We have a neighbor (above us on the mountain, directly behind our property) who has bees, geese and chickens. I walk past this house on my dog-walk every single morning. Yesterday, I was reading about a scary series of bear attacks and close encounters in my town (Eagle River) and was shocked to realize that one of them took place at this neighbor's house! My neighbor had to shoot the bear No people were hurt, but most of his chickens had been killed. A second bear was also shot (and killed) in a separate incident the same day, a few miles up the road. The bear had charged a woman, and her husband shot it. This happened at the couples house, but I don't know what the circumstances were. I'm usually ready for my morning walk with Abby and Bert by this time but I'm really hesitant now! |

How are you with a rifle? Early summer males are being kicked out by Mom so more clueless males about the forest. I don't blame you for being hesitant......or worse. I am for you three's safety. |

I know...very un-Alaskan of me Yeah...I'm sure that's exactly whats going on (young dumb, newly dumped off boy bears) Today's looking like a good day to maybe call a friend and go into town the park instead of my usual walk! |
Be careful! |

Good idea, I'd be way to scared to have to use a gun. Maybe the walk in town should be a daily event till all those new bachelor boys get the idea to stay away. |

just curious, are we talking about grizzly bears? |
Guest wrote: just curious, are we talking about grizzly bears? Our area (we are right on the edge of the Chugach State Park) has a lot of both grizzlies and black bears. The incident at my neighbor's house was a black bear, the charging bear a few miles away was a Grizz, and we had yet another incident a few days later (this time a mauling...thankfully non-fatal) that was another Grizzly. Got Sheep: I do take pepper spray on my walks |
