It's such a feeling of rejection at the deepest levels to want to pet a dog and offer a little love only to be snarled at and bitten. Maybe it was just my preparation for being married? |

Joan is a poodle? All these years I never knew.... |
Not what I meant, but now that you mention it... Cute little pom poms, cute little eyes, a nose you just wanna kiss, boundless energy... |
Wish I could explain it Ron, but Poodles hate me too. Especially the French ones. My nemesis as a child was named Fifi, perfect for a snippy, mean little thing that was all fangs and claws...... Laurie and Oscar |
WOW!! RON!! ...They hate me too!! Well, like you,one in particular... BUFFY, was her name..my gradeschool graduation present from my mom. My first pup!!! I had wanted a dog all my childhood and finally, I got...BUFFY.. Can you guess???? She hated me...LOVED mom..She lived to be 16 years old.. Buffy never stayed alone. She would go to my grandmothers house when mom went to work. After I got married, and was a stay at home mom, my mom asked me to watch Buffy for ONE day. We had a nine room house at the time...A huge 'white elephant'..Mom carried Buffy in, and placed her on the floor after giving her kisses and telling her to be good~~~ I walked mom out, letting her know that we would have fun and not to worry.. I went in the house~~where is Buffy????~~~~ Called her, looked in all the first floor rooms...then proceeded upstairs to the bedrooms.. I FOUND HER..... in the hallway with a wicked grin on her face...I looked in my bedroom and right, smack in the middle of MY queen size bed...Buffy left me a present!!!! ((and for a 4 pound dog..it was a HUGE present!!)).. So Ron..Although Buffy had no teeth and couldn't bite me...she was able to send a clear message of what she thought of me! |
I've never been around a poodle. When Edgar was going through training classes there was some big poodles in a different class. The poodles seemed twitchy and the owners seemed even more twitchy along with a touch of scary. |
Maybe our vibes have always been for a different breed as poodles and I have never gotten along. (I'm wondering what other type of poodle is there than French?) First was Beau, a black owned by a fellow Brownie scout...we held our meetings in the home basement and Beau would lunge at me as I came up the steps. Second was Zeno, by brother's dog who they gave to me after they couldn't train it around their new child. Zeno spent 24 hours with me and went to the pound. All the minis and teacups I've come across have also been snarly. |
OK, I confess: poodles love me. And I love them. In fact, it's the breed I grew up with. Maybe that's the key? A lot of people "diss" this most intelligent and intuitive and humorous breed, and maybe they sense that and are sensitive about it? A wellbred poodle is a dog beyond dogs, sorry, even beyond OES. In fact, I'm not even sure they ARE dogs. Their intelligence level far exceeds most humans I know. They make the famed border collie seem like a slouch in the brains department and, unlike our breed, actually live to please you. My first poodle, a show ring drop-out mini my parents gave me when I was five, basically trained herself. What she did NOT do is prepare me for my first OES. Or any real dog for that matter She was basically the poster dog for Dogs for Dummies. That said, keep in mind they were very, very popular for many years, the smaller varieties in particular. So there was and is a lot of crappy breeding with iffy temperaments. The toys especially have suffered some really awful temperaments. My friend's rescue mini poodle is reasonably OK in the temperament department, apart from chomping on the occasional child, certainly he and I get along just fine, perhaps because he knows I respect his poodleness, but has built her vet her own new clinic with his constant array of serious health problems. I.e. all poodles are not created equal. Too, with the toys, especially, people tend to treat them like little fragile lap dogs and cater to their every little whim, which creates little tyrants. I wouldn't take their opinions to heart. Just tell them they're an embarrassment to the breed and let it go Kristine |
Your description of your little poodle brings back so many memories for me, Kristine! My experience with this breed was amazingly similar to yours. When I was 2 years old, and my sister was 9, my parents got her a toy poodle. Vikki didn't wind up wanting the little guy, but he became the love of my young life . Pepe was incredibly smart, and, for a 10LB dog, unbelievably tough. He followed me through every sort of adventure including things I shudder to think about now ! My sister eventually found her perfect dog-match in a beautiful (and brilliant) German Shepard named Vashti, and my little poodle did every single thing that GSD did...up to and including running with us when we rode our horses. He was my best (only) comforter during some very, very dark times and was only unable to follow me into foster care in my early teens. At that point he moved in with my sister, and became the beloved mascot of her boyfriend's rock band ! I often think, as I'm hugging Eggbert, that it was the similar feel of soft sheepie fur to my little poodle's coat that first attracted me to my current breed. |
My Mom's poodle likes me. Except when I'm grooming her. She's very smart and likes everyone but she's really loyal to my Mom. |
Are French Poodles and Miniature Poodles from the same bloodlines? I've only known one Standard Poodle, and he did not have a good temperament, though I understand that he was probably the exception, not the rule. Fifi and Pierre (yes, their real names) were part of the aforementioned poorly-bred generation in the early 70's. I shudder even now as I think about those snarly little beasts. Laurie and Oscar |
FiFi is such a poodle name |
I thought of you, Ron, as I took China to the Vet yesterday. The most beautiful Standard White Poodle came out just before we went in. I love Standard Poodles. My mil used to have Toy Poodles and I always enjoyed them. Her last one Chin was my fav. he was an apricot and lived to a ripe old age. Chin and their old Parakeet Peter both died on the same day...and my fil died the next day. |
Sigh.... |
While admire a good poodle, they aren't the breed for me. I don't care for breed with pointy muzzles...so poodles are definitely out. I agree with the bad breeding. For so many years they were the only real option (at least around here) for a small, toy breed dog. BYB went nuts! I had more nasty small poodles in my classes - dangerous little dogs. Standards seem to have escaped that fate.... |
