I just read that article. I was very pleased with it. Alot of times I feel Bark is leaning towards pushing to adopt shelter mixed breeds & spotlighting mixed breeds in other ways. This was one of the articles I was pleased enough with that I am writing to the editor to express my pleasure in how reputable breeders of purebred dogs were brought to the forefront. |
Cool, I usually buy it or read it at the vet's office so I'll make sure not to miss this month's issue. Thanks for posting about it! |

Hey, what month is actually on the issue? I went to the newsstand to get it yesterday and I couldn't find the article. I think the one I looked at was June-August. |

On the spine, mine says "summer". On page 2 it says June-August 2010. Article is on page 40 & it is titled Both Ends of the Leash,Well Bred A three pronged approach to keeping dogs out of shelters. There is a pictuere of a white dog with a piece of watermelon at it's front feet, standing, on the front cover. |
Darn it, I must've not read the subtitle because I remember the both ends of the leash part. Back to the book store! |
I think it's this one... I saw it at the vet's office. http://www.thebark.com/sites/default/fi ... x190_2.jpg I glanced at the cover and I thought it said "Otter Hounds" It says "Outward Hounds". |

It's a good article. I wonder how much the shelter euthanasia numbers have changed since 1995. Foolish people continue to put any two dogs together to breed simply because they can or didn't do enough to keep them apart. I don't see all BYBs as horrible or irresponsible... most should learn more before breeding their dog and be responsible for every dog they produce. What bothers me is that OFA and CERF seems to be becoming a marketing tool for some bybs in order to sell their dogs at a higher price. Just because a breeder has OFAed their two breeding dog's hips and CERFed their eyes doesn't mean their dogs should be bred. The flip side, as this article mentions, is that just because a dog has its championship or titles doesn't mean it should be bred either. |
