the oster trimmer

so my hubby and i went out and purchased the oster groomer for our beast... he doesnt like it, but thats ok, im sure it will grow on him.... :o) the question is more of a technical question or questins. first off, it came with a wide 10, which is the length that everyone said is great, but i think it gives him too short a haircut. is there a different one that will leave the hair a bit longer? and second, but most important. how do you get all the hair off of it?! i didnt want to rinse it, because i thought then some of the grease would get lost? so how do i clean it!?

thanks!

We use a #10 blade on very matted dogs because it goes right under mats easily. It's much easier to go through a dog's coat if you're using a regular width blade vs the wide width that's included with the clipper. To leave a bit longer coat, go to a #7 or #5 blade, to go even longer go to a #4 or #3-3/4. I personally really like the #5 because if my dogs need a shave-down it's because there are mats to deal with and a #5 will still go through them. You can also buy clipper combs that will raise up a very short blade (usually a #15 or #30) up to a longer length. Clipper combs won't go through mats and the double coat of an OES is hard to get through even without mats so I never use them.

To clean a blade, take a brush and scrub off the hair and dirt that remains on the blade. Don't rinse a blade off in water because they rust very easily, always use a proper blade cleaner. You can get Andis and Oster brand blade cleaner at Sally Beauty or from most pet supply stores or order on-line. Put the cleaner in a small container that allows you to submerge the clipper head into cleaner solution just enough to wet the blade. Run the clippers with the blade on for several seconds and then drain off. Take the blades off the clippers and oil thoroughly before putting them away. A blade box is great for storage so blades won't get damaged like they do if left on the clippers.

Here's a site with some great clipper maintenance videos. http://www.northerntails.com/instructionalvideos.html The one on blade cleaning is about 1/3 of the way down the page.
I have an Andis clipper and use the sz. 10 on Bailee's matted area. I use a 3-3/4 for a better overall look. It leaves his coat longer and he looks more "fluffy" when I use the 3-3/4. I purchased a ceramic blade, but to be honest it stinks. Not worth the extra money. A regular non-ceramic blade will do just as well and cost a few bucks less.
ditto, ditto, ditto!

I used the blade wash as I'm clipping to cool the blade (they can get hot!!) and also to clean it thus keeping it sharper longer. I reuse the wash just a few time before tossing it. I keep it in a separate container.

Remove the blade, clean, lube and store separately and don't forget to clean the machine. If you are nibble fingered, you can take apart the blade to clean it....the sliding part slides right off. Brush out between the tines, clean and reassemble (yes you get to say nasty things as you try to get the slider back on...I always do) don't forget to lube so it slides easily. I try never to completely take the sliding part off....I'll push it from one side to another but try to keep it on.

10 is short. Like above I just did the sheepers with a 3 3/4, 4 and 5 saving the 10 for areas that mat easily and the longer blades won't touch. Took me forever to learn How to use the combs......you need at least a 20 blade on before putting on the comb (I couldn't get the 15 to cut right for me) and still with the OES double coat......well, I use the combs on DH's hair only. Dogs either get a scissor clip to keep it longer or get their "summer camp" cut with the 3 3/4 blade.

I agree, ceramic wasn't worth the extra cost.
