So how do I catch this poor thing? The neighbor near us said that they would like it as their dog is getting old and not doing well. It looks to be maybe a pit bull or boxer cross??? |

Do you or your neighbor have a fenced yard? Keep your dogs inside and open the gate... sometimes the dog will come right in (a big black dog last fall did this). You might put some smelly food inside the fenced area and wait to see if he'll enter the secure area, then close the gate while he's eating. I tried to see if I could catch a pathetic poodle this winter... he started to come up to the car. When I slowly opened the door, he bolted. He then tried repeatedly to jump over the fence around the airport... the fence was too high. He was terrified. I had to leave him... Contact Animal Control or your local shelter and ask if they have a dog trap you can rent or borrow. Use canned dog food or maybe even some cat food to lure him in. The traps here have a weatherproof canvas over them... we would cover it with a tarp or hide the back of the cage in the bushes so it was less threatening. With a dog this frightened, just opening a car door to see if he wants to go for a ride is probably not an option. If you try to guide him into the area, just be very careful he doesn't instead head into traffic. It's sometimes about getting close enough to direct an animal's course but not too close that it takes off running. At least dogs don't fly! (I've had to catch waterfowl before.) I hope you can help him... thanks for trying! |
This can be a loooong process. I f someone has a live trap that is a start. You can also try sitting down with some chicken or liverwurst. This takes patience and sometimes you can sit for hours. Let the dog approach you. Sitting makes you less threatening. Have a slip leash handy. You may have to let the dog approach you and sniff and just be still. I have had to do this before and another vol sat froxen in one place for 4 hours before the dog came up and he could snag him!! Thanks for trying to save this dog. |
I haven't seen the dog at all today. Last night Lee and I, plus the neighbors that wanted it, almost caught it (okay we came no where close) in a fenced off cul-de-sac but it escaped along the river somehow. I put dry dog biscuits along with wet stinky cat food on top in a small fenced area we have and left the gate open. The food wasn't touched. I feel so bad for the poor thing. Hopefully it hasn't gotten hit. |
Oh Hope he comes back. Live traps as described work best. And don't assume he was abused. Most dogs who do a runner or perhaps get dumped are frightened and disoriented. A few years ago a locally wellknown agility competitor was killed on her way home from a trial when her RV crashed. When the emergency responders got her out two of her dogs escaped. One was fairly easily caught, the other, a sweet older rottie took off and it must have taken about a week to catch her, even when one of the woman's close friends who had run the dog and knew her well drove down to the area and helped look for her. He had several sightings but she was too afraid to come to him even. They eventually caught her in a baited live trap, otherwise they weren't going to be able to get near her. A lot of dogs respond this way following a car accident unfortunately, though you should have seen some indication that someone was looking for the dog if that's what occurred. Most seem not to travel too terribly far before they are sighted. Fingers crossed. Kristine |
We have an Australian Cattle Dog that has been on the run for 3 months! She was a stray that was seen in an area for over a year before they were able to catch her, and that was only because she had a litter of puppies so they knew where to find her. We had her in a foster home and she opened the door to her crate, so when the dog walker came over she was loose and bolted out. She was seen about 3 weeks ago 20 miles north of where she was loose. She gained at least 5 lbs and has been seen sunbathing in the fields. There's a woman working on gaining her trust, but for the most part you can't get near her. She's way too smart for traps and the area is not secure enough for tranquilizers. We're scared to lose her again but we don't know what to do! |
The neighbors that were trying to catch this dog along with us caught it tonight. The husband made a really big trap and they rubbed hot dogs around everywhere inside it. They had a rope through the window of the house and when the dog went into the trap they pulled the rope and closed the door. They said that he was biting the kennel wire viscously before he calmed down. They are going to take it slow and see how he is. They have 4 small children so hopefully it will all work out. The kids named it Petey (even though the parents told them they didn't know if they would be able to keep the dog depending on temperament). I'm glad that it wasn't hit but hopefully it will be nice enough that it wont need put down. |
No matter what, it's better than being hit by a car and left injured along side the road. Hoping he'll settle in. It really concerns me about the children though... |
