared to living in other parts of the country. Puppy cuts & & shave downs with baths would be around $100 & up. Go to bigger metropolitan areas & I am sure the costs go up.
here in Atlanta its $125 per dog in full coat. I always try to de-mat them before dropping them off. But if the groomer has to work with extensive mats, its an extra $25 an hour. I though that was steep so called around, and found it was just about the same price all over the city.
I was shocked when we first got Yuki, but now I'm only shocked if I ONLY have to pay 150 or less.
I don't bring them into the groomers with matts. I always feel bad for them being brushed all day by people who don't care about them like me, soo I brush them out the day before. :(
I always make sure they're mat-free as well. I don't want one of those "oh, he was so matted we just had to shave him" moments. Saves us all bail money that way.

Given you already had him in a basic puppy cut and they were really only trimming him makes the $160 absurd. They weren't doing a full coat or show coat. Houston is not in any different cost of living area than we are - in fact my brother paid less per square foot at the same time we did for a comparable home. So it's not that - it's just a really over-priced groomer given what they had to work with and what they did!
We pay $60 Canadian for the full bath, brush, trim, nails cut, ears cleaned etc. Should I be budgeting for that to double when Mady grows up a bit? Or is there a huge difference between Canada and the U.S. in terms of grooming costs?
Nevermind...user or tech glitch and I posted on the wring thread. Carry on!
You know... I think it's also quality. When I used to get Asterisk groomed at Petsmart/Petco, I'd pay over $68 a time. Yeah, great deal... only... they would shave off every mat 8O or they wouldn't even attempt to brush out a mat.

I gave up and just began home grooming, but I agree with Mrs. J... it would be nice to get a break once and a while.
I just can't believe the cost of $160 but maybe I'm reading it wrong. Is that for both dogs or just one? If you didn't have the $25 coupon would the cost have been $185?!!! Our guys together are $130 at the most and that's even when they have winter coats.
I'm going to save my receipt next time. lol I'm actually surprised the rest of you don't experience the same prices. I remember in college before I had Yuki but had my maltese, the place I went to was $180 for a standard poodle, so since then... I expected to pay around that. I paid 45-65 for my maltese.

1st dog total cost and very normal to pay: 160
2nd: $25 total

they were done at different groomers. i only went to the 25 dollar one b/c of the coupon for first time customers only.

I just realized that I bought 2 groupons and not just one. I guess I forgot. So it looks like mequpak will be going before it expires july 25th. The fine print said first time customers only (and each dog counts as a new customer)

I pay the same price (120-180) at petco/petsmart in alaska, oklahoma and a million cities in texas, so no matter fancy or how janky the place ...the prices were always the same to me. So, I knew that was the going rate for what I asked. I only allow hand scissoring which will increase the price. They can use their clippers only on the belly/feet.
You saw some of the house prices in the area in which I live. Seems that we might have the cheapest groomers around :D We tried 3 different groomers with Annie who all have the same price. I'm just guessing but maybe there are more long haired dogs in our area so they're used to this type of grooming...or maybe your place does a better job.

It would be interesting to have a map in which we can enter grooming price by state. It would do an average if there are multiple entries per state and then plot it on a map. Hmmm...anyone have some free time?
Just last week I had my two go in for a summer cut. I had both of them shaved down to an inch. Told them right off the bat if they find a mat they can't deal with, don't shave it and leave it for me. I paid $130.00 for both. If they go in for just a bath and brush out I pay $110.00.

I have been to MANY different places and paid as low as $50.00 a dog, and thats what I get...a cheap haircut. The place I go to now charges a little more but they do a good job.
I think I posted about this on another thread--but I will chime in for Tennessee.

I am very fortunate to have a groomer who picks up my dogs and brings them back. She charges $65.00 per dog and I typically give her around $10 for picking them up and bringing them back (about a 5 mile round trip)--so the total for both is around $140. She does a great job and they love going with her. She will also 'dog-sit' for me when we need her to so that they don't go to a kennel.

I send them about every 4 weeks and brush in between. Occasionally if they are 3 inches or longer she will charge $75 because she spends a bit of extra time brushing them out before she bathes them.

