She may have just been joking about the fact that you either trim or tie back Khloe's bangs Or...unfortunately she may have been referring to one of the silly old-wives tales that do exist, about sheepdog eyes needing to stay covered, to "protect" them from the sun Ive occasionally had people approach me, and in all seriousness, scold me for trimming my dogs bangs because ;"It will make them go blind", or even :because sheepdogs "don't have eyelids"( ) |
I think the groomer is nuts. Of course she's been exposed to light! Like you live in a cave?? There is an old wives tale that sheepdog hair protected their eyes from the light, but it's so untrue. They have normal eyes, just like any other dog, hairy or not. Sunlight does no damage (ok, if you stare at it, or something stupid like that!), just like us being out in the sun. Our dogs are special , but there's nothing different about their eyes, just regular dog eyes. |

I sure hope that groomer was kidding If not, run the other way! The next thing they'll be telling you is they are going to die from heat stroke if you don't clip them down or pull all thier undercoat out! Their eyes have to be exposed so they can see! |
The groomer was not kidding. She's just another misinformed indiot. Next time I hear that I'm very unladylike saying, "BS" except I've using the full words. I'm tired of it and the Westminister line, "They can see through the hair, they are far sighted." |
Though it's obvious that the groomer is misinformed, I really wonder what the heck she even meant. I don't even know what it would look like for "eyes to be exposed to light." People come up with the craziest stuff. |
Does Khloe have blue eyes, by the way? A lot of (misinformed) people also think that means a dog is blind. I get this comment in regards to Eggbert all the time, since he has one blue and one brown. |

I know you're tired of hearing about the myths, but the groomer may never have been properly informed.Sometimes we just have to sigh and repeat ourselves ad nauseum. One of the reasons having so many great members hanging around our site is so important -- one person doesn't have to type the same answer over and over; nor do we have to say "Please search the site before asking a question" to people which can be taken as rude (After all, it's the first time THEY have thought of or asked that question). When I'm asked a question I've answered a thousand times, I try to answer it with the same enthusiasm I had the first time I was ever asked. Life is a performance! "Yes! He DOES have one blue eye and one brown eye! Most people don't notice that! No, he's not blind. Yes, he was born that way. Well, the blue eye is called a 'wall-eye' and an Old English Sheepdog can have two brown eyes, one wall-eye or two wall-eyes, in which case they are called a double wall-eye! No, I don't know where the term wall-eye came from, there are several theories." and "His name is Mulligan! He is a rescue dog! He's 7 years old, we've had him for 5 years. We rescued him through NEOESR, which is based in Lincoln, MA. " and "Well, they are very high maintenance dogs. We keep him in a very short cut most of the year. It requires about 1 hour of additional grooming per week for every inch of hair, and a show dog has about 12 inches of hair! Can you imagine brushing your dog for a whole day every week?" |

This is a good one! I'll have to remember that the next time I am asked how long it takes me to brush my dog. And right now I have 2 of them in coat! No wonder I don't get anything else done after working all day! |
No, I really don't think she was joking! She said it very seriously. I figured she was misinformed but wanted to ask here. Khloe has 2 dark brown eyes. I didn't want a confrontation or to seem like a know it all so I think that's why I avoided the question. I did a ton of research before getting our oes so I knew better than to take what she said to heart. My girl sees just fine even though we come out of our cave every once in a while. |
Oh, I know Ron........another is "What happened to his tail?" Oh, they are like antlers, they fall off once a year and grow back. |

That's definitely a pair of super power eyes if I ever saw them. Was Abby exposed to cryptonite?? |
ROTFLMAO!!!! Having studied both zoology and human anatomy I just have to say "what was she thinking!!!" Our vision DEPENDS on our eyes being exposed to light. Ever tried seeing in a completely pitch black room. You need one of these. Whilst dogs do have better vision than humans at low light levels; they have more rods (light sensitive cells) in their retinas than humans; they categorically cannot see in the pitch black. They are not bats or dolphins with sonar for Pete's sake!!! They do have super-powered gimmie-whatever-I-want puppy dog eyes however. |

