As far as I can tell, this is a normal response to what Murphy thinks is another dog - he's communicating with them, joining in the fun Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas at deterring this? He also howls when the smoke detector goes off in the house (me making dinner ). At least I know if the house catches fire, we'll have him yowling to wake us up too Anyone else experienced this with their sheepie? Lisa |

Check this out (from another member) We love this one!! When I put it on Baloo howls with them!! |
Wendel howls. At first, I didn't think he made noise at all, he was always so quiet. Then we put on this collection of short films by David Lynch. The first short is called Six Sick Men, where a siren plays for over two minutes. Imagine my surprize when Wendel started to howl Prior to this he never made a peep! |
Yes, Jack joins Harry in a jolly great howl fest. Once in awhile MO will join in. Glacier and her bass baritone voice would also, but little or no hearing now, no use. |
All my dogs howl If you have met Guinness he sings on cue |
They are so cute howling! The ears flapping back just cracks me up. Ru has never howled, but I would definitely want to put a stop to it if he did, as we live in a built-up area and the neighbours would go insane! |
I've always heard they howled at a siren because the pitch of the siren hit a nerve in their hearing. Don't know if that is true although I've heard some of mine in the past howl at sirens. What I always thought was funny was when my son (who had 2 OES at the time) visited, all 5 of them would start to howl in the morning, right when they thought it was time to get up. We'd all be sleeping & all of a sudden 1 would start & then the rest would join in. We used to say "the choir" was singing to wake us up! After about 2 minutes they quit. I'd go down about 5 minutes later to let them all out & all was normal....nobody was making a beeline out to do anything. So we have never figured out what triggered those espisodes. Only happened when they were ALL together. |
I've never heard Zeke howl but Brick has before. Most times it's in the middle of the night. He's woken us up with a blood curdling howl. I think he has bad nightmares once in a while and sleep howls. We turn on the light & kind of shake him and he has a look on his face that says, "what?". I can get him to howl if I take the cordless phone, hit the intercom button, leave the room, and howl into the handset. That gets him howling. |
doggie dreams.........Oh to know what they are dreaming....the other night MO started yelping in pain/fear...fast asleep. |
Only when spooked - and then obviously has to investigate - only at night when we are trying to sleep though! |

Murphy's Sheeps wrote: Does anyone else have a sheepie who howls? Patch could go on American Idol, her howling is great. I live on a main road so we get the emergency vehicles and she just sings along with the sirens. Just as I read this thread, an EMS truck went by and Patch was howling away. I love it. |
I personally think the sirens sound like they are howling. That's probably dumb but I think it has a similar rhythm. Maybe they are just howling back |
