Quote: Fetus position - A whopping 41% of participants sleep in this curled-up manner. Women are twice as likely to rest like this and it is listed as the most common position. These sleepers are said to have a tough exterior but are still sensitive and may appear to be shy but warm up quickly. Log position - If you sleep on your side with both arms down, you are a social, easy-going person who is trusting, sometimes to the point of being gullible. The study showed 15% of people sleep like a log. Yearner position - A close third is the side-lying position with both arms out in front of the body, with 13% of partipants sleeping like this. Yearners are noted to be open-minded and still cynical, suspicious, and stubborn about sticking to decisions once they are made. Soldier position - These sleepers lie on their backs with arms down and kept close to the body. This 8% study is said to be reserved, quiet, without fuss, and hold themselves and others to a high standard. Soldier sleepers have a higher likelihood for snoring due to the flat-back position, which may not cause them to wake up often but may result in a less restful night's sleep. Freefall position - Those people who lie on their bellies with arms under or wrapped around a pillow with head turned to the side, make up 7% of the population studied. Freefallers are brash, outgoing, and are very uncomfortable with criticism. Starfish position - Sleepers who lie on their backs with arms up near their head or the pillow account for 5% of participants. These people are good listeners, helpful, and are uncomfortable being the center of attention. People who sleep in starfish position are more likely to snore and to suffer from a poor night's sleep more often. If you think you are one of those people who move through all of these positions, that's not likely to really be the case. Idzikowski said the research reveals most people stay in the same position all night and only 5% lay differently night by night. Also interesting is that the study showed only one in ten people cover their bodies entirely with a blanket, with most people exposing an arm, leg, or both feet. Please notice they don't have "scrunched around the dog" or "hanging onto the sides because the dog has the rest of the bed." |

fetus position but legs extended onto another pillow at the end of the bed. I love random threads. |
LOL. I guess I am a free faller - but I don't think it suits my personality. Great. Now I have to find another positon that better suits me, as a person. Love this thread! |
I never realized, until I started having migraines, how important my 'natural' sleep position was. If I have a headache, I'm forced to sleep on my back with my head elevated, as any other position increases the pain. My normal sleep position is definitely on my side (with both hands tucked under the pillow...an option not listed above! ), and even though it hurt, the urge to roll into that position was overwhelming. Also, my sleep-position description should include: bent knees, to accommodate Abby's preferred sleep spot at the foot of the bed, and one arm around Bert, whose head is usually on my pillow. |
Freefall position. I just GOTTA be on my tummy hugging a pillow when I go to sleep. |
No "Bed Hog" mentioned, spreading out, hogging 3/4 of the bed and nearly kicking partner out of bed. "Doona Hog" too tend to grab the side of the doona and roll over leaving the other half with no bed covers. Not nice in winter Brrrrr but I am snug like in a cacoon. |
Oh, I read this article!! It's cute! I think I start out more a yearner but I don't hold my arms straight out...that seems --awkward. I have my elbows bent. and somehow I end up with the legs bent or stuck out the sides of the bed to conform to which dog (sometimes cat) decides to climb up on the bed. |
This thread has the potential to become very dangerous! |

I am quite similar. Same migraine back sleeping pose. I also had to do that when I had my horse accident and dislocated my shoulder. I also sleep on my side with both hands tucked under the pillow. Actually, I seem to prefer both hands directly under my cheek, but having lotion on my hands at bedtime makes for lots of breakouts! No dogs in the bed here, just a large white cat! |

I'm a yearner now, although my arms are generally wrapped around a pillow. When I was young I was a free faller. I was notorious as a very restless sleeper as a child. My parents took a photo of me completely backwards on my bed with all of the bed clothing on the floor. Another picture has me sleeping with my butt wagging in the air. At least I was fully pajama'd |
I'm a yearner, but also have my arms bent, the one underneath goes under the pillow. They got the stubborn bit right |
I'm sure that during the night, I get into all those positions. I'd love to be videoed thoughout the night. I move around a lot. Lately I've been waking up in the middle of the night with the dreaded hot flashes and put my head at the foot of the bed and my feet at the head of the bed. That way my body is underneath the ceiling fan. One morning I woke up on my stomach, diagonally across the bed, with my knees bent and my lower legs in the air! |
Hmm...they didn't take into account wo you are sleeping with If I am sleeping alone, I sleep on my back, ocassionally on my side...If hubby is home, thenI sleep sideways next to him...If the dogs are jumping in, I am at the edge holding on for dear life...and if my back hurts from the day, I am in the fetus position because it stretches out the back muscles... All in all....any women over 50 is just happy to get over the night sweats and get some sleep. we don't care what position we are in! |

Very interesting analysis. This is how I sleep until DH comes to bed. I agree with the gullible part for sure, but maybe because it's forced... |
VerveUp wrote: Someone should interpret sheepie sleep-positions! What do you suppose that head-hanging-over-the-edge thing means??? |
Jack is a head hanger. I haven't a clue what it means He's also a flat on his back sleeper.....why always cross wise in the hall so we have to step over him |
