I got a refund check from the government and Notice 54

This was the first year I ever had to pay taxes (under $200)--I've always gotten a refund. I filed my taxes in February and yesterday got a check for exactly $400, along with Notice 54. Notice 54 says the amount of the enclosed refund is different from the amount shown on my return. And within the next week I will receive a letter that explains why the amount of the check is different.

Needless to say, I'm not cashing that puppy until I get the explanation. Has this happened to anyone else?

Sounds like your stimulus payment to me, but of course I can't be sure.
Did you get a stimulus check?

I got a stimulus check but that was last year I think. I poked around on the Web and this has something to do with Schedule M, "Making Work Pay." I'll find out for sure when I get the official letter.