She grooms as a second job and uses a friends grooming room that is in a home so she just works with her regular clients and grooms two days a week. She has been grooming my dogs for 6 years.

I don't know what the other going rates are around town because she is so dependable I haven't had the need to check it out. One of my biggest fears is that she will stop grooming!!

I know that to have my kitties (persian) groomed and trimmed is just as much as the dogs. They go to a regular grooming salon as my dog groomer doesn't do cats--I only have the cats done twice a year--once at the beginning of summer and once in December. That place doesn't groom dogs over 30 lbs.
I loooooove their cuts!!! Total muppet cuts :)

We just changed groomers and paid $160 for two shaves, and the dogs look stupid and uneven. So we're on the hunt again.

Stacy who do you use in BG? I'm thinking of taking them in the burbs to save on cost and find someone that does a good job/knows the breed.
wow i am definatly too cheep. though for the love of sheepies i do them cheep on purpose.
for a short clip its £35 for 3f clip its £40 hand scissored for £60 and full coated for £80

i cant believe the prices that you are all saying!
Heather, try Jeri Hoppe. She has OES and is a professional groomer., For some reason I think she's in Barrington ( I have no idea where that is :) ) but I've seen her at shows and she does a fabulous job.
I think those are normal prices... I have never taken mine to a groomer but I called around once after I had surgery to see what it would cost and it was minimum 100 per dog ONLY to bath and blow dry and ONLY if they were 100% mat free.

I converted from pound to US $:

35pounds = $52
80pounds = $119.30

So not so far off prices here. Where I am we pay $80 - $120, depending on the dog's coat, the clip and the person doing it.
But I still prefer to do it myself. :D
after all this discussion I stopped in at the groomers in town to talk shop. I have been doing Bella's baths and trims since I got her in Nov. She is in a puppy cut so not a real biggy. Only thing is I don't think I have her neck area shaped/trimmmed enough. They have been open for two years and have a few late nights and Sat. hours. They said their earliest open slot is Aug 23rd. 8O WOW. Is that common for groomers to be so booked up???? The price for a bath, brush out and trim with sissors and nails plus ears is $70 for a sheepie. Maybe that is why they are so booked up. They do another sheepie in the area and I was tempted to ask where he lives so that I can check out their work. I didn't. too chicken I guess. I guess Quigley has been going there since he is a yougester and he is now 3. How do you go about checking on a groomer??? I basically told them that I needed help in the shaping department since I think that once I get the shape right I can use that as a pattern for her regular trimming that I do....or does the neck hair grow any faster than the rest. I haven't really trimmed it much since her original shave down in Nov when I got her. Tons of question.....
Most pet groomers have no clue on shaping an OES to look like an OES. :(
You would be better off finding a person who shows OES in your area and having them help you. Especially if this is a skill you would like to learn and do yourself.
I have a couple personal friends that are groomers - and GOOD groomers - who readily admit to not knowing what the correct grooming for an OES would be, beyond basic trims and hygeine clips. And by correct I mean the shaping, not how to trim in general.
Madeline lives a few towns away from me. She runs the rescue branch in our area. I think that she breeds as well. Do any of the locals or regular posters know if that would be up her alley or too much of an imposition for me to ask her??? When she brought me Bella she recommended petco in a town 1/2 hour away from me. Maybe I should call them. I haven't seen anyone mention getting their sheepies trimmed at that kind of a place.
You could ask Madeline. Just be prepared to have to work with what time she has available. She's very involved with the 2010 national this year so I do know she's busy. I think what you are needing is guidance on how to "strip" the neck area. The hair doesn't necessarily grow faster or longer there it just grows THICKER there. The best way to learn is to have someone show you exactly how to stip the neck area from the underside.
that sounds like just what I need since I would like to do it all myself in the long run. I will drop her an email and see if she has any time to show me how to do that stripping and shaping that you mentioned.
my prices a are going up!
here in mexico i pay

200 pesos for each (less than 20 dollars)

and they come to my house pick them up and return my dogs the same day !!

and i thought it was expensive here !! 8O
