GILLIGAN

has anyone heard how Gilligan made out with his biopsy???? I have been thinking about him and his savior all day hoping that things went well. Results are probably not back but I was hoping to hear how he is recovering from the procedure.

There is info at the end of this thread.
Ron, that linked thread has FlashPlayer in it which causes my computer to shut down (stupid work computer). Can you briefly update Gilligan's status here? Thanks.
Sure! It says that the biopsy procedure went well, but biopsy info won't be available for a few days, and Marianne will keep us posted.
I also posted a photo of him attending High School and a brief update in the Photo forum.
Thank you for asking about him!

What a GREAT picture!
I finally have time at home with a working computer - ahhhh.
Kaj is staying with Gilligan this evening and his new friend "Precious" another SPCA foster cat. They touched noses through the outdoor cat room but not sure if they'll be fast friends. After they touched noses they kinda realized "Hey! You're a cat!", "Hey, you're a dog!". It was the first time I heard Gilligan bark. :D

Now for the update on what was discussed at the vet office that day:
Overall he responded well to the full sedation and they were able to get a good sample of the mass in his mouth. Results will not be in until Monday, however.

I'm going to be honest with all of you so no one has false hopes but at the same time...don't give up hope! He still has a chance as even the vet said you can never tell 100%...that was her words after his biopsy. We still won't know what we're dealing with until Monday.

Originally Gilligan was supposed to have mild sedation for his X-Rays and to take a sample of the mass in this mouth.

The mass was so hard - the vet was unable to take a sample of it as she had to use a tool which usually is used for bone biopsies. She was also able to take better X-Rays of his jaw. She provided me with a CD of the X-rays to pass along to anyone but I don't know how to send it along as the file is very large. Kaj will see if he can make it smaller somehow.

What she hadn't seen with the visual exam - the first time she met him was the mass was on the lower portion of his mouth (near his molars) but it went through the bone to the other side of his mouth. This is something that was not apparent until he was sedated and the reason she had to use that particular tool.

She took numerous x-rays and several biopsies which she did not charge for. However, the extra sedation was added to the cost as Gilligan would have been uncomfortable with the mild sedation during the biopsy. This was due to the hardness of the mass.

His hips are bad but his knees are good.

His heart is sound.

His lungs are clear

His ears are clean.

His eyes are clear and bright.

The aspiration of his numerous lumps/warts showed no signs of anything wrong.

He has a great appetite, drinks well and has no troubles going to the bathroom. His stool is normal. He bathroom manners are awesome, as even still the effects of sedation ( when I brought him with me to my evening shift at work) - he arose and "asked" to go to the washroom - even though he had never been in that place before.

That %$#%^ mass is perplexing as she admitted she hasn't seen anything quite like it...it's an aggressive one but whether is cancer or fibrous - we won't know until the biopsy results.

I have full confidence in Dr. Armstrong as I've been bringing my animals to her for 22 years. Ray and Ann as well as another OES representative have expressed the same opinion after speaking with her on the phone - they are impressed with her. Dr. Armstrong was was of the vets that had treated one of my previous sheepies - Shaggy, who had Immune Dificiency Thromboycytopia (sp?) which very few dogs walk away from. Shaggy was diagnosed at 8 and lived to 15 1/2. She has also treated Merlin and Panda over the years.

There's a famous painting of OES that hangs behind the counter at that clinic which made me realize I had the right vet when I first walked in the office with Big Dog (another of my OES) aprox 22 years ago.

In the meantime - He has caused all to fall in love with him that has come into contact with him. My neighbors, the students at school, the SPCA staff, The vet staff....all said "this boy is so gentle and lovable. A lot of people have offered to "dogsit" him while I'm at school so he will constantly be with people that care about him.

Again, thank you so much to all the OES group who has cared for this boy too - You did make a difference and gave him that chance he needed. We can only hope for the best on Monday.

maybe it was so hard because it is densly fibrotic. It makes me think that the overlying bone was intact since she had to use a needle meant for bone biospies. :crossed: :crossed: that that is the case. It is great that everyone is coming together for Gilliagan.
:crossed: Keeping everything crossed over here.
Yipiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Great news it's not cancer!!!!!! It's a slow growing fibrous mass and although it has grown into the bone in his lower jaw - this means he won't be candidate for further surgery. It would mean removing a sizable portion of his jaw leaving him with eating and drooling problems. The mass is slow growing although was invasive he exhibits no signs of it bothering him at this time.

I wrote more on "it's not cancer" post.

Thank you all...you gave him the chance to possible have a few good years!
