I have bought my grooming table and Kenley is that used to it now he just falls asleep on it. Marley is classed as work in progress So what do people recommend for grooming Marls and the pup ? Also advice on shampoos etc would be grateful . Plus advice on how to keep the beards white would be good as i hate seeing Marls with a grubby beard Puppy cuts is so much easier |

I use the 27mm Chris Christensen pin brush here I like the extra long 'pins' and the ends are rounded and very smooth so don't scratch. I'm using White on White shampoo on his whites, and ordinary human shampoo (Herbal Essences here in the UK) on the rest of him because White on White is expensive and the human shampoo smells yummier. You will find it better to dilute it if you are using human shampoo and use a spray bottle to get it right into the coat otherwise it's really hard to rinse out! For conditioner I'm currently using Ice on Ice which is just fantastic although I'll have to stop if we decide to show as no conditioners are allowed. Erm... what else.. oh, I use a slicker to get the tiny loose hairs out before they become knots. I use this one (medium size) which I find very useful. A basic medium toothed metal comb is always a good idea too. All these products are widely available. I would stress though, that it depends on the coat, and the groomers' preferences. My breeder uses the bristle brushes but I have no idea how they possibly get those to go through such thick coats I've not yet mastered the white beard My boy is a constant drooler and no amount of Dawn (or Fairy here in the UK) or whitening products has made any difference yet. Hope that helps! The items I've listed here are kinda 'high end' products, you could probably get similar ones cheaper. It's up to you what you prefer though. Mine have lasted very well. EDIT- I just realised you are in the UK...sorry I didn't even see who posted before I replied 'petcetera etc' is a wonderful stockist, I have used them lots of times. |
I very rarely bath Archie, his legs get the occasional hosing if the river or ford don't wash the cow poo off! He only really gets a bath if he has had loose stools and has made a mess of his rear. I am still working post his bath the kennels gave him, I find his coat more manageble when it hasn't been washed and stripped of his natural oils. And contrary to popular belief him not being bathed does not make him a stinky dog, any dirt and damp dries and brushes out, a bit like a mud bath or mud pack on human skin. Obviously it's a personal preference thing, but in Archies case as he actually hates having a bath (but loves other muckier forms of water) I chose to work with him than against him. The stinkiest part of him is his breath after he has snaffled the cats food (especially the fish based ones!) but that is dealt with by brushing his teeth, okay more like him sucking the toothpaste off the brush while he chews it! If you wash his beard every day or so with very dilute fairy or dog shampoo make up in a squirty bottle - it will help keep it clean, then just give it a rub dry with a towel after, it won't be white and unless you are showing and even then only at the time of showing I would avoid the use of whitening products normally (no matter how safe they are assumed to be they are still a dressing or product of some type that isn't natural) just make sure the big lumps of kibble aren't hanging from the beard |
Good point about bathing! Forgot to mention I bath Ru every 4 weeks in the summer, again it's your own preference. I cycle with him running next to the bike in a very dusty place and it gets to the point where my hands are just coated in grey mud/ gravely sandy dust when I groom or stroke him But if I didn't need to, I would just hose his legs a few times a week (which he gets anyway) then bath every 8 weeks. I find his coat much easier to groom after a bath- I guess that depends on the dog too |
Thankyou Will check out petcetera for brushes and a good shampoo. I have a slicker already (not a good one but it works) .I will try the fairy on marleys beard My friend that shows swears by corn flour in the beard to get it white .Haven't tried it yet as i will most probably end up with an OES with his mouth stuck together |
when you use whitening shampoo put it on need on the most needed areas and leave on for 5-10 minutes rinse and if needed do it again. i use white on white for the neat bits and then i use kelco plum white shampoo and conditioner for everywhere else and its a colour enhancer as well as a whitener aand its very good ot also dilutes very well you can get it from http://www.technogroom.co.uk billy gets a bath about once a month, or like today as soon as we got back for a weekend away when he rolled in everything he could find! have you thought of going for a herbal approach to ease the symptoms, i am not herbalist but for instance cranberry helps the immune system and its available in tablet form. it wont mess with any medication that his on either. there are lots more too if you ask for have a look on the net. |

Marls has a grade 3 murmur and an enlarged heart. I have Marls on a raw diet with added herbs and veg that all do his heart and immune system good. That good infact he is now off all medication I definately think herbs are good |
I don't like to use whitener more than every 4 weeks, no matter how mild. I use Chris Christensen's Day to Day shampoo and conditioner in between. Cowboy Magic has a whitener I like a bit better than the CC one, but I have both on hand and use whatever is nearest the tub at bath time. For brushes, Tonks is ridiculously sensitive. I like CC's wooden pin brush for her as a warm up. It won't dematt, but Tonks squirms less and it gets her sort of ready for the next stage, which is a regular pin brush or slicker. I also recommend a mat breaker of some kind. My girls matt up horribly, and we can't live without those. |
Iv'e ordered a Chris Christensen wooden and Chris Christensen metal pin brush and some white on white shampoo . I already have a slicker and mat breaker which is a good job as i think my credit card is a bit rigid at the moment When it recovers i will look into a decent comb and some trimming scissors .Any sugestions ? |
Firstly I wouldn't use human shampoo on any dog proffessionally because their ph levels are different to ours. Dezyna Dog do a very good intensive shampoo that works wonders on the oes coat, if your not showing i would use the intensive spray before drying the coat it will stop the coat from matting up and keep the dirt out it really does work. A clean coat is always much easier to work with, for the beard I use Blueberry Facial it keep sthe beard cleaner for longer. I would never use washing up liquid on any dogs, you just need to look at what it does to your hands. I use Les Pooches brushes on the oes and they work great, if you want functional scissors at a reasonable price Roseline a good. |
Is that the South Bark's Blueberry Facial ? |
