It looks like there are three... wondering if the third might have just been out of view for a bit. Now you've got me watching this again! |
OH YES... I see him now. Sorry for the learning to fly away alarm. He must have been behind one or positioned just so that I didn't see him. |
Oh - I was worried! I have been away all weekend with the dog show and grad party - and I hadn't checked in I thought of it earlier today, but then I had computer issues and didn't get back. (Thank goodness for BIL who can save me and my computers!!!) |
It would be neat if they had another camera positioned to capture their first flight |
6Girls wrote: It would be neat if they had another camera positioned to capture their first flight They record all the video - so I bet the day they fly, it will be in the archived videos - the link is on the 1st page. But yes, another camera would be great. |
hmmm, and right now I only see 2 of them! |
ALL present - a parent flew in w/ a fish and al 3 mobbed her/him w/ a feeding frenzy! |
OMG... while I was watching one of them started flap flap flapping his wings and lifted right up off the nest-- then landed back down. They are getting restless. Soon I bet it will be time to stretch those wings and fly. |
Ooooh... you both saw some wonderful things today! |
My research says that they will not fly out on their own--Mom will actually push them out of the nest with Dad flying above to 'rescue' if they don't fly before they hit the ground. My understanding is that eagles 'mount' the wind like we would 'mount a horse'--so they do not learn to fly like other birds. Don't know if this is accurate but am anxious to watch this process. If any of you are interested in the 'notes' that I put together for a class--you can PM me with your email address and I will send them to you. |
Sounds cool! Do you have any data for multiple eaglets? The hatch dates are pretty spread out - the 1st one was Easter Day, the 2nd a few days later, and the last was (I think) a full week after the 2nd one. Or pretty close to a week. You can see the difference in the feathers, the younger one still has more down. I would think 1/day would be enough for the parents! |
Yes--everything I have read says that it is VERY unusual for the eagles to raise more than two eaglets at t time-(I have not found anything that says what they do to prevent that--I am understanding that most times only two survive or only two hatch. It is not unusual at all for there to be a day to a week between the hatches. I have found some info that states that the rate of growth will be obvious for about a year then they all catch up and the size is determined by gender. Female eagles are larger than male eagles (that one surprised me). What I found said that the difference is due to when they 'start eating'- so the one that is a week older will be bigger until they reach about a year old. |
WOW. Interesting!! this is soo cool. I do hope we don't all miss when they get pushed out of the nest! It would be neat to see. |
Yay! I got to see one flapping it's wings and one of the parents brought back a fish today. It is so interesting. I shared the link with my vet... she worked with a raptor rehabilitation center downstate. This site has some interesting eagle info- http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle4.html |