Dayam. I'm going to memorise that! Ron, while I find it easy to be repetitive with curious people who are polite, those who are rude or aggressive get the BS comment from me too. Seems like my halo slips while yours is firmly glued in place |
I'm working on a page that will hopefully help show new OES pet owners the importance of keeping hair out of their dog's field of vision- http://untilyoufindme.com/Old-English-S ... pknots.htm It's just in the works and not linked up yet but if anyone has some topknot picture styles that you've taken and would be willing to share to help educate, we would really appreciate it. |
For me, the type of response I give depends on the attitude of the person. I don't get annoyed at all if someone is asking me "Does the blue eye mean he's blind on that side?"...But, I do get snippy with the ones who think they are going to get to scold or lecture me : "Oh dear, you've clipped back the hair around their eyes! Don't you realize that will make them BLIND?!" Actually, both people get largely the same words from me in response (very close to your version Ron ), but the tone may vary a bit |
I cannot wait to see the posts on top knots and keeping the hair out of the eyes. I for one love the look of the top knot on a sheepies head. I cannot wait until Khloe's hair is long enough to do that. I just hope she doesn't mind having it done. After 3 sons she is the little girl that I didn't have!!!! |
Top Knot styles Single top knot tied with a towelling band Braid Slide clips Twin peaks No Top knot (Who' there? ) With your little one start with one tie above each eye till the hair gets longer then you can progress to a single top knot. I have all human boys too, so a lot of fun with the sheepie girls and the Fou Fous, lots of pink for them |
Thank you so much! What great pictures!!! I cannot wait to try some of these styles. |
before Bella's hair was long enough for the two over each eye I added a third on just between to hold the hair in the middle. I have seen a few pics with the three ponytail method as well so I know I am not alone. She definitely did not like the the three "horns" but we have finally graduated on to a single knot |
Where can I find the best hair ties that will stay put? |
krhodeoes wrote: Where can I find the best hair ties that will stay put? I got the little girl black rubber bands from Walmart (thanks for the tip Mrs. J!) So far, none has broken and I have re-used a few. For 500 count, they cost all over 3 dollars |
Mine don't have the glorious long hair that Lisa's babies have but Panda can still have little pigtails/pompoms held up with little rubber bands and butterfly hair thingies Bumble's got some little orange airplanes and blue lambies... |
6Girls wrote: Gorgeous love her Pom Poms Now want to see bumbles with his Blue Lambies in my hubby would freak if I did that to syd, even though syd is a metro-sexual. Stop giving me ideas with boy dogs Hubby is happy at least he has a blue lead to walk the boy after hot pink stuff with the girls. |

I'm growing Chewie's out, so his piggys are about the same length as Panda's. BUT I was showing today, so it was basic black ponies in today. Nothing too exciting.... |
I was at a show one time(all breed) I was not so sheepie savy at the time (not that I am a pro now) One OES was being shown and the people in front of me asked somebody about the Hair in front of the eyes... The other observer said "Oh, they can see through it" Then I wondered what they thought when the dog came out of the ring and the handler pinned his hair up? I have to throw in that was an awesome dog and I am thankful to have met Cruiser and his parents! This was my lame attempt to grow a dog out... Thank goodness he went to his new home before I totally emabarassed him! |
Holy Crap Did I give him horns Who would believe that is a brother to those gorgeous Dunne Dogs???? He does look better now |
Ooooh... that's their brudda?? I love C's hairdo Whether they're horns or pompoms depends on the dog I know his are pompoms! I uploaded a pic earlier but it's not approved yet... I don't have one with his blue lambies but here are the orange airplanes. http://oesusa.com/Bumbie-Airplanes.jpg Been tempted to make some using metal nuts (as in nuts and bolts) and washers... our men might think it's a more masculine look |
Phooey... the "edit" button disappeared. Orange airplanes... |

my begging, big brown eyes definitely belong to Simon...he has it down pat! |
Awwwwww Simon just stole my heart... I would give him cookies |
Oh my god! Dawn, how on earth do you do anything besides cater to this dogs every whim??? Im thousands of miles away, and yet the compulsion to fetch Simon a biscuit, or a steak, or a flame-thrower, or whatever else he wants is overwhelming!! |

Im thousands of miles away, and yet the compulsion to fetch Simon a biscuit, or a steak, or a flame-thrower, or whatever else he wants is overwhelming!! He is pretty much the moochiest dog! And most of the time it's just a pet and hug he wants - he isn't a food oriented dog. (as you can see - he is naturally slim, an abnormal basset trait!) He is always competing with Chewie to see who can get closer to me - my 2 velcro boys! |
Bassets do know how to use the eyes for their benefit. Our Tripper is a slender basset also unlike the other two we had. He only eats his supper in one setting because he's terribly afraid Butch is going to get it. |
Jaci love his areoplanes (Geez stop giving me ideas!!!! ) Wait till hubby sees what syd will be wearing as a fou fou soon |
