He practically knocks me down the stairs as he rushes to get past me every morning, jumping down the last 3 (and pretty much barreling into the wall...EVERY morning ) and he tries to get out the back door to go outside and play. And he COUNTERSURFS. Mr bad-hips himself who could barely get off the floor from his nap is now almost jumping ONTO the counters to get at food. I know overall these are good things, but I had gotten used to my sedentary pup. |

Maybe I missed something (or more likely, FORGOT something ) but what made the difference in Mr. Barns? Ya gotta love the new personality, though - so typically sheepie! Yay, Barney!! |
Barney is feeling full of spunk now and so sheepie. Amazing obviously just so much happier in himself after the itchys and all that was going on with him. Go sheepie barney. |
I'm glad he's feeling better but definitely know your pain. Mequpak is pretty calm down but when he has his excited moments (including the jumping down the last 3 and moving all the rugs on the floor as a result) ...I can't help but want to shoot myself. It's temporary but I guess if I think about it ...we've always had to dodge dogs since they want to be near or on us all the time (no matter the breed) |
Good for Barney! Feeling young again with pep in his step! Welcome back to 'sheepie-world'! |
And your point?? These are sheepdogs, not clumber spaniels. They all have the bounce and the younger, the more bounce. At eight Jack still bounces towards the kitchen (duh?) barking and "leaping" because that's where the food it and if he pleads his case, telling me how good he's been or how hungry......he'll get fed. Sheepies are very bouncy for the first few years. Best learn to love his dancing, etc. Good boy Barney. |
Horay for Barnie Just proof that there is really something to the caution that if your dogs is not acting himself, lethargic or "just not right" its a signal something is wrong...Glad you cured whatever ailed him! Just a thought though..if is just started thryoid medication and you think he is acting a bit too hyper, the dosage may need to be adjusted... |
Bailee is as active as any other Sheepie, but, we have trained him to "WAIT" at the top or bottom of stairs until we are up or down. Then the "Free" command lets him know it's OK to come along. This didn't take more than ONE day of training for him to learn. Remember, use "WAIT" not sit or stay since that command is more valuable in other situations. The "Wait" command is used only for stairs. He also sits and waits to leave the house or enter the house. |
I'm not complaining (well, a little!)...it's just been an adjustment that the dog we've had for 5 years is now a whole different guy! Chris--we took Barns to an allergist who gave us a million meds for him. First a 6 week course to clear up a yeast infection on his skin and then prednisone and thyroid meds. I don't think he's 'too hyper'...I think he's just normal now. He is pretty good about waiting at the top of the stairs until I say go (he doesn't want to go down without me anyways) but the second I say go, he GOES I guess my only real concern with all this are his hips. They're still bad, and he's falling a lot because he's running all over the place when before he'd walk or just not even bother. So he's racing to get places and turns a corner on the wood floors and his back end slips out from under him. I don't want him injuring himself on already-tentative hips. I'll have to take pictures of him to show how MUCH better he looks now. |
I am glad that Barney is feeling better. Is he still on the prednisone? I know that Oscar has an increased appetite, as well as restlessness from taking pred. That, and the thyroid meds, might explain the counter-surfing and increase in energy. Laurie and Oscar |
Haha! I feel your pain/joy |
