Licking her hair and stomach

HI there,

Biscuit keep licking her hair and stomach. Sometimes her nipples too, is this normal behaviour or not.

She is now 4 1/2 month old and has been to the dog hotel twice when I am away.. Should I use some medicated shampoo for her to see if it helps?

Thanks
REgards,
Johnson

There's no redness, discolored areas, bumps or flea dirt? Have you bathed her since her stay at the hotel? Wondering if it might have been something they used at the dog hotel that's a bit irritating. If it's just on her stomach, maybe something she laid on... dogs can sometimes be sensitive to cleaning products or carpet powders. I'd start with the gentlest product since she's just a pup... her regular puppy shampoo. Soap her up good, rinse thoroughly and dry her off. See if the licking stops. A baking soda and water rinse can sometimes help to sooth a skin irritation. Not sure of the ratio for a puppy... maybe 2 teaspoons baking soda dissolved in a gallon of water? (Others here might know.)

If this doesn't help then I'd look for puppy-safe shampoo made for itchy skin... oatmeal shampoos are said to be soothing. If you need something stronger, you might ask the vet if EQyss Micro-Tek Medicated Shampoo would be safe to try... it says it's safe on puppies. http://www.petedge.com/product/EQyss-Mi ... /44832.uts If it continues, it's probably time to have the vet take a look at her.

If it's not a physical problem, you might try to redirect the behavior (some dogs find licking soothing). You can give the pup a chew toy when the licking starts.

Hoping just a quick bath will do the trick.
Best wishes... Biscuit is adorable!
Thanks for the advise and I will start to have a gentle bath and see how she response..

Maybe it is also a good idea to have her bath again after the over night stays.. I always think the bath the did before I pick her up might be good enough.. maybe she is so hairy that need more rinse after bath.

Thanks again,
Johnson
Hopefully that will work for you pup. Mention the problem to the person who bathes her... they might be able to select a different shampoo than what was used last time or maybe they can rinse her off a little longer.

Skin problems can be very frustrating and difficult to pinpoint. I've been remopping floors since 4:30am... thinking the water-only floor steam cleaner might have had some kind of preservative or disinfectant in the water well or on the mop pads because my boy's skin flared again since using it yesterday afternoon. :| We've been dealing with a problem here since October...
Floor product is something I am thinking of also. I need to check with my cleaner and see if she has put lots of
products when mopping..

Cheers
