Looking for Adult or older Pup OES

My family is looking for an adult OES to adopt. Even an older pup whose already housebroken would be fine...we just don't have any experience with puppies and housebreaking. We are working with the rescues in our area-we live in NJ and are working with NJ rescue and NEOESR. We haven't had any luck with rescue yet because we have a 6 year old son, so we need a dog that has a proven history with kids. We have experience with OES, our beloved rescue OES Alfie passed away last summer when he was almost 15. If anyone knows of a breeder anywhere near NJ with an adult that they are looking to place, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Meanwhile, we'll just try to be patient until a rescue dog finally comes through.

If you don't mind travelling, I was informed a couple of days ago about a 2 year old male that was seized from a neglectful situation in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. His name is Shaggy, apprently he is a big sook, wonderful with people, dogs and cats. He was taken from a framer that has kept him in a chicken coop all his life... he needs a bit of training so I am told but is super sweet.

He is at the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia SPCA. His name is Shaggy.... Nova Scotia is beautiful this time of year, that would be a nice road trip
ooooooh :( Poor baby boy.
I hope he finds a great home.

I'm campaigning hard to get this boy a good home...
Thank you, Brenda. Now I'm all teary eyed.

:ghug:

I was angry when I heard how he existed... this breed wilts without people.
Are there any pictures of him?
Shaggy sounds like a sweet dog who certainly deserves a whole lot better. I checked out google maps and Nova Scotia is over a 14 hour drive from NJ, one way. While we are willing to drive a few hours, I think this would be too much for us. I appreciate you giving me the heads up about him, and I hope he finds a great home soon.
have you sent an email to Madeline?? She runs the NY division of NEOESR. When I was looking for my rescue in Oct. I sent her and email and we talked. A few days later she sent a message saying that she was going to pick up two. They were never even listed and since I had made contact a week or so before she called me immediately. It would be a shorter drive and I think that direct contact with those in charge is helpful. A little luck goes a long way as well. I think she also does some breeding so she may have additional contacts beyond the rescue. Good luck :D

Oh, my. He's beautiful!

Wondering if you listed him under "Rescuing a Sheepdog"...
some people may read OES.org posts but never interact.

He looks very sweet!
I have Madeline's e-mail if you need it.
I have already contacted Madeline and she has us on her list. We are also working with Grannie Annie and with Shelia in NJ. I know that I just have to be patient for a rescue that is known to be good with kids, but sometimes it gets hard to wait. You sure did get lucky with your timing!
Maybe we could arrange a transport caravan for Shaggy. I'd be willing to meet halfway between where he is and where I am in Maine and take him south as far as Boston. . .
A friend of mine went to meet Shaggy yesterday, he's being adopted by another family, apparently there was lots of interest in Shaggy... so YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH for him.
Oh good! That's great news. :D
someone just posted about a sheepie in UT that might work. 3 years old. Many people have mentioned flying dogs and I have done that once years ago. It worked out well. Pic and info are mentioned in the rescue section here.
I saw the pooch from Utah and was thinking the same thing. Last time I discussed with my husband, he really wanted to meet the dog first, but I'll check with him again. At some point he might just need to bend the rules a little!

I'm glad to hear that Shaggy found a home so quickly.
maybe they could shoot some videos showing him walking, with others dogs and kids. Madeline matched Bella and me together and that was just by her talking with me and knowing what I was looking for and her meeting Bella. It has worked out great.
My husband gave me the green light, so I emailed the owner. I also tried to call, but the voicemail on the phone number was full, whether or not it is full of messages regarding the dog is the big question. I'll let you know if I hear back. The video suggestion is a good one. If the dog was from a rescue, I certainly wouldn't have a doubt about not meeting him, I know the rescues are so good at matchmaking.
Just sharing this so you can ask good questions if your rescue OES will come from a long distance.

The dog needs to actually be "in" a rescue foster home for a while... maybe even a few months... for the rescue to get a good idea of the temperament of the dog and any limits or quirks it may have. It can take months to really understand a dog. Less time is needed if the surrendering family provided a truthful disclosure and the dog is easy going. Unfortunately, I've heard about people that have been less than truthful about their dogs.

Check into the fees to fly a dog... 5 years ago it was $300 for the crate and airplane trip from PA to MI for Panda who was 60 pounds. There was no adoption fee because she was a special needs dog but we did ask to reimburse the flight/crate fee. Also need to be sure there's a safety net at your end in case the dog just isn't right for you. This is when it's good for rescues to have national contacts or good working relationships with other OES rescues in the state. You just don't want to be forced to keep a dog that isn't a match for you or pay hundreds of dollars to get him/her back to rescue (good rescue contracts require a dog be returned to rescue if you can't keep him/her for any reason).

Panda flew to me at 11 months of age... a very happy, loving and friendly dog. I hope you find a wonderful match for your family.
