I am noticing now that he goes"deaf" when outside and I am calling him in. If I am right in front of him and call him, he will come. If I am close enough, about 20 feet. and call him, he will come. But if he is down the driveway, and his back is to me, he acts like he doesn't even hear me...I was getting annoyed with him but I am starting to think, could he have a hearing loss? What hearing test can I ask my Vet to perform and do you think its necessary? |

Testing like that would likely be beyond the scope of most vets, would be my guess. Unless you have a really large practice with specialties. I would go to either an audiologist/vet, or check with your state's teaching vet school. Your vet should be able to refer you to whoever is best in your area. Good luck. |
Diane, you'd have to ask around to find out who does BAER testing. Your regular vet may know. Otherwise, and I don't know how inclusive this list is, but: http://www.lsu.edu/deafness/baersite.htm Kristine |
It's tough knowing since they react to different stimuli so quickly. I'm never sure Glacier is deaf or just stubborn.......more stubborn than usual. About the time I think she may have heard me I reconsider as smell or movement might have also be the trigger. Try whistles, beating a pan, etc behind her when she's engrossed in something else. Even the dreaded coins in a coffee can shake would be a good test. If she is deaf, she will amaze you how well she still functions. You are the one who has to change.....which is harder Call around to find out where deaf dog classes are being taught. You'll need how to communicate. |
