We have an 8 year old male OES and about 2 years ago he started being a bit funny about walking with my girlfriend on her own but would be fine if we both went. It then started to get worse where he would refuse to walk with both of us. We decided to get a behavioural therapist to come and see him and she gave us a few pointers which we have followed and to some extent it worked a bit but he has never been perfect since (i.e. he still won't go on certain walks/to certain places and still wouldn't walk a lot of the time if just one of us tried to walk him). It now seems to be getting worse again and we don't know what else to try. It seems quite strange behaviour; there is no pattern to it. Sometimes he will get out of the car and walk fine, then others he will get out of the car and just stand there. He has never been bitten, been mis-treated or been in a fight. There is no pattern to it at all, as an example this morning we were walking him on the walk that he has been fine with the last couple of weeks, we were walking fine and then went to cross the road and he just stopped, we then decided not to cross as he was just standing there and then he carried on walking fine until a bit further up the walk where he just decided to stop and then we had to turn back. Nothing has ever happened on this walk, in fact the last time we took him on it was yesterday and he had a lovely walk. We have tried persuading him with biscuits/treats but he will just stand there, he may go and get the treat but then he will go back to where he was. We have tried waiting with him but he will just stand there and not move. Giving him a little push used to work and he would walk off ok but this now doesn't work either. We have tried things like DAP collars/sprays, anxiety oils etc but they don't seem to work. Has anybody got any help/advice because we are worried it is going to get to the stage where he won't walk at all. Thanks, Dan |

has your Vet checked him over?? this would be my first step! |
Hello Yes he has been checked over no physical problems at all! I am at my wits end i dont know what to do, he is too big to lift lol |
Do you think it may be heat related? Is he walking on warm surfaces? Have you tried walking him on different surfaces? Is there a difference when walking on grass or sidewalk? Just some thoughts to consider |
Our 3 year old Oliver does this sometimes. Everything is perfectly normal and Oliver just stops...like he just doesn't want to walk. No issues with him either. Honestly, I think he gets bored with the same walks we do every-single-night. And know what...I bet some nights he doesn't feel like walking. I don't feel like running every night, so why should I expect him to go walking every night? So, now we change the walk up every now and then. Sometimes we plan on meeting one of his doggie friends somewhere along the way to walk with us. Sometimes we go to a new place with new smells, new people. And sometimes we just play in the back yard. |
