Val would be the resident expert on "gypsy trips" |
Yes, Val would be the expert! We have done it, not quite to the same extent though... Several years ago we "planned" a trip to the smoky Mountains. All the planning we did is take time off work (the kids had spring break time) and make the 1st night's reservation at a motel. I stopped at AAA and got maps and guidebooks, did some internet research and printed possible stops we thought might be fun. Then we packed and took off. We followed whatever route we felt like and stopped when we wanted. Used the cell phone to call and make a reservation for the coming night in the afternoons if we thought the town we would end up in would require one, but otherwise just stopped wherever. It was great trip! Now we have Garmins, so it would be even easier! Where are you thinking of going? We picked our destination by going to our big US wall map (antique, from a school) and making a reasonable length from home that we could drive in the time allowed. Then used a string like a compass and made a circle around home. We decided we wanted to go south, and Smoky Mountains got the vote! |
